General Severe Weather Discussion
NorthernUpstateSC replied to nwohweather's topic in Southeastern States
I know our power went out and came to find out the tornado that was warned 20 mins later is what caused the power to go out to begin with. We had no idea that was that close and happening. While I was on the phone with Blue ridge to report the outage our phones went off. It was pitch black had my daughter and young grandson here with me and this was very surreal. Never want to go through that again! -

Dud?? Here in Pickens county sc had 2 tornadoes less then 2 miles from our house. Pretty dam scary when the power goes out and it's pitch black then your phone screams tornado warning. I'll make sure to send the next dud system your way and see how you like it. -

Lookout, HRRR nailed it here in upstate sc. We had 8 inches of snow early then freezing rain & sleet since about 8am now heavy sleet really gusty winds and more snow this afternoon. Even Weather Channel nailed it here they had 5-8 inches of snow by morning while NWS dropped totals to 1-3 last evening for entire event. They originally had 8+ here not sure why they changed when most of models were coming in colder last night. How much more snow are you thinking this afternoon when ULL comes through? -
Yeah I was surprised with Chris Justus but, understand after 2014 when he was forecasting 12-14 inches of snow. And we only got 2 inches of slop and he received death threats afterwards.

Burrell you are the man! 8 inches of snow and now heavy sleet in northern Six Mile. NWS blew it again this way!!!

Hey Eyewall, Sorry for what your going through. I will keep you and your friends going through these tough times in my thoughts and prayers!!

Totally agree! I would add Fox 21 along with brad panovich in NC. I like Chris and also Cedric think they did a great job with this system.

You should apply for the weekend weather person at WYFF since Dale Gilbert retired. Been on here for a while and whenever the Upstate has a chance at winter weather, look forward to your input! Excellent point many mets had to see the potential but chose not even to mention.

Great Job yesterday Burrel!!! Not sure if you watched it last night it was so funny watching KK on Fox making up excuse after excuse for their busted forecast. Kept going on and on about the warm nose this and the warm nose that.... Actually going outside in between live shots to come back and say just like I told you the mix has already started said she saw rain mixing in outside. Then the other met I think he name is Bob said well I see nothing but snowflakes coming down. It was hilarious.. LOL...Great Job as usual Burrel!!!

House shook for about 10 seconds back and forth for a little after 8 this morning. i live in Upstate SC. Never experienced one that strong before!

The NAM never swayed and nailed it here in Upstate SC and N GA on 2-8 and the week before that when we had a surprise snow for 3 or 4 hours here and 3 to 4 inches in the Cashiers NC area. Other models eventually caught on but, it was the NAM leading the way. Agree in there is no way I would dismiss the NAM at this point.

There has been a lot of chatter from NWS offices around the country in the last year or so trying to make the argument that the new 5G network currently going up all over will only interfere with the weather satellite transmission and could potentially lead to missed data and less accurate forecasts. Of course the government did their best to shoot that theory down...No one knows if this has potential or not. But, what if this could possibly be the reason why this happened today, who knows? This was just a surprise snow missed by just a several hours by the NWS what if this was a potential severe weather event with a real tornado threat that the models missed this bad...Then you will be talking about some serious ramifications...

Ok, Ice age if I am forced to take one for the the SE team on a yearly basis for the mother of all storms....since there is a several month recovery time period for each surgery I will have to nominate you to head the donation collection board so I don't end up living in a tent.... -

Again, we have to have all the stars aligned absolutely perfectly just so we can see a snowflake or sleet pellet but, the golf tournament in pebble beach southern cali had play suspended today for 45 minutes so they could clean the accumulation of grapple from the greens and fairways?? Seattle Washington pretty much at sea level between 2 mountain ranges in a worse snow hole area supposed then we are here on just the lee side of the apps can get get 6 or more inches of snow and has stayed on the ground the last 4 or 5 days?? And, parts of the sierra nevada mountains in cali had over 120 inches of snow in just 3 days earlier this last week and even more after that?? Enough said... Beginning to think we have shifted south in the hemisphere and we are now were florida used to be.... -

Pretty sad....Seattle and other coastal communities in the NW are forecast to get 4 to 8 inches + of snow this weekend...The mountains in california got over 120 inches of snow in a matter of 3 days this week...that is over 10 feet plus of snow in 72 hours and we cannot even get the whiff of a renegade snow flake or sleet pellet??? This is worse then pretty sad it is pretty freakin pathetic!!!!!!!!!!! -

I understand where most on here are coming from in regards to wanting to see snow. Granted we are in the south but, snow can still happen in many areas and it used to happen with more frequency then it does now. This is I am sure is where most of the frustration (cliff divers...LOL..) comes from on the board... I am a native new yorker that moved to SC in 1977 when I was real young, mom and dad wanted to get away from the snow and cold. Well our first winter here in Upstate SC we had several decent snows and mom and dad where like geez.... we came here to get away from this... And every year for about 20 or so years you could pretty much count on several snows in this area of the foothills (North of I-85) up until the mid and late 90"s that is when things started changing. Now granted during this time frame there was a year or two we had less but, for the most part we had several events each year. Most were small snow events but, there were several times back then we got 6+ inch storms. Many on here I am sure remember 1988 we had 16 inches of snow with over 3.5 foot snow drifts with temps in the low to mid teens while snowing...snow stayed on the ground for 30 days that entire month of January until the first week of February... And, who can forget the blizzard of 93 and, there have been others.... We used to have low pressure systems come out of the gulf of mexico on a fairly regular basis back then and many on here have said the same thing. True Miller A systems are happening with much less frequency now and like many have said it is like trying to find and catch a unicorn with one of these rare storms. It was much colder back then as well as it hit -5 here in both 1983 & 1985. Also, within the last 20 years the average high in January for this area has went from 49 degrees to now which is 52 degrees during the coldest part of the winter. This is a 3 degree difference in not a very long period of time which is a pretty large jump so, something is happening. Not sure what but, something has changed....I have heard many in the media saying it's global warming and then I hear others saying no such thing as global warming it is just a weather cycle which is a period of 20 or 30 years we are going through. Either way I think many on the board remember these times from 20-30 years ago and wish things were like that again.
