Sweet jesus, this is absolutely ideal and suitable for as much as G5 levels of storming.
Too bad it doesn't get dark until 10pm... conditions usually don't stay quite this good for more than a few hours.
Solar Wind: 700.2
Density: 26.3
Btotal: 38.2 nT
Bz: 37 nT south
Yeah we may be scrambling for leftovers at dusk. I only hope it can hold on. It really doesn't get much better than that. G4 right now.
-
Looks like we have chance tonight with some breaks and a G3 possible.
-
As always this one will be a fight against the clouds here in VT
-
Those are noctilucent clouds for sure.
-
Yeah Kp is 6 and unfortunately clouds. I went out to try and instead ended up with this:
-
A full halo CME is on its way to Earth from a C9 flare last night but it will get here just in time for the clouds to be back.
-
That's why the surprise events are the best... the clouds don't have time to conspire against us.
Yeah unfortunately the KP is down to 3 so I think any chance is done at this point.
-
The magnetic field is definitely still disturbed, and with solar wind velocities way high and a -Bz component, it wouldn't take much to trigger some more storming I don't think. Like eyewall said, though, it's a shot in the dark most of the time.
Yeah it won't happen because skies are clear here tonight.
-
any chances we see something tonight?
We have better sky conditions so I hope so but I would say unlikely. However with that said last night's event was not really forecast either.
-
Nice shots! My phone alerted me but I didn't go out because it was cloudy. Damn, looks like I missed one
-
Back up to a G2 now as per SPWC.
-
I am sure the show would have been far more impressive had the storm peaked after sunset when the Bz was below -20 at one point.
-
What type of camera do you have?
Nikon D300 with a 24-75mm Nikkor lens.
-
Great shots. Seeing the Milky Way is on my list of things to do as well lol
Thank you. The shooting conditions were rough with 30-40 mph wind gusts at times.
-
Here are a few shots. To the naked eye they were a little brighter than the Milky Way at its peak but the color was definitely pretty clear. Obviously with longer exposures you get a brighter image. The clouds moved in shortly after these were shot and that was it for the night.
-
Caught a nice arc tonight but not really and pillars or curtains. The clouds moved in so I am sure it improved after. Will post some shots soon.
-
I agree. The Aurora pic you see as my profile is one I took with a Kp of 6 or so. What are your thoughts on this thing holding for another 3 hours or so? The main issue here is finding enough breaks in the clouds.
-
It was cloudy here overnight so we didn't have a shot. There is a chance this evening but not sure the storm will hold up.
-
I was worried going to bed last night, the radar returns hitting a wall as they headed up here were tell-tale of a bust. Mets and others saying not to worry since it's really not going to be firing up until 06z gave me hope.
At least I can now make it from Thanksgiving until probably February without using my snowblower.
Yeah I am sorry it didn't work out for you down there.
-
Man OKX is getting slaughtered on social media. ALY is having just as big a busy but luckily not many care about that area haha.
Oh yeah NYC snow lovers are a tough crowd when it goes wrong.
-
This is a case where it was too much modelology instead of "looking out the window" last night so forecasters held on too long for the areas that busted..
-
Riding the Euro full steam ahead with this one. It's consistency in bringing big snows into W MA and W CT along with it's solid track record with cold season East Coast storms is hard to ignore.
We'll probably get into a dendrite filled deformation band that slowly rots away during the day tomorrow. While the 30"+ plot that someone posted is probably a bit overdone, a solid 20"+ is a decent bet.
I hope you are right for those of us up here
-
The Euro brings a foot to BTV. I would have to say I am skeptical

The 18 wheeler video amazes me sound wise. It goes from quiet to freight train almost instantaneously.

Yeah that is definitely no good. I will still hold out hope.
