Upstate NY Banter and General Discussion..

Yes she us considered disabled with her diagnoses. It's palliative in that she can never achieve full heart function, and had to have the 3 surgeries to compensate for the malformation. In regards to something WAY off topic here...has anyone looked at the 00z Hi res Euro this morning??? Thursday through Easter looks cold with chances for snow even in the lower elevations...talk about handing the dealer 50 bucks and letting him kick you in the nuts... -

The only place is disagree is Medicaid being specific to the poor. As stated earlier my daughter has it and it's not predicated on my wife and my income but her health condition she will have her whole life. My concern does not come from the lack of people who can get Medicaid, it's the abuse of Medicaid from people who are are rigging the system for all sorts of benefits. I also have my life accident and health license. The long term care policies have changed quite a bit from when I first began where you had to guess the daily amount you wanted to I sure for, say $350 a day. It has since changed to a number of years and a total amount of coverage. What hasn't changed is how costly it is, but if you can use a fixed vehicle specific for premiums you can offset that cost out of pocket. -

I agree with This. When my daughter was first born, as some of my old WIVB bloggers remember, she was in the PICU at strong memorials children's wing for 7 1/2 months. 2 open hearts surgeries, one bowel and stomach surgery, countless x-rays, KUB'S, 24/7 medication...the total bill was a shade over 1.4 million. We had (have) great insurance but what saved us is our daughter received Medicaid right from the get go. That alone saved us probably $50 to 100k in what insurance wouldn't have covered...her condition is why she was eligible for Medicaid not out financial circumstance. So while I do believe insurance for all COULD work it still wasn't enough on its own to save us from what could've been a pretty difficult financial obligation. -

I could not deal with weather conditions like that for the majority of the year. I am thankful for the 4 seasons we receieve, even if it appears winter might be losing its bite. -

Who would have thought our biggest total would be before Thanksgiving?! Then again who'd thought we'd be quarantined to our homes before Easter... -

Nearly blew my neighbors fence down. Snapped two of the posts at the base of their 6 foot fence, actually watched it happen as the squall line blew through...raining so hard coupled with the near 70mph wind gust it almost looked like snow... -

My wife just mentioned to me about 30 minutes ago that one if the day shift CNA'S tested positive today. She was last at the facility on Sunday so they're doing what they can to sanitize even more. I of course am concerned with my wife and children but also for the elderly residents...this could be bad. -

What were truly fighting is not this first wave but the second one to follow. We have to have a plan in place for that inevitably. We cannot just shut down and isolate again 6 months from now. -

I have nothing but vitriol for the New York State Department of health. Late to the party is an understatement. My wife is an MDS coordinator (RN) and has witnessed the worst conditions at her facilities even prior to this pandemic. The state dept is supposed to run checks in the form of what's considered survey of the facility. If the NY State dept of health had any semblance of a clue this facility would be either be faced with thousands of dollars in fines, owners forced to sell it or closed all together...instead they are given the equivalent of a 10 second time out. They are incredibly inept. -

Syrmax I have agreed with your logic for some time on this. There are people only concerned with the actual numbers that are reported but what about the estimated numbers? How many people actually go to the Dr. like BW said when they have flu-like symptoms? I have a fever or chest congestion that knocks me on my ass for days at least once a year and I don't go to my GP. What I find fascinating is that the death rate world wide is more likely about 2.5% if everyone was tested. Plenty of people with no symptoms or very mild symptoms but are positive. I believe as Iceland is reporting makes that case. -

I think the number of cases really skews the ratios of hospitalization and death rate. I've been beating this drum for about a week now and Syrmax brought it up yesterday. -

Does anyone believe there is a number out there that will satisfy the government, state or federal that will allow these restrictions to be lifted or lessened? My reasoning is this. China was reporting little to no new cases for a few days to a week or so and then allowed travelers who were away from home cone back bringing a second but smaller wave. If just travel alone can spark a rise in the viral spread then I fear this will be months of our new normal and lots of unrecoverable job loss. Thoughts? -

4 countries are what's raising that curve...the rest of the countries seem to be handling this rather well. -

I agree with This 100%. In fact im certain there are plenty of domestic cases that have not been tested and people have the virus but not the symptoms...case in point the basketball player who just came out and said he was only tested because he knew he was near someone who had the virus...how many are walking around as carriers with no symptoms? And I f I hear one more argument against the flu having a lower mortality rate in going to lose it. If the flu did not have a vaccine to help prevent the virus it would also have a much higher death rate. Yet people are still dying from that, with a vaccine as well. And that has a nasal swab for every person. This does not. -

While I understand the culture in certain countries and how these rituals have been practiced for centuries...can we move into the 21st century? There are too many examples of the health effects of some of these archaic practices on humans with the spread of disease that otherwise would not happen. For the sake of humanity this should be no longer practiced. -

Wide receivers do not make quarterbacks better. It is and has always been the other way around. Read this morning that Josh Allen had the worst off throw percentage in the league per Bill Barnwell. Diggs doesn't suddenly change that percentage nor his hero ball he likes to play. Josh reminds me if the 1 1/2 year old puppy dog that knows it's bad to piss on the carpet but does it anyway. -

I was a bit pissed yesterday watching the idiots still going to the downtown bars in droves. What that reinforced to me is our selfish and pretentious society. Stay home. This virus does not scare me, but the closures of businesses, schools, restaurants and yes even many of the Vegas casinos now as well does. The faster we get this under control the faster we can get our lives back to normal. -

Try having 3 kids and 2 parents with full time jobs. A lot of people are going to lose jobs over this. And if this gets worse, which is inevitable, schools could be cancelled into May. -

That's the first I've heard of 50 and above...so far I've read 60 and above age group but that is splitting hairs. What you wrote is very alarming on how the virus can be transmitted to others if your asympotmatic or not. -

What is the best comparison is 2009 and the H1N1 virus that mutated and was not prevented from spreading due to its mutation. That seasons flu shot was not effective against it and was not available in the US until that fall some 6 months after the first case. The CDC also listed this as a pandemic as well. It was responsible for over 80000 is deaths and the CDC estimates it might have approached 120k plus. There were a confirmed 60 million cases in the US. I had a co-worker who had that strain and was Ill for about 10 days with the worst symptoms he had ever had. We never budged as a society. We did not panic. We did not isolate. The hysteria in this case is worse than the virus itself. Senior citizens, young children, people with immune disorders, cancer, respiratory ailments etc...have been and will always be the most susceptible to the flu, pneumonia and other viruses. Panicking about this in the manner we have only shows how knee jerk reaction we have become in this world. The economy world wide will see great deficits from this in the short and long term. All because we are trying to stop a virus not all that much different than the viruses before it. -
