You know, the THV site has always fascinated me. Outside of being a relatively low spot with some minor ridges around that make it conducive to cold air inversions, I think the main driver may be the large quarry and rocky terrain that exists adjacent to it. This lack of vegetation would make for a more arid airmass and allow temps to drop more at night than surrounding locales. This is the same phenomenon witnessed at the Barrens, which is just a few miles outside of State College but believed to be one of, if not THE, coldest micro-climates in the entire state. THV is obviously a much scaled-down version of that but I think that it may be a similar explanation. Food for thought. Shout out to the Eastern CONUS with a rare victory, as Davis, WV came in with the national low of 19. Also, the high was under 100, that being Rio Grande Village, TX at 98. #WinterIsComing

Another day gone and another low of.....you guessed it, 44. I believe that's four nights in a row for me of bottoming out at 44.

I was going off of CTP's summary of all ASOS/AWOS sites that they release twice daily. I believe these are what you would refer to as "first-order" stations, no? Got to love when THV comes in with the coldest official temp in the state, as it did last night with a low of 37. Speaks to the uniquely abnormal nature of that location. #Inversion

Yeah my mom and my wife have a stand booked for an outdoor craft show Saturday and I've been breaking the sobering weather news to them over the course of the last few days.

High here was 66 overnight. Currently 57 with borderline heavy rain. The kids are sick so hoping I can settle in for a nice day of college football watching. Always more relaxing when your team has the week off haha.

Forget what I said earlier, I just went out and checked the manual gauge and I’m actually approaching .9”. Good stuff.

Been using them in my Manhattans lately, glorious. Give me a good rye, go a little light on the vermouth and bitters, throw in a Lux cherry with a wee bit of the syrup, and serve over a single large cube — heaven in a glass.

Morning, all. Low of 56 here. Gonna take the boat out for one last hurrah with the wife this afternoon, then trying to sneak in a mow. Grass has been loving all this dew. Should be a 'beaut of a day. Looks like we see 540s by Sunday, followed by a nice Autumn week, and then 570s by next weekend. Although the 570s would look to have a potent storm attached so the temps wouldn't necessarily reflect the overriding airmass. Anyway, fun times ahead. The seasons, they are a-changin'.

Update: We ended up coming in at 69.2 for the month. The cold was a wee bit more potent than I anticipated. The two-tenths of a degree error is wildly unacceptable and I promise to do better in the future. This board deserves it. The citizens of this Commonwealth deserve it. On a less tongue in cheek note, I wonder if this month is going to be similar to last, in that it starts off with a scorcher of a week and then we slowly knock that back through the rest of the month with the majority of the days being on the cool side. A September repeat? Only the weather gods know for certain.

I thought that might be you I spotted over lunch -- the funny looking guy in a Red Sox hat appearing all confused and befuddled while attempting to bathe in the fountain water.

There really is. So many hidden gems down random side streets. Just a never-ending supply of good food options. Our neighbors were life-long residents of Chicago who just moved to Lancaster last year. They were a great resource for figuring out where to stay and what to do. They specifically mentioned Gene & Georgetti's and boy did that hit the spot. Just one of those old-time small Italian venues that has almost a mob feel. Doesn't look like much on the outside either but man, the food is out of this world. It will cost you a small used vehicle but for a once-a-year type place, it's worth every penny. The type of place where even the busboy was a 50-year-old man, ya know.

Made it back from Chicago in one piece. What a great trip. Evanston was a snoozer, have never seen a town so dead on the night before a home game in the middle of good weather season. But hey, they do calculus better than they do football at Northwestern so I guess that's to be expected. I didn't think Penn State looked good at all but perhaps my view was distorted, and at least the final score looked suitable ha. Chicago, however, did not disappoint. We had a beautiful drive down the Lakeshore highway on Saturday afternoon and then went down to the Riverwalk (only a block from our hotel in the River North District), which was absolutely stunning. Followed that up with a wallet-emptying dinner at the infamous Gene & Georgetti Italian Steakhouse, which was phenomenal. Then hit the bar scene around our hotel for a bit before calling it a night. On Sunday we hit the Riverwalk one last time and snagged some hotdogs and Italian beef from a Portillo's before embarking on the long drive home. Weather was perfect the whole time. The part of Chicago we were in really was beautiful, would highly recommend for a weekend getaway. I think MDT still does those nice easy flights to ORD for anyone interested? Anyway, a great trip with great people. Will definitely not be my last. Oh yeah, a low of 56 last night and no rain while I was gone other than the .03" drizzle fest from last Thursday.
