  1. I measured about 2 inches of compacted snow in Parkville, now all the cold surfaces look glazed. Haven't ventured out, but I've heard cars flying by so I'd imagine roads are just wet which makes sense.
  2. I don't understand some of these replies basically locking in an ice storm 8 days away lol. Would you lock in a snowstorm if it showed that? My take away from the models today is that chances are increasing for at least a light wintry event this weekend and then a bigger storm next week with details completely uncertain. That's the reality.
  3. A lot of regular folks not in the weather field act like weather should be black and white. It's either this or it's that. The reality is that weather is complicated. Things can melt when it's below freezing. Snow can fall but not accumulate. It can snow with temperatures above freezing. Those types of things aren't logical to the basic thinking.
  4. I agree, but if it's raining and the temperature is below freezing it's still considered freezing rain lol. Just because it's not glazing all surfaces doesn't change that. It can snow and not accumulate. That doesn't mean it's not snowing lol. The original reason for my comment was to say that I think some people think freezing rain means literally frozen rain, like ice pellets, which is just not true.
  5. Trying to explain freezing rain to someone that just doesn't get it. They walked outside and said "It's just rain..." I tried explaining that freezing rain is just regular rain that falls into surface temperatures below freezing and creates a glaze of ice on cold surfaces. Then they pointed at a puddle in the street and said it's not frozen. I tried to explain that the pavement stays warmer than surfaces like railings, tree limbs, power lines etc. They went on to argue that if it's not freezing to the street then it's just regular rain. I gave up lol.
  6. DT has what my friend and I like to call Post Traumatic Weather Disorder(PTWD). He allows his emotions regarding bad recent forecasts/storms to blur his view of the future. I think he's very intelligent and can analyze a pattern with the best of them but his personality is very unsettling and impacts the quality of his work. He's also the one guy that will do a big write up about how horrible a pattern is and then 2 days later will post a model showing a big snowfall result lol. He's a mess. Can't follow his craziness.
  7. Sleet in Parkville. Looks like I have about 2 inches of snow/ice packed together. It's raw out there though. Everything is frozen solid.
  8. If I'm being totally honest I'm good with that. The only snow I expected was at the very onset(tonight) and that portion is mostly over. Always expected any frozen precip on Monday to be in the form of sleet or freezing rain and frankly if that winds up being rain instead, that's cool with me because I want nothing to do with ice. This storm was never going to be a big deal regarding snow.
  9. Eeked out an inch before the changeover, right NE of Baltimore. Now it's sleet/freezing rain/rain the rest of the way. Glad we got SOMETHING out of this one though.
  10. Hey everyone. I actually live down a little further south but I had a general ski question. My sister and I live down in Maryland and we were thinking about going skiing soon. We considered this week but it's going to be 50+ degrees all week so we chose to wait for colder conditions. Next week should be 30s/40s. My question is how bad conditions are to ski when temperatures are above freezing and what would be your cutoff temperature for when you don't think it's worth going?
  11. Also, saying 4 months may be generous lol
  12. Can't tell you how much I loathe the fact that we really only get 4 months of the year that CAN provide true winter weather, and a good portion of that time is spent with rain and above average temps. I need to live in a place where at the very least the warm and cold seasons are an even balance.
  13. 1.5 in Parkville, MD! Almost all of it with the final bunch of snow this evening! It was like a grand finale! Puts me up to 10 inches for the winter so far! Woooooo! I'm taking a break from the models until Monday, I'll see y'all then!
  14. I'm with you guys that haven't reached double digits this year. This event puts me around 9 inches. Just northeast of Baltimore city. I think it's ridiculous to rule out February though. I understand early next week is going to suck but beyond that no one knows. How many times has the pattern looked like it was going to be AMAZING 10+ days away and it amounted to nothing? The reverse can, has, and will happen again.
  15. I've had something I've wanted to ask you guys. When we get snow events, where do you go to find the official total like BWI or DCA? Seems like the info is always being shared in here but when I go searching for it, no luck.
  16. 4 as the low here! You think our upcoming torch is frustrating? Chicago is going to go from not even rising above 0 today to nearly 50 with rain on Sunday. If I was a snow lover in Chicago I'd be PISSSSSSED! Lol
  17. God it's already 13 degrees in Parkville. Going to be single digits by 8 PM lol. HRRR looking like it's going to nail the temps tonight!
  18. 18 degrees with a wind chill of 4. Let's TANK! Hoping to wake up to temps near 0 tomorrow
  19. Any chance the HRRR verifies and BWI gets close to 0 degrees tonight? It certainly was right about the massive temp drop with the squall line!
  20. Back to back days walking in heavy, snow globe type stuff. Accumulation is almost non-existent but still fun! I don't believe my temp thing. Says it dropped from 30 to 19 in half an hour lol. Towson.
  21. Yup, North Central Baltimore County getting the hammer! Got those yellows! Anyone up there?
  22. Looks like North Central Baltimore County will be a bullseye!
  23. The only way that torch will be worth it is if a great pattern follows it because we're running out of time lol.
  24. To be totally honest, I wasn't expecting much at all from this, but I enjoyed it a lot. I only got a half an inch but the snow was really heavy and big flakes while it lasted and I got to walk in it a bit. Obviously it's not the goal for winter, but at the end of the day I have to remember to enjoy ANY snow that falls and I did! Now I'll enjoy the cold the next few days before we torch next week.
