Congrats Texas. I also read they broke records for highest electricity demand. Of the ten possible heat records yesterday (high minimum temperature and high temperature at five first order climate sites), we managed to tie or break nine of them! Here`s a quick summary: Climate Site | Min Temp | Record High Min Temp (Year) ---------------------------------------------------------- City of Houston | 82 | 81 (2009) Houston Hobby | 81 | 80 (2020) Galveston | 85 | 83 (2021) College Station | 80 | 80 (2009) Palacios | 84 | 83 (2020) Climate Site | Max Temp | Record High Temp (Year) ----------------------------------------------------- City of Houston | 105 | 101 (1998) Houston Hobby | 104 | 100 (1964) Galveston | 96 | 96 (1931) College Station | 111 | 109 (1917) Palacios | 95 | 99 (2005) As astute followers of Southeast Texas climate will know (or anyone who takes a quick glance at the tables should be able to infer), record high min temperatures in this area have fallen at a pretty rapidly clip this century. The afternoon high temperature records have not been falling at quite the same pace, so to have a day where so many records at both ends of the day fall really speaks to just how extreme this July 10 is in the historical record. To really drive it home, College Station`s high of 111 is the second highest max temperature on record, going back to 1888. It is only one degree off the all-time record high temperature for the city, which was recorded on September 4, 2000. It is the hottest July day on record for College Station, eclipsing the 110 mark last seen on July 11, 1917. Houston`s 105 degree mark matches the July record mark, last seen July 26, 1954. However, it is not the hottest mark so early in the year, as June 29, 2013 did reach 107. It also is "only" the 17th hottest day in the official record for the city. Hobby`s 104 degree high does put it in the top 10 all time, tying it for 8th. But it is neither a record mark for July, nor for so early in the year, as it fell one degree short of July 8, 1939 (and also June 29, 2013). Persistent onshore flow meant that while Galveston still saw a daily record today, it fell fairly far down the all-time record ledger. Its high of 96 is not good enough for even the top 50 all- time, and only good for tenth on the list of July records. This is mainly because the really extreme days at Galveston tend to come when onshore winds are suppressed, and can really spike when offshore westerlies can advect some hotter, mainland air over the Island. Finally, newcomer Palacios just couldn`t keep pace with the more established first order climate sites. It did manage to set a new record high minimum temperature yesterday, but fell four degrees short of its record high from 2005. Like Galveston, Palacios` location very near the water likely moderated afternoon highs slightly, keeping the site from really threatening those record highs.

Was pretty warm on the CT coast today with some good dews most of the day. High temps. HVN 89 GON 88 BDR 87

Pretty crazy fireworks gone wrong video.

82/73 here.

@powderfreak Rubbermaid industrial and supposedly bear proof trash can was easily defeated. Its been a very active summer here in Northern NJ with bears at our lake cabin.
-
Sea breeze just kicked in here as well and it's setting up for a stunning evening.
-
@Damage In Tolland he knows how to rage it. Magic mushrooms with Stein...
-
Yep. Its set to cryogenic according to my wife at 65. I'm from Sweden and she's from VT so it balances out. Haha It's all powered from solar/heat pumps so the energy usage/cost fortunately isn't a issue.

I got a song proposition for you. I am going to title it blinded by the dews..

What a special one. 69/69 .NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/... Forecast on track. Minor adjustments made to temp/dewpts to reflect current obs and trends. Mid-level ridge axis slides east of the region today, with surface high pressure centered offshore. The biggest difference from Saturday is a modest,synoptically- driven southerly flow that develops. This may help dew points climb slightly during the day, especially along eastern coastal sections.

Was hoping for a Sea breeze but that failed. Any mets want to chime in as why its not setting up on the south coast?
-
Still waiting for that sea breeze. The south coast is still roasting.
-
Some fantastic dews down here at the shore. 87/71.
-
Should be a nice sea breeze later. The high provides only a very light W/NW flow across the interior. A sea breeze develops and push north across Long Island and southern Connecticut through the afternoon, providing some relief from the heat as the onshore wind develops. Just waiting for this sea mist to clear here before heading out on the boat..

Launched high here and already at 82/66. What a fantastic summer day.

74 for the high temp and I had a record June day for solar production.

My wife is from Maplewood and has a lot of family in the Parissappny area. Our lake cabin is in Denville which is another town I have heard you mention before. If I recall correctly thats where your from?
-
Long Valley on 46 near Budd Lake.
-
@tamarack I bet this brings back some memories. It's an older picture from April but I'm up in NNJ at our lake cabin and the station was in a NJ town you have mentioned before. Take a guess on the location.

My hydrangeas look terrible this year. I think it's because they were showing leaves in like early March this year and then they got hit with some cold.

So you have that small electric utility Liberty? In a Monday filing with the Public Utilities Commission, Liberty Utilities proposed increasing the per kilowatt hour price of electricity from 11.11 cents, the rate in effect from February to July of this year, to 22.23 cents starting in July. That means a typical household would see a 47 percent increase in its electric bill, according to consumer advocate Don Kreis. (Other charges on the bill would remain unchanged.) A household currently paying $150 per month would see their electricity increase to $220 per month. https://newhampshirebulletin.com/briefs/electric-prices-set-to-double/

Another great month for those with solar. I have had record production the last 2 months. Only 4 low production days in June so far.

Here was the report from Blackstone labs for my wife's Subaru. The test cost $30 but the savings was huge with confirming to be able to extend the oil change interval nearly double the recommend Subaru 6k change.
-
Synthetic oil can last an extremely long time and most people change it when they could easily extend the oil change way longer. I have sent Mobil 1 synthetic oil samples out to Blackstone labs which tests your oil. The results on my wife's Subaru with Mobil 1 0w20 at 8k which was 2k over the recommend 6k change showed the oil was still perfectly fine. The lab said this oil would easily run to 10k. I think 10k is a good number to use with synthetic. Those oil life estimators are just guessing. A better name is oil life estimator. They do not monitor any direct physical or chemical property of oil; they only accumulate data from the vehicle’s computer and predict how your driving habits and operating conditions have affected the oil’s viscosity, total base number (a measure of remaining detergency), oxidation level and other factors. Since the OLM can’t measure these key properties like a chemist in a lab would measure them, how can it know when the oil has, for example, only 10 percent life remaining? It can’t – it simply estimates oil life based on an algorithm.
