Wish I was fully healed and back to my normal self, I’d be winter camping up on Mt Sterling this weekend or at least hiking up at Max Patch. As it is I’ll only be watching it fall and maybe taking a drive up 209 while hoping to bust high on GSP’s forecast at the house and make a run at 6”

Pea size hail hitting now. Embedded storm is strengthening.
I didn’t have any hail over here I don’t think but dang did it pour. Thundered right over the house and shook it pretty good, it just hits different at elevation lol.

Our wild ride starts in 4-6 hours with the rain and squall line, then 24-36 hours of flow snow in some spots. Point and click forecast has me with 2-4” total accumulation.

12z euro looks pretty good with 4-10" totals on the border. One thing to keep in mind is those totals are at 10:1 when we should have 15-20:1 ratios according to other guidance.

No not at all but there is a lot of meltdowns this weekend and people canceling winter already when we are just in the first of January. Seems like we go through this same song and dance every damn year even though most people's average snowfall is minimal.
That’s what makes me chuckle and shake my head somewhat, if anyone should be complaining about this winter to date it’s us mountain, and to a lesser extent, foothill folks, especially above 3000’ in the border counties. Beech and sugar are something like 40” behind average right now, we haven’t even had a legit “region wide” flow snow yet and the SW mountains have barely had anything.
Looking objectively, we had cold sooner this season (October, November and December all had spells) as it took until this week last year to have any real cold temps looking back at my data from my weather station and the only region wide decent synoptic storm that wasn’t flow snow related didn’t occur until MLK weekend. Historically it’s been eh the past few years but this year is at least off to a better start compared to last year.

I have a view of Cataloochee when headed out to the main highway after I get to the bottom of my mountain. Looks like some moisture is falling over that way, maybe @Maggie Ace can confirm.

Hanging steady at 41, wet bulb is 35. Doubtful I’ll see anything more than some token flake but it could surprise me. I’d feel more comfortable if I was another 500’+ up in elevation though.

This gust front is moving through. Major squall line.
Was wild up on the mountain when that rolled through.

Crazy how just a mountain range away can be so different.
I can’t think of any other mountainous area in the lower 48 that has as varied weather over such short distances. This month alone I’ve seen it clear back towards Crabtree Bald, some clouds at my house coming over the top of the ridge and then the Buncombe side be socked in.

Merry Christmas everyone. 5.5 at my house this morning.

Parents have a busted pipe in Hickory, I’ve got faucets dripping while I’m gone but the way the pipe is ran in my home shouod keep any issues to a minimum as there is only one 5’ run of exterior wall pipe running and that’s for the hose bib and runs down the CMU block wall in the garage. Temp shot up quick, was 16 when I left at 11:30.

We've made -3.6 and still slowly dropping.
Worth noting I suppose that the HRRR does bring a little more moisture in tonight, mainly for the northern mountains. It's not much but with 25-26:1 ratios it won't take much.Haven’t caught you yet, -1.5 so far.

Daytime high of 7 at 2 pm under full sun all day is impressive. The slide down has begun as my house has now dipped below 6 degrees. I think it would be a given but still wanna see if I go below zero tonight and how cold it will get; gut says -2 but I also thought I’d hit 0 this morning and came up short. Mid to upper teens down here in Waynesville.

Nice! We just had a dusting here. Temp at 8 currently.
Surprised you are that warm. Down to 2.8 now, think I’m gonna stall out at 2 for the day but maybe I can make a a run at zero or below in the next hour. Wind sounds and looks brutal with those temps.

Gorgeous @Buckethead! I’ve got .5-1” on the ground and clear skies. Wind comes and goes currently with the temp down to 4.5. To

Man if I could get some decent flake size it would be nice, moisture must be lacking in the snow growth zone right now. Measured an inch, 29 degrees and still have the pixie dust coming down at a decent clip.
