  1. Wow as a scientist and this being a weather science board, I am quite alarmed. I really cannot believe there are people that do not understand the Laws of Thermodynamics. It seems they love to believe that the first law does not apply to the burning of fuel. You know the whole, 'energy can be created nor destroyed'. I also do not understand how we can claim we have not had an effect on the environment when our population has literally exploded over the last few centuries. Modern medicine, the green revolution (agriculture not the anti-fossil fuel people), and fossil fuels have allowed humanity to reach amazing heights. Further, do high overnight lows not matter anymore? Yes we didn't set record high temperatures, but July was a very warm month, as was the second half of June. August is still averaging above normal as well. I get that many on this board love winter, as do I, but ignoring the scientific data is just downright alarming. We can see sea levels rising and measure it. We also have not strung together very many below average months this whole decade. We have had a few here and there, but truly nothing like what we have seen for above normal months. Ignore at your own risk, but I choose to let the data stand for itself. The planet overall is warming and the greatest departures from normal have been in the arctic.
  2. The warm water has led some tropical cyanobacteria species to become established in the area. You should look up the stories about the dogs that have died because of it too (none around here yet that I am aware of, but we have seen some of these in the area. Also Vibrio vulnificus was seen in CT, which is usually only seen in warm, salt water. You can read about the case here: https://nypost.com/2019/08/08/connecticut-man-has-leg-amputated-after-contracting-flesh-eating-bacteria/ While my background in vector-borne diseases, I have a colleague studying these more tropical bacteria.
  3. Anyone who has boarded an aircraft this summer shares this same view!
  4. Going to really smell lovely there soon in that case.
  5. I did see many pros calling for a mild winter last year but with above normal snowfall because recently it really has only taken one major storm to put us there. Last year just turned out more wet here, but you did not have to travel very far at all to get above normal snowfall. Looking at the available indicators now, I wouldn’t be surprised to see a very similar winter, but maybe a touch milder.
  6. Was down in the Tampa area for the past few weeks. It was very interesting to see and not typical of Florida. Usually the storms fire up and are gone within the hour. This trip, if you woke up and it was pouring, then it would likely pour for the majority of the day. However, if you drove an hour north or south you could get out of it. The locals were all saying it has been an incredibly wet summer, even more so than usual. We received several flood warnings while we were down there.
  7. It honestly doesn't bother me. Just got back from a week in Florida. Yes you get sweaty, but honestly after a little bit you just forget about it. I know it is an unpopular point of view, but honestly it comes with the season. I love summer and winter. More people (besides on this board) hate the cold and snow. I love the snow and cold!
  8. Just about normal actually. Few degrees warm on the low side and few degrees low on the high side.
  9. I'll be cheering for the Bermuda high to close out the month. Keep the swimming pools and beaches as nice as possible until mid September.
  10. Any chance this private met is JB? Way too many things out on the table to say early start to winter. Arctic has been torched this summer. Who knows if that will cause a lag.
  11. I'm not worried. I wouldn't mind the potential of extending my time down there either.
  12. Just my luck. I'll be on the west coast of Florida from the 8th through the 14th!
  13. JB is always looking for ways to make it cold. Look at his track record with the long range. We are just a few weeks away from him saying 2019-2020 will be he most epic cold and snowy is winter for the east coast. Like clockwork.
  14. I think it definitely has a lot to do with humidity to though, otherwise nobody would want to live or visit Phoenix during the summer. A high of 120 would mean your hotel room would be 100, and I have never experienced that when I visit.
  15. Pretty cool to be in Key Largo Florida and actually be cooler here than at home! We have been enjoying this weekend on the Keys! Hopefully the timing of the cold front doesn't mess with the flights tomorrow.
  16. That was a crazy storm here in Tuckahoe. Definitely had some big pingers off the windows. Very hard for a bit there with the hail and lots of lightning.
  17. Why does the patrol car not have AC? Just show up Reno 911 style. Short shorts.
  18. Well it certainly looks bad. It is basically the same as someone saying, "yeah at some point the heat is going to break and it is jacket time". I mean I have people asking me what the winter is going to look like. I said winter? Did we just skip a season there? I mean it is feeling more and more true that fall and spring aren't defined seasons anymore. Winter just bleeds into spring until you wake up one day and say oh... time for AC. The time between heat going off and AC going on is definitely shrinking. Then in the fall summer bleeds into mid fall. I can't tell you how many "fall" weddings I have gone to in the past few years that have been warmer and more humid than my August 6th wedding date.
  19. So is half the winter over on January 10th? Asking for a friend.
  20. Wow, imagine that. 113 and not in the desert. Pretty sure none of their pools have the metal ladder handles wrapped in heat resistant insulation that you find in and around the Phoenix metro at hotels. Don't want to touch those metal handles! Might have crispy human fingers for lunch.
  21. Good to hear. I only brought it up because they salted so much this winter that I'm seeing quite a bit of stressed trees near roads. I have a colleague that works on freshwater ecosystems and all the salt is really causing problems now. I work with ticks though and sadly salt isn't impacting them.
  22. If there are early colors showing up now it is because the tree is stressed and/or dying. Not a good sign and not one to make you think of fall.
  23. Get a big group to jump in at the same time. Problem solved! Used to love overflowing the pool 'back in the day'.
  24. This weekend makes me really want to move to San Diego. It is epically spectacular outside. Having the windows open all weekend with a strong breeze has been just amazing. Humidity returns soon, but this has been nice. Now if only the pool water would warm up quickly.
