December/January 2019/20 Winter Speculation Thread
AMZ8990 replied to AMZ8990's topic in Tennessee Valley
Feels like we’ve been having the same convo the for past 3 winters. Warmth that stretches into January (prime winter climo) and we Never really recover from it. And before we know it February’s almost done and that’s that. Guess I need to plan a trip to Colorado.- 1,666 replies

December/January 2019/20 Winter Speculation Thread

The Day after Tomorrow-Movie would fit this storm well. Looks like some would be in for a crippling ice storm if it verified. The sheer size of the storm is amazing too, 11 states would get the business if it came to fruition, just for numbers sake. Lol- 1,666 replies

Looks like the Euro tried to bring some serious cold deon south into the plains and Midwest next week. Could have implications for us if it verifies.- 1,666 replies

Had some serious thunder and some lighting come thru. Thought it was a tornado coming cause it was so loud, haven’t had that happen to me before. Outside of that nothing to out of the ordinary happened. Definitely some power in a few if those cells though

Yeah, winters definitely aren’t the same for us in the Tennessee valley like they were 20 years ago. It’s sucks to say the least.- 1,666 replies

Figured we could have a separate thread dedicated strictly to December. Should be helpful when looking back on the discussions in the future. Hope everyone is doing well, and I hope we all have a December to remember!

MO/KS/AR/OK 2019-2020 Winter Wonderland Discussion
AMZ8990 replied to JoMo's topic in Central/Western States
Good stuff, guys. Hope y’all can get the full changeover and pick up some snow!! -
@jaxjagman did you see the pictures of multiple big trucks blown over on the Tennessee River Bridge I-40 in Decatur county. Looks like 4 or 5 guys had a rough day, wind gust atop the bridge must of been insane.

I guess it’s a good thing that this system moved through just after sunrise instead of during the night. There’s a few neighborhoods that got hit pretty hard. I Have a friend in Memphis who sent me a picture, his neighbor had a enormous Oak tree fall thru the front of the house. Lots of power outages as well.

Interesting morning in west TN today. Had multiple severe cells come thru, lots of rain and wind. Apparently Memphis had a tornado touch down around the cottonwood apartment complex area.
-
I have a confirmed tornado on the ground 20 miles from my house right now. I’m under a tornado Warning until 1:30. I’ll keep you guys updated
-
Penn state- that’s awesome man. I hope it went well for you guys!! Thanks for the update on the severe side of the spectrum.
-
@jaxjagman- you expecting any severe cells from tropical storm Barry over the next few day?

I used to work in a lot of power plants doing switchgear Maintenance on the circuit breaks throughout the plant. All the turbine floors are usually on the 3rd or 4th floor of the plants. First floor is usually a huge open area that runs just about the whole floor with a large crane running in the rafters to move large items down and up from the other floors, and you’ll have a few other non essential things on the first floor. I share all this to say that most power plants can handle a serious flood better than most would think due to the way they are layed out. They also have tons of extra drainage valves through your the plant that are there to help in the unlikely event that a fire happens and the fire suppression system cuts on. Those drains could also help if you had flooding from the river the plant was on as well. -
That’s about 10 miles north of me.

I’m under a tornado warning as we speak. It’s pretty ominous outside

I’m under a tornado warning until 6:15 in Hardeman County. Apparently one has touched down in the northeastern part of the county. -

I’m under a tornado watch in west tn. The line about to cross the Mississippi River in Memphis looks particularly nasty. Flash flood warnings popping up along the path of the cells in about a 5 county long line from Arkansas into north Mississippi/south west tn. -

This one gives you a little bit better understanding as you can see the levee in the backdrop and how high the water is up onto the levee. -

Here is a partial picture of what my front yard looks like this morning. The pond does not hold water anymore and is empty 10 months a year so that gives you an idea of how much rain we have received here in west tn. -

Hatchie river in my neck off the woods is scheduled to be at 18.5 by Sunday morning. At 19ft the river starts to flood houses along river road in hardeman county. If we get to 19ft it could get ugly for a lot of people on or along the Hatchie River. Stay safe this weekend guys/gals.
