They're not supposed to as per official guidelines. They should be taking intermediate depth measurements to capture maximum depth. Unfortunately, there is a ton of miscommunication on this issue.

Yeah there can be significant differences in max depth and regular clearing amounts. Like was mentioned in that writeup, 30" was out of line.

  2. Yeah this time I actually did set a board down on existing snow after sunset, a few hours before the snow started so it would cool and accumulate from the get-go. The board had 5", cars had 1" less and the front yard part that melted off and turned to a muddy quagmire yesterday had 3". This pretty well proved (at least to me) the melting from underneath thing I was debating with the scientist yesterday ;)

25 miles west - maybe even less - and the east-of-the-river contingent will rip for a while tomorrow. Gonna be close.

Well, a bunch of the afternoon models have this further west and if you look at the WV images from the last few hours it really looks like this wants to end up another coastal hugger rather than a bm storm. It just feels like the eastern part of the LHV is in for another whack and the backside snows on Wednesday could put another fresh coating on top just for good measure.

  4. Over the last 20 years we've only had a few inverted troughs really produce for us, generally you need to be 30-50 miles further east to benefit. I can think of a couple that were a bunch of fun to watch unfold, one in particular that gave us a completely unforecasted 13" of total fluff one afternoon in Patterson and another that was 8" of pillowy softness overnight in March.

The responses in this thread are hilarious. 21" in my town... give me a break. Even if you included the existing pack and took hourly measurements, it wouldn't have been close to that. I think the general public are bigger weenies than we are sometimes

I drove through your area this morning and noticed how well you hold onto snow compared to just west of you. From the Taconic down into Rhinebeck it drops slowly then falls off a cliff as you cross 9G. How close are you to the Bulls Head Road exit? Nice area there.

  6. We used to have a great driver, he would actually slow down as he got to driveways and if they weren't already cleared he would stick the wing blade out and push the bank back to the downstream side. He also alternated which side of the street he came down for the first pass to even out the bank sizes. Right now my side is a bit over 3 feet high and 4 feet thick while the other side is mid shin and not even a foot thick. It's going to be weeks before I can park on the parking pad I carved out because it's filled with that plow bank so it's juggling cars to get the one I need out which is an unnecessary pain in the butt. Oh well, I got the frustration out so I sort of feel better, doesn't hurt that I finished a cup of coffee either :P

  7. Cool storm :) I wish there wasn't so much shoveling involved though ;) So far I've spent a little over 4 hours and still have at least another hour to go. I didn't bring the yardstick out with me last night but it was easily 16" and might have been closer to 18", I'll measure the settled amount in a little while when I get out to finish cleaning up. I really wish it had been a few degrees colder, this would have easily hit 2 feet and wouldn't be so damned heavy to shovel although the lowest layer would still be mush because it was so warm the few days leading up to the storm.

    Facebook quality rant ahead:

I really wanted to hurt the town plow driver last night <_< He made 2 high speed passes down my side of the street yesterday then for the final pass last night he went by at about 30mph with the wing blade out and threw snow nearly 20 feet up the driveway I had just almost finished clearing. The street is only 11 feet wide so when he goes back the other way there's almost nothing left to push off that side. Since it's a dead end with a cul de sac it takes a few minutes for him to get back so I pushed as much as I could across the street rather than lifting it onto a head high 4 foot thick bank so it would just get pushed away. So what did he do as he got to it? Lifted the blade and left it there, tooted the horn just to prove how big a dick he was and that was it. So that left me pushing it all back then lifting it anyway :( Now when I go out I still have to move a section about 7' x 3' worth of super heavy consolidated plow bank and do about 400 square feet of the upper driveway that sucks to do because the house is in the way on two sides and there's a four foot high wall on the third that already has a two foot snow wall on top of it and the shed and a car on the fourth. Every shovel load needs to be lifted and carried down the driveway and lofted onto that head high bank by my fat old self :weight_lift: Thanks for listening :cory:

Lights have been flickering for the past 15 mins. Thankfully the generator is ready to go :)

Yep a few flickers here too. The streets on either side of me are out judging by the generators running on both sides. I've got my (shiny new) 5500 all fueled up and ready to go and all of the wires are still in place from yesterday.

Still dumping. These 3"+/hr rates are just nutty especially since it's been this way without letting up since before 2pm. I spent almost 2 hours shoveling and there's easily 8" new since I started at a bit before 4. I came in at 6 and the plow just went by again, the new plow pile is up to my mailbox :( Looks like another 2 hours of exercise is ahead of me.

  9. That's legitimately heavy sow out there and has been for the last ~3 hours. Occasionally, like right now, it mixes with heavy sleet and the visibility improves but when the flakes get really huge it drops to under 100 yards. The roads are a total mess with at least 4" on them and we're pretty well over 6" overall now. The power has flickered a few times but is still on. Fingers crossed it stays that way.

For me, before here going back through them there was Eastern, WWBB, then the good ole ne.weather back in the late 90s. I know I’ve mentioned it before, but I recall DT screaming at me that I was a moron and there was no way it was snowing up here as hard as it was LOL. He was quite a trip back then.

ne.weather, that was it. I think DT went off on me at least a few times too :)

It's pretty light snow out there, tiny flakes not accumulating quickly at all. I don't even have 1" down yet. Thankfully not much for wind but what there is seems to be out of the south. The street has no snow on it at all but the puddle in front of my house is pretty big, ground must be really warm.

My guess is we’re older than some of the posters in the model thread?

I certainly am. There's a few that are quite a bit older than me but just a few.

We have a great little community of folks in here for sure. I think the biggest factor is that most of the guys here have been around the block a few times and have seen it all... feast, famine, model busts in both directions. They know it's just the weather and you can't control it. I joined eastern about a decade ago and I'm still pretty much a newbie compared to many of my interior comrades.

Yup, just a much more mature group. We really should have a gtg sometime this year.

I've been around these boards about as long as Rob. There were two before Eastern, the names are getting away from me though. It's been a fun run for sure.

Doesn't it figure, I didn't think we were going to get power back before the storm so I went and got a nice generator this afternoon. Got it all set up and running and right about sunset the power kicked back on.

So about tomorrow - I'm figuring 10-12" with a fair bit of wind. Sunday really looks interesting too.

  12. It's not so much trouble getting it delivered its what it costs. I could just as easily get a generator and be able to have lights and heat rather than just heat in one room from the fireplace. I'm also not trusting that my chimney is going to be able to handle this for too much longer it's already been running for 5 days straight. It would be a different story if I had a wood stove that burned clean but all of the wood that seems to be available now is wet and it produces more smoke than heat and a fireplace is pretty much the worst way to try to generate heat anyway.
