JoMo's posts from yesterday, up until the storm hit. The good news is that they had warning-- he heard sirens:
Note: The timestamps are Pacific time, so add 2 hours for local (Central) time.
JoMO, I hope all is OK for you!

timestamps are not pacific....at least on my computer 515ish

death toll has risen to 313

Not sure-- I was just reading from the survey report. Perhaps I misunderstood?
no it clearly says 2.48 miles...another decimal point error? Or is this the same supercell and tornado that moved into AL and will get rated by a seperate office too?
If its not the same tornado then we could have at least 3 EF5's , this one, N al if it is upgraded and I'm assuming the tucs/BHM one too
-
Interesting that the MS EF5 was relatively localized for such an intense event-- the path length was less than 3 mi, and it only damaged a few dozen homes. It must spun up and wound down really fast-- like a microcane that bombs out and then totally falls apart.
Is this the final number though or is this the same one that moved into northern AL?

Back on topic... Did I hear correctly that the Tuscaloosa tornado started in MS, crossed AL, and moved into GA without lifting? If so, wow.
several local on air mets were saying that indeed going by just the storm reports, but it is clear that the storm cycled and a new tornado MAY have formed just east of BHM ..but of course it's possible it could of merged with the old one....
The tornado was warpped in rain and the couplet weakned for a few scans before going nuts again
-
chillax jj...you're way more level headed than this
I;m just stiring the pot and was kidding. I could care less if some tard on a forum calls me stupid...but it's hard to tell intent on a message board
I will delete that

Death toll up to 298
do you have the break down between regions?
i thought the earlier 263 didn't really add up becuase there were "only" 35-45 in the Tucs/BHM tornado(where were all the others)..that was until that report of 147 victims in the Northern AL Tornado

Go to Bing Maps' 'Bird's Eye View' to see excellent 'before' views of what was damaged/destroyed. Some reference points:
Video starts facing east at 35th and Exchange Ave (road next to RR tracks)
:37 - Road crossing the freeway is 31st st
1:00 - Roseland Courts public housing, looks to be about 40% destroyed.
2:30 - 15th St and 5th Ave
2:50 - McFarland Blvd just south of 13th St, the Hobby Lobby strip center where a lot of the evening video was shot of people walking up and down McFarland past the rubble.
Offscreen to the right of this video but easily seen in Bird's Eye View is the mall parking lot where that kid got the dramatic tornado vid:
SE corner of McFarland and 15th, he starts facing west across McFarland, ends facing north across 15th, then heading east.
3:30 - Slabs were industrial buildings between the RR tracks south of University and Kicker.
3:50 - Church at University and 22nd.
4:33 - 4th St between 30th and 31st Ave.
5:05 - Trailer park west of Crescent Ln at 1st.
5:55 - Elm Dr at 44th Ct.
wow..this got deeper(more north) into the city then I thought. Thanks for taking the time to do that

I clearly stated it was for new builds, obviously retrofits impose an undue burden.
I don't think it is an undue infringement on civil liberties to have safe rooms or shelters as part of the new build code.
because its my freaking house that's why. I own it and the ground..I don't need you or the government telling me if a need a freaking safe room in my own house becuase of some freak event. In you are talking about an apartment that you own and rent to other people..then perhaps
..earthqaukes are common in CA and affect a large area...
getting hit by an EF4+ tornado is very very low
This kind of stuff really irritates me...
this is all I am going to say in this thread about this matter....unless we have a spin off thread for it
-
. Every new build in Tornado Alley and Dixie Alley should be mandated as part of the permit with a safe room or underground shelter.
no thanks...if i don't want to build a safe room or shelter in my house then i shouldn't have too....

(15 min ago as of 3:54pm) -- hoping this doesn't confirm...
@myfoxal FOX6 WBRC-TV Our sister station to the north, WAFF, reports 147 people are dead between Franklin County and Hackleburg.
wow thats in the north part of the state too..not the Tucs/BHM monster
-
first air shots from Tucscaloosa
look at thr 1 min mark..I count 12 muilti unit apartment complexes completely destroyed...perhaps student housing or the housing project
http://www.abc3340.c...&autoStart=true
3:28 interesting too.... large slabs only perhaps a commerical area
-
Tuscaloosa hospital treated more than 600 patients, and about 100 had to be admitted.
some off campus housing at the University destroyed, students missing
-
If thats correct, then we are looking at over 70 alone in Tuscaloosa. Not counting what happened as the tornado moved Northeast.
listening to WHNT out of Hunstville, they just said that another 36 found dead in Tuscaloosa not included in the state numbers yet....so maybe it is true afterall
-
The Rosedale area was what was originally mentioned in that report last night that we denounced earlier as being false. Lets hope it is still false.
update
Per twitter, 35 have been found dead in the Rosedale housing project, so far. These ARE NOT included in the Official numbers yet.
<BR clear=all>
-
twitter @tuscaloosa tornado that EMS has reached decimated area east of Rosedale housing projects. "Dozens of bodies" are in the streets and have asked for a cold storage unit from the State.
THIS IS NOT the same request that we heard from for the mobile morgue last night...that was on the GA AL line. Weather channel reporter is in the middle of a debris field...said he could hear moans coming from rubble, with no organized rescue within site. HVY equipment needed for extraction but the area is just too damaged.
-
CNN just showed clear EF5 damage I think...many bare slabs in the air shot
-
Pratt city and pleastant grove look at least EF3..
as i mentioned when it was happening at least it didn't go 2 miles more south..through the heart of BHM
but still...
-
CNN now saying 230+ dead
If true, there is a shot we could over the superoutbreak death toll
-
Whats the difference between EF4 and EF5 damage?
hard to tell the difference at times becuase one can argue a slower moving tornado has more time to sweep the pile of rubble away then the same tornado moving faster
EF4=only a pile of rubble left
EF5= nothing at all
-
listening to various soruces in AL and GA.....
they still haven't got to alot of areas yet..will be looking for people for days
bringing in special search teams
-
CNN/FOX spending most of their time on the Royal wedding with only blips about the tornadoes
-
calls it and EF 4 OR EF 5 just on how it looks (probably right, but him saying that.. )
but in this case it was cleary an F4+ by looking at particle motion and large debris all over being thrown out
-
most of us were watching Spann on ABC but here is CBS stations live report of the Tornado

Devastating tornado strikes Joplin, Missouri

this may be rogers hills chase tour..several have British accents
they drive by the lowes store that got hit afterwards at 1:16
they seem to be driving south of Range line road..much of the area in the beginning of the video got destroyed then(which wold be north of lowes)
