  1. I took a ride down to that area mid day today exploring side roads and then coming back north on Rt 93. Just to the west of Rt 93 looks like microburst damage off one road. I counted about 20 large trees down. Coming back north on Rt 93 I stopped at the Canterbury Rest Stop which is in that mile marker 50-51. Spoke to the attendant on duty. He showed me pictures on his phone. Silver dollar and ice cube size hail. The ground was white. Cars were dented. His car was totaled he said from hail damage. Showed me pictures of his hood with tons of dents. His car's windows were not broken but some people getting off Rt 93 were. Amazingly I still found hail on the ground, 20 hours after the storm. Here is a picture of that, still quarter size after all those hours.
  2. Another interesting video. If I saw this as a weather spotter I would have to think twice as to what I'm seeing. Some low flying scud with weak rotation or a funnel cloud or possibly an F0 tornado what do you guys think?
  3. A friend (ha, a very ditzy one just called). Just drove from Concord NH past Exit 20 on Rt 93. She said the storm had already moved through but that there was a lot of "ice and snow" on the ground and many branches down. Trying to pinpoint exactly where she saw it and details were impossible but I was able to get out of her that it was closer to Exit 20 than Concord. Needless to say, there must have been a lot of hail on the ground since she said the ground looked like snow..
  4. Watching a nice line of storms that is getting going. Trajectory looks to take it about 5-10 miles south of me. Brian and Eek may do very well. Very frustrating when you really need rain and watch the town next to you get a drenching.
  5. Glad your getting some rain. Every night its all to my north. Friday fropa looks too early for any severe here in C NH but still 4 days away
  6. Now that I can loop the NNY convection it seems to be moving more ESE. I'll focus more on what is upstream.
  7. Convection starting to fire in extreme Upstate NY. On its current heading it would be coming through the White Mtns. Are the upper level winds such that as the complex moves east it tends to round the bend and move more south or would it stay on its due SE course?
  8. I just saw that. Wonder if we can get an MCS to dive more southward than southeastward and get us in the Lakes Region? I doubt it but will have to watch upstream this PM
  9. Lava, I jury-rigged a system. On my outside faucets, I attached multi-valve faucets output. Then ran garden hoses around the house to the sprinkler on pole system. I bought these at tractor supply, a bit like the bigger ones you see on golf courses. You can adjust the swing and length of stream. So we just turn on the faucet and open up the appropriate valve. I can get the stream pretty to shot pretty far away. Then for areas, I can't reach I have a walking sprinkler. It's made by Nelson. They are very cool, use water pressure to propel and track along the garden hose I lay out.
  10. My lawns look really good considering the dryness over the last 2 months. We have been rotating sprinklers giving the lawn about 3 hours of water a day and really pushing our 700 foot deep well to the limit. Water about 90 minutes then let it recharge. Use organic fert. 15-1-10 with a broadcast spreader set to 6 and have done that twice so far this season. Hopefully we can score a nice T storm or 2 over this upcoming heatwave either by a MCS coming down on a NW flow or pop up storm later in the week. Here are some pics and the sunset over Newfound Lake last evening via drone.
  11. Edit, I bet 9 to 1 that the owners don't know its a chestnut. Most people just think its an ugly tree and if its in the way would prune it down. Amazing that you found this right in your hood!
  12. Very cool! If it was to drop seeds you would see the pods growing on some of the branches. They flower white in May and now my hybrid has the pods growing that will be seeds. In the meantime prune a few branches and try to get them to root. Now I'll be asking you for one!
  13. Brian, looks like it could be an American Chestnut. Maybe the parent tree was killed with the blight and this is an off shoot? Here's a picture from the web, my leaves look like this too
  14. Wow, what a difference between now and then. If your soil was dry before the .25" I doubt that amount of rain would get down to the roots. A good 1" rain would really help. I'm not a lawn guy but keep us posted.
  15. I am not mowing our fields at all until we get back to a normal pattern of rain every few days. We mowed the lawn yesterday for the first time in 10 days but set the tractor at 4" instead of 3.5". Longer grass is best during a dry spell.. Lava, maybe your fert. is just sitting on the surface and waiting for a good soak to drain down to the roots. You'll get there. I never thought I would have a lawn again after our big house move 5 years ago!
  16. One more lawn post. Here's a picture of the lawn. Lots of watering and organic fert but still losing the battle to the drought. 2" of rain since 4/25/18 will do that. CD's seem to be working with the woodpecker (only been up for an hour). Also off topic but there is my Prius Prime plug in. Love that car. About 25-30 miles pure electric and then the hybrid motor kicks in. Even after the electric is drained the hybrid motor has been giving me about 70mpg. Only problem is the car is not 4 wheel drive and low to the ground so you definitely need a 2nd "winter" vehicle.
  17. Looks like you desperately need rain. SE slope getting maximum sun, drying out soil. My lawn is green because we water up to 4 hours a day, as much as the well can handle. Guess you have too much lawn for that? Hopefully, fingers crossed you will get some light rain over the next 36 hours and then some good T storms with fropa next week. Too much rain however looks like it could cause erosion. Are you applying fert? We use Agway's 15-1-10 "high organic". Applied every 4-6 weeks.
  18. Speaking of Chestnuts all of a sudden over the past 3 or 4 days two Downy Woodpeckers have found my Chinese/American Chestnut tree in my front lawn. They have done a number on it. Very brave birds. I can almost walk up to the tree and they don't fly away. I have that black tar tree healing stuff and filled in some of the holes. Then I applied tree wrap. They still kept coming. We have 3 cats and we have this spray that keeps animals away from furniture. Has a bitter spray. So I sprayed the tree. Woodpeckers could have cared less. Then the idea of a fake owl and set that up but they learned within an hour it was not a threat. Just hung old CD's thinking maybe the wind will scare them. Neighbors will think I'm nuts!
  19. Tamarack, you had said that American Chestnuts are really great at regrowing.. Like I said in a previous post I had another small 10" saplings and stupid me ran it over with the lawn tractor this spring. Right to 1" of it coming out of the ground. I walked into the pasture and checked and its sprouting a couple of new small leaves. Soil is bone dry but I gave it a good watering so maybe (hopefully) it will continue growing.
  20. Great info thanks so much! 100 years ago our forests must have been so much diversified. Large elms, chestnuts. Now the ash will be gone. Guess it fits the pattern of decreasing wildlife of all kinds...
  21. Tamarack, The pure American Chestnut was given to me when it was about 10" tall. So I think this is the third summer for it. I planted it in my lower pasture about 50 feet from the dirt road. The deer usually stay away from the road and the tree was mostly buried in snow. Now it is really growing so I will put deer fencing around it. It does have a main stem but as you can see the lower branches are pretty low. Should I do anything or just let it grow as is? I am not really a tree person and thought the Chestnut blight had passed now that the Chestnuts are gone, guess not. I was down at Wellesley college last week for my nieces graduation. Beautiful campus with huge old trees. I spotted an American Chestnut. Walked over and there was a stone saying 1899. Cool to see such an old tree. Here is my American Chestnut. This thread reminds me to go down and water it. Soil is bone dry. I had a second and idiot me ran it over when it was tiny. Argghh...
  22. So many Ash trees around here. I have one in my backyard that is the centerpiece of my flower beds. Also one next to the road in my front yard. I didn't realize that the Asian longhorned beetle kills about all of the ash trees. Really sad. About the Chestnut trees. I knew they were wiped out. 25 years ago a nursery was trying to grow a hybrid Asia/American chestnut tree. I bought one. It is doing great, about 20 feet tall. Then 2 years ago a neighbor had a friend that was having success in growing 100% baby American Chestnut trees. He gave me a 12" sapling. It is also doing great and is about 3 feet tall. Here is a picture of my frontyard with the hybrid chestnut and ash tree behind it.
  23. I don't usually look at this thread but saw the tree post. I am trying to repopulate American Chestnuts on my property. I have a 20-year-old Chinese American hybrid growing and it's doing well. A friend of mine knows someone who is growing 100% American Chestnuts and he gave us 2. Planted last year, so far so good. I was down in Wellesley Mass at my niece's graduation and noticed they had a very old American Chestnut. Placard said planted 1899. Very cool to see...
  24. From my DD run this morning. Lots of brown lawns developing around the hood! Really unusual for early June
