Central PA Winter 2022/2023

Hey guys...I've been entertaining myself looking at the 0Z GFS data. There's so much interesting stuff to see with this storm. The run keeps getting colder Friday afternoon and evening with temps in the 40's at 7AM as the front approaches (and passes through MDT between 9 and 10AM) crashing all the way down to 5 to 10 degrees by 7pm. Wind chills drop below zero by mid afternoon, reaching their coldest of between 10 and 15 BELOW for LSV straight through Saturday afternoon, and do not rise above zero F until Sunday afternoon. I don't know if I can remember experiencing below zero wind chills continuously for 36+ hours before. Finally, as you will see below in this snow map, there is an explosion of snow between MDT and LNS behind the cold front that delivers 9 inches to MDT and 6" to LNS with western Lanco exceeding 10" in spots. This is using Kuchera which given the frigid temps would likely reflect amounts more accurately. I know the map will change again in 6 hours, but it's still pretty neat to look at potential... -

Hey, please, no apologies are necessary!! I never considered you to be more than any other sports poster. The first time I made that suggestion was at least a year ago, or maybe two. While I really don't get bent out of shape about sports posts I honestly do not understand the reluctance of anyone in creating a sports and/or banter thread. Last time I looked, there were no posting minimums that are in effect here, are there? Who cares if the thread only gets posts a few times per week? What difference should that make as to the validity of such a thread? (I'm not pointing anything I'm saying at you, even if it might look that way. My comments are directed to our subforum as a whole). Finally, it's incredibly easy to keep one tab opened to our weather page AND keep a second tab open to the banter page. It takes one second to switch between the two and to refresh the page.) -

I'd like to chime in here with the other recent posters to say that I love all the posts from @Blizzard of 93. It's funny but it seems like once every winter our subforum goes through an emotionally driven "episode" like we all witnessed this morning. Ultimately we all always "make up" and move on. Let's hope this time it's the same. I know there is at least one other poster here that isn't in to sports. For the most part, neither am I. My only very tiny gripe is that I wish the discussions in this specific forum could be limited to weather-related posts primarily. Of course, the last time I brought this up and suggested that a separate banter thread be created to cover all other topics besides weather, I was pretty quickly dismissed. I'll say it again, why can't we have a separate banter thread for anything else but weather? If you want to, create a sports-only banter thread so all sports fans know where to go to discuss their favorite teams/players. If it costed money to create and maintain any additional threads, well then I might look at this differently. But, threads are free! Think about it, please? -

This will probably enthuse you...GFS predicting 52 degrees when the ball/pickle/strawberry drops at midnight, followed by an enthusiastically warm high temp of 63 degrees that afternoon. -

Currently, the temp continues to hold rock steady at 32.2 degrees. High temp so far today has been 32.4. That wonderful period of pure snow was very short-lived, however. I'm estimating between 0.2" and 0.3" of snowfall accumulation. When the snow stopped I went back to sleet, with perhaps a little rain mixed in. -

I forgot to mention that ice accretion continued earlier. My trees easily have over 0.10" of ice covering the branches. Oh, yeah, the snow is getting heavier and the flakes are getting bigger. -

Temp continues to hold steady at 32.2 degrees. The sleet has come to an end and steady snow is rapidly developing. Light, and wet, but steady nonetheless. Mulch/ground whitening progressing nicely. -

Changeover to pure sleet almost complete. Mulch is beginning to turn white. Temp holding at 32.2 degrees. Hoping for a change to snow. >>Edit...the first few wet flakes are beginning to come down with the sleet. -

Hi all. Temp has been very slowly creeping upwards and has now reached 32.0. It continues to ZR with maybe a few IP mixed in. Everything has a pretty good coating of ice except sidewalks and pavement. Apparently I had heavy freezing rain for a fair amount of time as my tipping bucket has recorded 0.82". But, for the moment it has stopped tipping due to internal ice buildup. I have my clear-vue gauge out and will get an official measurement later. I'm anxious to see if there is any kind of changeover to snow a little later. Will update accordingly. -

26.8 degrees with still mostly clear skies! Dew point 21.5. That should be good to drop me down to between 24 and 25 once the precip gets underway. -

Wow!! That’s an incredible 31.685 inches of mercury! I think I’ve witnessed a pressure over 31.00” maybe twice in my life. One time was back in the 70s. It peaked at 31.09”. I can’t remember when the second time was…perhaps the 80s. -

34 here with everything wet...not white. No signs of any accumulation earlier. -

Jan '16 snowstorm was on a Saturday, and it was all snow start to finish. I recorded 35", the single-largest snow event of my life. (I was 56 at the time). We were all going crazy with the unprecedented amounts the NAM was putting out. I remember one run showed 42" over Cumberland county. Unreal! -

An incredibly frosty morning with a low of 15.4 degrees. When I saw total frost covering the ground at 10:30pm last night I knew there would be a lot of it this morning. Rooves and cartops were pure white. This had to be close to the most frost I have ever seen, or at least in the top 3. -

A very frosty 17.2 degrees this morning. Already back up to 35 at 10:30. -
After a frosty low of 23.2 this morning, my afternoon high was a very pleasant 58.8 degrees. That's a 35.6 degree diurnal. Low dew points helped in both the cooling and the warming process. It was just nice to have the sun feel warm.
-
At 2:00pm it's a glorious 52.9 degrees with clear skies and winds of 5-10mph. Humidity very dry at 27% and a dew point of 19.8 degrees. Feels great after a low this morning of 19.9 degrees.
-
A mid-winter-like low of 14.7 degrees early this morning. Normal low for today is 31 and the normal high is 51. At noon I've warmed back up to 38 on my way to 44. This morning really was pretty unusual for how low we went so early. I can remember plenty of years where the first sub-20 low didn't occur until well into December. I'm not upset by the appearance of a period of moderation later this week into next week. I still want to enjoy fall for a few more weeks before winter makes its appearance.
-
My total QPF for the event was 0.64". Approximately 1" of snow accumulated although it definitely was a little more on the grass...closer to 1.5". The rest was a combination of sleet and rain. My temp dropped to 32.4 during the heavy snow and remained at 32.5 for the rest of the event. It only began to rise a little after the precip stopped.
-
After more than one glorious hour of heavy snow with a temp of 32.4 degrees I have recorded an average of 1.0" of wet snow. It was coming down pretty good until 15 minutes ago when it appeared to suddenly stop. I think it might changed to a very light rain. I'm not hearing any pinging, so no sleet. Based on what is being reported to my southwest by @Cashtown_Coopand @Bubbler86, it might be changing to rain for good. It would be great if the rain isn't enough to wash the snow away and there is some white to wake up to tomorrow morning. That one hour of heavy snow was really enjoyable, and of course a surprise as well. Temp now back up to 32.5.
-
Wow! Over the last 15 minutes the snow has increased to moderate to almost heavy with bigger flakes. Everything is turning white including the sidewalks/street. Since it's wet all the trees are also turning white. Temp pushed down even lower to 32.7. Might just make it officially to 32.0.
-
About 20 minutes ago the precip switched over to all snow. Since that time mulch is more than 75% white with some white appearing on the grass. It's between light and moderate, so we'll see where we go from here. The heavier precip has dropped the temperature and it is now down to 33.1 which is plenty cold for accumulations everywhere at night. Happy to hear that areas that didn't think they would see a flake have indeed been treated to white rain. Enjoy the next few hours at least. I'm hoping the NWS changeover to rain forecast to take place before 10:00pm is delayed and pure rain is minimized. It could happen.
-
I've had the variety of light precip types since it began around 2:00. Other than a very short burst of flakes near the beginning, a period of steady snow arrived around 4:00. Lasted less than 10 minutes but while falling immediately started turning my mulch white. Temp continues to slowly fall from 37 back at 2:00 to the present 34.3. Even if it stays between 33 and 34 that's cold enough at night for accumulations on the streets.
