Yeah it was unfortunate.  It is scheduled tomorrow and grooming is expected to get it.  There was a bunch of snow made up on Jake's Ride/near the top of the Toll House lift.  Grooming was pushing it out but they had a snowcat go down and the trail was unable to be finished with rubble, cat tracks and unskiable stuff.  That prevented skiers from getting off the lift and getting out of that top area (technically a snow/surface condition issue).  So the decision was made to not open.  The grooming team will clean it up tonight and it is expected tomorrow.  I'm in at 5am and will hopefully get the all-clear when I radio the grooming team.  If I remember I can shoot you a private message.  Definitely an unplanned thing today. I'm confident it'll open tomorrow and stay open.

Awesome!  Glad to hear, and thanks for all the info.  I just switched our trip to Fri night to Monday.  That should make skiing a bit more tolerable and hopefully get us the most bang for our buck.  Maybe get out late morning Sat, all day Sunday and some runs in Monday am before leaving

Saturday morning is the one that’ll be next level at Stowe.

Operations are usually curtailed to lower mountain lifts and/or Gondola.  FourRunner Quad has shelter at Octagon at the top but I could see lower mountain lifts only and maybe Gondola as a viable option.

Wind hold threshold drops greatly too… any decent breeze and lift goes on hold as no one wants to come close to any issues.  The amount of risk assumed in those conditions is near zero.  Wind can also trip sensors from chairs rocking, even slightly as tolerances of those sensors is extremely small. Normally that’s no problem, a lift mechanic just goes and verifies haul rope placement and it takes <10 minutes.  It’s not ideal but it’s a CPS (cable positioning system) fault that lifts at most ski areas can see a few times a day in some cases.  However, in that type of cold, even a 6-min stop is a problem.  So if there’s a chance, lift goes on hold.  Wind hold tolerance goes way down.

Decisions likely made Thursday and Friday for any operational changes within the next 24 hours based on final forecasts.

Personally, I’d try Friday and definitely Sunday.  Saturday is out unless it’s one run for the novelty of it.

Thanks!  We are again, like last year, staying at ski in/out at Toll House, so my thought was when really cold we just hit toll house slopes down low, but today they noted lift was down due to snow conditions.  That seemed strange as the previous days it was simply down for snowmaking, or so it sounded it is was supposed to open today.  Really hoping it is open this weekend.  Thoughts?

I would consult @powderfreak he works there. If there is a gondola I’d stick to that and dress for Antarctica . The chair lift Ride would be ...bad .

Are you able  to just wait and ski Sunday. No wind and rapidly warming temps during mid am .

We'll probably ski Friday and again on Sunday.  Find something else to do Saturday.  Heading back to Philly area Sunday, so we'll just be a little later.

My guess is there should be warnings out for the conditions on the mountain . Frostbite will be a huge danger to anyone not very prepared and or experienced with much below zero temperatures and wind. Windchills -40 to -50 and temps near -30 at mountain Sat am . Sunday looks calm and less severe a couple hours after dawn

    Wonderful

  5. so, for those in the know at Stowe (@powderfreak) how terrible is it going to be there Friday and Saturday?  Heading up with family and I know the cold is going to be brutal.  What winds and chances of lifts shutting down?  This is pretty terrible timing for us.

Was able to get out and ski Montage for four hours this morning. Conditions and coverage were far better than I expected given the warm weather we’ve had here in the mid-Atlantic. They also have some interesting trails-pretty steep on the lower mountain (albeit only about 500 vertical, the top 500 vertical is low intermediate).

Unfortunately won’t be able to ski for nearly  a month as I’ll be in Miami for two weekends and then Austin.

I’ll definitely try to ski the weekend of 2/17 if possible and then I’m heading to Tremblant the last weekend of the month. Hard to believe it almost February and I only have 8 days in.

White Lightning is pretty crazy for a short run.

I mean we are in late Dec and snow can't stick to the roads? Actually anything besides grass and car tops. Before you know it March is here. Hate to sound like a Debbie Downer but we can't catch a break. A 3"-6"/4"-8" storm seems like miles away...

Wasn’t it a high of like 55 at 3am?  Kinda hard for a short period of snow to stick to roads at that temp and soaking wet from rain

Whos debating?  Just asking a pro a few questions.

Then answer the question.  If you speak of warming from 4000 years ago, what process back then was similar to mans releasing of carbon locked in the crust?  The answer, nothing compares in earths history.  NOTHING.

Made a post elsewhere...this is becoming a potential where we whiten the ground even with a poorly timed setup like we are seeing. Im not going to say it cant fail, but almost every model has now shown solutions at h5 that look fail-ish yet it still snows on those progs. We are seeing a good bit of wiggle room. And as someone else mentioned we dont need a HECS. Im quite content with a ground whitener for the 24th-25th holiday anything more is an absolute bonus :santa::snowing:

From your lips to Gods ears.
