Winter 2020 New England Banter and General Obs
wxeyeNH replied to CapturedNature's topic in New England
I don't know anything about this trail but I think (and could be very wrong) that Go Pro cams are wide angle so it might make this trail look a bit narrower than it is. Again I could be totally wrong. -
Holy crap. I have not been on the boards or looking at models much lately but just did. What an active pattern coming up starting late this week. So many precipitation types and storms. Winter is going to make a comeback throwing all kinds of stuff at us.

Just checking in. 3-4" of hard packed snow at the house. Just did a 120 miles of driving, Newfound Lake to Dartmouth to Concord. Very thin snow cover the whole way. Bare ground in just about all places except on my hill. Well less than 50% coverage in Concord. Very quiet weather pattern which for personal reasons makes me very happy.

33.7F Moderate rain. Some catpaws have been mixed in from time to time

33.2/32 Light snow just started

Hi Guys (and Diane). I have been missing in action the past week to 10 days. My husband caught Pneumonia over 3 weeks ago and it has been quite the battle. At first it was not too bad with home care but by last weekend he was in the hospital. Things got worse and worse and we almost lost him on Monday in ICU. He has been on a ventilator since then but finally today came off and is doing better but he has a strange fungal infection and they told me to expect several more weeks in the hospital. That is the only downside of living in NNE away from big medical centers. So give your love ones an extra hug because life can change in a flash. Taking a hospital break and looking at what might happen this evening. 4pm 33.1/32F here. Was 32.7/31 when I got home 2 hours ago. Noticed Euro gives me a few sloppy inches this eve but seems too warm?

My afternoon high today was 8F, low -1.2F although I was at 14F at midnight. Will today be the coldest high afternoon temp of the season? Next Tuesday might be colder. We are just about at the climatological lowest temperatures of the year about now.
-
Some light snow has begun for tonight's little system 31.8/28 Seems like winter finally arrives for NNE. Bit of snow tonight. Then the Thursday system. Arctic air with upslope after that. Then the weekends storm. GFS has a 960mb storm crossing the area in fantasy land around next weekend. Let's just hope it's not a cutter to bring a big melt but like I said that's fantasy land. During this time enough cold air for the duration so there will be no melting

It's Sunday evening and I'm safely back under freezing. Yeah, that was quite the thaw. Snow is around my parts of Central NH is still mostly intact in the woods and below about 800 feet. The hills really took the brunt as they stayed in the warm air all day yesterday, through the night and all day today. Down below it was cooler all and all and there was less wind. In a way Im happy we got wiped clean. It's only very temporary with winter storms looming for later this week. The warmth cleared the ice dams on the north side of the house and the deer are out happily munching in the fields and finding old apples and acorns. Its a good chance for them to get a couple days worth of nutrients before we recoat the landscape. Newfound Lake is only 1/2 ice covered and no one has put Bob houses on the ice yet. Pretty unusual for mid January. The people with snowmobiles must be very unhappy. Very little sledding this year. The ski resorts can start making snow again now. Several winter storms on the horizon so part 2 of winter resumes now.

I know this Kuchera derived clown map should not be taken (even near) to face value but it's fun to look at. 18Z GFS through Sunday AM

110pm looks like Logan shot up briefly to 73.4F. Whether that is accurate I don't know but it will make headlines for the warmest temperature ever recorded over 153 years. What a run. 70F yesterday, 64F for a low last night and 73F today. Probably longest, warmest stretch for Boston?
-
56.7F Cold front looks to be about 25 miles northeast of me Just getting back on the boards since signing off early last evening. What was Boston's low? I have to check. Wow. I absolutely didn't think I would loose my pack. It was a glaciated 8" pack before this torch. 2 pictures below. 230pm yesterday and just now. The strong SW wind and sun plus a high of 58 did it. Still snow in the woods all around me but it's going fast. Sun about to come out
-
I bet you don't loose your pack. You go above 40F for 36 hours and probably never hit 50F. Storms lined up for next week. You'll be fine. I doubt I loose my pack either but hopefully a few bare patches for my herd of deer

My dentists is also a photographer. Last night the full moon and clear skies worked out to get this great picture

Nice nippy January day. Mid teens look to be the high for me. Waiting on Euro to see ice potential for later this weekend.. I'm still excited about Brian's squall last night. A few hours with bursts of squalls to give 7" is to be remembered. Happy Birthday Scott Alex, thanks for fixing your cam. Perfect view of the summit of Mt Washington Diane, next time I'll make sure you are working before I visit PS You can tell I don't like handles. Jeez, this isn't a political forum. We all get along up here
-
I'm watching that CAD signature in my area. Like Brian said don't need a 31F ZR event. So many times I just hang on with cold air coming from the northeast. Meanwhile a nippy day 13.3F at noon

Winter 2020 New England Banter and General Obs

I made a timelapse for a part of last evening with the streamer just to my south. It's kind of hard to see (best viewed in a dark area) but you can see the snow reflecting off the lights and the moon lighting up the top of the clouds. We just missed the streamer but it looked like a bit of those lake effect videos. Wish it had been daylight https://video.nest.com/clip/c6343db4407748fb8ba9d5ff2ea45978.mp4 -

Don't you have that durable sleet/snow underneath from last week? A 2 day torch is not going to get rid of that very easily -

Brian, that is great. That might be a lifetime top 10 event for you? 1.5" for me 1.9" from a Coop observer friend in Bristol NH about 5 miles south of me and a 6.9" for you another 10-12 miles south of him. Just a real WOW. -

Nice severe snow squalls moving Central NH. I've only had the run of the mill squalls with probably an inch or so but glad some of you are getting the super intense ones. Not a good commute on Rt 93 right now. Was slightly above freezing and now it's dark with near zero visibility in many places. -

29F S+ Vis about 1/8 mile Getting dark so you can't really see flakage -
Getting dark to the west. Always interesting to see what makes it over the mountains. Meanwhile, it looks like quite the icestorm potential later this weekend for someone. Will it be S Quebec or NNE? Seems these ice storm products are always over done but even 1/2 of these amounts would cause big problems.

As I await the fropa and snow squalls I'll post this picture. So many frickin deer in our apple orchard last night. Bucks and does. I can see a dozen or more yarding up in the woods right now. We had a bumper crop of apples but they are now about gone. Lots of working digging through the 5-8" of that sleet/freezing rain/snow combo from last week . Here is a picture of the activity from the past 24 hours. The 3.75" of snow from two days ago had covered the old tracks so this is from last night. I know you are not suppose to feed deer any food and I don't anymore but since they all yard up behind the house I figure that I might buy some deer apples and scatter them around each day. That is what they have been eating the past couple of months so it's not changing their metabolism. They are smart and know the south facing slope will always have less snow and be the first to melt off so they stick around the house each winter. Wonder if this weekends warmth will be enough to melt some bare spots? Probably not since this snow has so much water content and is very durable.
