  1. Okay so according to the second key point, there are suites of the GFS run without the GFDL? Why dont we just use those? Or if there aren't, why not make a para GFS that doesn't use GFDL microphysics and run that parallel to the current GFS and we can compare them to each other and give preference to the one that's more accurate?
  2. why dont they fix this cold bias? Isn't this as simple as applying a positive (+) temperature correction to the data? Simply do a study to see what the magnitude of the cold bias is and adjust the model to account for it?
  3. it doesn't seem like there's going to be a whole lot of rain anywhere though (>1")
  4. The GND is very thorough in addressing the many problems we face as a society, from the antiquated land use policy that is driving the current mass extinction to the unhealthy high meat/processed food diet that is driving the high rates of diabetes and obesity and the worst BMI in the world, to the problems of plastic pollution that are ubiquitous worldwide. The IPCC has stated we must cut fossil fuel usage by half by 2030 to avoid irreversible consequences and even that may be too conservative, as the damage we've already caused is expected to stick with us for thousands of years.
  5. Humanity has a horrible history of driving species to extinction throughout their history. What a tragic legacy. https://www.livescience.com/first-human-caused-animal-extinction.html https://www.livescience.com/53822-dodo-birds-were-smart.html https://www.livescience.com/earth-without-people.html#xenforo-comments-3341 They even lied and tried to blame the species themselves for their own extinction by saying they were stupid when they clearly weren't. I liked the last piece the most, how long it will take for the planet to recover from the mess we've caused when humanity finally goes extinct.
  6. I hope they hinder sales in regions vulnerable to wild fires too. How long until we get some legislation preventing people from buying property in these climate vulnerable areas?
  7. a well funded EPA that doesn't employ people who are part of the industries they are supposed to be regulating (we could also say that about the FDA and other regulatory agencies.)
  8. More advanced wind turbines have built in computers that shut down individual units when birds approach. This problem is going to lessen with new tech.
  9. Yes, I never understood the idea that we should bear the responsibilities of what they do, while they also take our money.
  10. what day are they showing this TC reaching us? and the CFS is showing snow coming from this TC?
  11. My favorite was actually the snowstorm in April! That was a historic cold pattern in March and April that year.
  12. Don, do you have any rainfall totals across our area and highest wind speeds? NYC, JFK, LGA, ISP, EWR, etc.?
  13. I'd be more worried about a TC coming up the coast than any possible snow.
  14. What's this talk of a TC coming up the east coast towards the end of the month? I started hearing talk of it today- the GFS shows it?
  15. sounds like the kind of storm we might see a lot of this winter
  16. weird on different precip maps, I've seen western NJ and eastern PA jackpotting and on some I see Long Island jackpotting lol. also how high will the winds be? This wont even be a TS when it gets here and yet I see forecasts of high winds?
  17. you're not aware of the mass extinction we're in right now? One third of all bird species and even 40% of plant species will be extinct by 2100
  18. I always come back to Max Planck..... Planck experienced the truth of his own earlier observation from his struggle with the older views in his younger years: "A new scientific truth does not triumph by convincing its opponents and making them see the light, but rather because its opponents eventually die, and a new generation grows up that is familiar with it."
  19. I thought Colorado was a progressive state but Hickenlooper basically let the cartel run his state and they got away with causing so much property damage from fracking induced earthquakes.
  20. Like you said we may be switching to a pattern of record blocks in different parts of the world. If so, maybe in a few years, we will get this kind of pattern again, even if it has diminishing returns with a warming background state.
  21. I was in high school when that happened, I was more depressed that day than any other day during the 80s.
