It didn't feel that warm today but was still 83/71 which is 9 degrees above normal. I think we have a good chance to break the all time August record tomorrow. Normal right now is 77/60, cooler than I thought it would be. We've had such warm August recently that I forgot what normal is.

I have also noticed myself acclimating to the hot weather of late.  I’m still ready for cooler weather, though!

:) As I've mentioned before, I try to be as balanced and moderate as possible about things. I refused to be bullied into doing something, but at the same time have been very careful and thoughtful with interactions. I've been doing research and having some very good, honest conversations with some friends who I respect very much....some of whom are pretty traditional conservatives and HAVE been vaccinated. They made some very valid points after I ASKED for their opinions and wisdom about the vaccine. This is a very difficult decision for me, but I believe it's time.

I was also hesitant and just got my second Pfizer shot last week.  I did some “research” but it’s hard/impossible to really “know” what is right.  In the end, it came down to this for me:  4 of 8 people that I know first-hand who had the illness are dealing some kind of long term effect from the virus.  I know of many, many more (100+?) people who have been vaccinated and I don’t know of even one negative effect except for the expected hungover feel for a day or two.

Incidentally, I work for a private construction company full of strong conservatives (not bandwagon Trumpers but mainly long-term fiscal conservatives), and I was surprised that nearly everyone except me got the shot as soon as it was available for them.

I have to mow my lawn twice a week, I mowed it this past Friday and gonna head out soon to mow it again. It's almost like someone put miracle grow on it Haha.

I just mowed last night because it already needed it and it would be a mess later this week if I didn’t.  It’s like peak May growing season in August!

I feel like this summer definitely felt warm, not as warm as last year but certainly not average. June was quite warm and while July was below average its our warmest month on average, and August was a scorcher. While high temps were not overly above average, overnight lows were very high all summer and humidity levels were higher than normal.

I wish I kept statistics to back it up, but this summer definitely felt more hot, muggy, and wet than any summer I can recall in our area. It seems like if it wasn’t raining (often heavy), it was 80s-90s and super humid.

Ironically, it was in the low 70s and cloudy both Saturday and Sunday and it felt great.  Still humid but we were finally able to play some outside games at parties without misery.  I can’t wait for the cooler and drier air this weekend!  Looking forward to fall-like weather and will probably have a bonfire to celebrate!

We had a nice downpour for 15-20 minutes. My Tempest estimates that 0.45 inches of rain fell between midnight and 12:45, almost all of it between 12:10 and 12:30. Some decent lightning as well. Not long lived, but much better than the vanishing storms of the last few weeks.

How wet is the ground out there?  Are you also having an extremely wet summer?

One of the largest nest I've ever seen lol Maybe I'm just not paying attention but wow..

Based on the nest type/shape and location of the opening, I’m guessing that’s a “white-ass hornet”?  Actually called a bald- faced hornet.  Be careful around those things, they can be aggressive and come after you with an army and they aim for your face!  I paid someone to remove a nest a few years ago because I was not going to mess them.

GFS a little warmer for Monday/Tues, starts to bring in some below average temps Wed, lasting for about 5-6 days .

    gfs_T2ma_us_27 (1).png

    Tuesday
Mostly sunny, with a high near 76.
    Tuesday Night
Partly cloudy, with a low around 61.
    Wednesday
Mostly sunny, with a high near 74.

So the cooler temps that were supposed to arrive today/tomorrow are now “a few days away.”  What a surprise….

Breaking: NYC Mayor to announce vaccine mandate for all school staff, without testing alternative. All education dept staff must provide proof of first dose by 9/27. In doing so, NYC joins strictest vaccine mandates for school staff in country.

Despite expecting increasingly hardcore liberalism and government mandates out of NYC, this one really shocked me.  I wonder if they have replacements set up for those who choose to leave their job.  I have to imagine an appreciable percentage will just leave (5-10%?) right at the start of a new school year.  But at least there are plenty of applicants for most jobs right now, and teaching is something you can do with no background training or certifications….oh wait.  Brilliant move.

Yeah, the lows have been so high. Maybe I have a false memory of it...but I felt like stuffy, muggy nights were something I experienced on our vacations down south when I was a kid. Seems like the summers aren't much different up here than they are in the south. Just a blip...or a "new normal?"

It seems like it has either been raining or 85° and super humid.  Night time lows have been oddly high (and humid) as well.  This has turned out to be a remarkably moist summer.

  10. Just got word of massive flooding in Woodhull, NY where we recently did some work.  They are in a big long valley that flows NE into Corning, NY.  I suspect we’ll see it on the news. NYS Rte 417 runs along that valley and has to be damaged in places based on what I heard about Woodhull.

1.55" yesterday and overnight...total of 2.2"  for the system thusfar.

We have been very lucky in the Catskills to be just on the eastern edge of all the rain thus far.  We have not received 0.1” thus far, which is helping to keep our creeks down before the heavy rain hits tonight.

Euro with some significant rain for parts of C/E NY due to tropical moisture streaming north..The western Atlantic ridge will have a lot to say on where the heaviest tropical moisture persist..

I’m hoping it’s not where that map shows it…my back yard.  It has taken us 2 weeks of dry weather for the ground to start to firm up and I’m really hoping we don’t go back to soft summer mud, again…..

1.75 inches in about 2.5 hours after lunch today.

    Still raining.

We ended up with about 2in over about 1.5hrs.  Tiny little cell just sat on us.  Thankfully we are pretty high in the watershed so the end result was mainly entertainment and some roadside ditches that need to be cleaned out.  Our basement gets very wet during most “extreme” wet periods.

Mount Jo is a beautiful hike that is short distance. Ampersand has incredible views but a little more strenuous. Indian pass is really beautiful, although a long hike, rated as moderate difficulty. The Saranac 6 are the ones I'd recommend doing. In terms of the 46 high peaks the easiest by far is Cascade. That is the one most people start on. I've hiked all over and the ADK 46 hikes are some of the hardest I've ever done.

This seems like the winner for our first “vertical” trial hike.  Thanks!

Do you have any suggestions for decent hikes with younger kids?  We have done a few hikes on NW side of the ADKs where it is pretty flat.  They did good with a +/-6mi distance (total out and back).  I’d like to find a hike with a decent view for them, but of course vertical hikes will wear them out much quicker.

Freezing up here in the 30s

38° at my house this morning after 36° yesterday morning.  Saw a little frost on a roof that must be in a prime radiational cooling area.

I’m taking advantage of this nice sunny and cooler weather to replace the last part of my house roof this afternoon, tomorrow, and probably into Saturday.  I also just got Sirius radio set up (Father’s Day gift) for the first time in +/-10 years!  That will make it much more enjoyable!

I'm tempted to take a half day today and chase.  Seems like one of the rare opportunities where all the ingredients are in place.  Feels absolutely perfect this morning too.  Temp of 76 with a dewpoint of 70 at 9am, pure perfect summer morning.  Wish we could carbon copy it for the next 90 days.

I was on one of our jobs for about 1.5hrs this morning.  Like 8:30-10am.  Shirt soaked through, sweat running down my back, and I wasn’t even doing physical labor!  If we had 90 more days of this, our company would call it quits because the crews’ production slows WAY down in this stuff (understandably).  I don’t know how they do outside construction down south….

Erie and Ontario protect us from any real long time drought. When the air cools down and our rainy season starts in fall it cures any drought we may have had in summer. Out west they don't have that luxury. It can be dry there for years on end. That literally is impossible in this forum.

    Never say never….

However, I do agree that it does seem like the “droughts” in my limited snapshot of 35 years here are really just across the span of a season or two.  The idea of a multi-year drought is truly scary, but at least we (humans as a whole) now have the ability to just move to a new area, which seems like it may become necessary for many in the SW.

U.S. Warmest Day of the Year Map

That’s interesting!  I think of July & August as the classic summer months (probably due to the school schedule),  but it does seem that June & July are the really hot months around here.  By August the really hot spells are *generally* shorter in duration and the nights are usually cooling off better, especially by late August.

Anyone allergies worse this year? I am dying this week.

Yeah, I’m hoping this is the peak week for my grass pollen allergies.  I don’t mind being in the office for these couple weeks of late May into June….it gives me a break from the pollen.
