July Heat Wave
lakeeffectkid383 replied to lakeeffectkid383's topic in Upstate New York/Pennsylvania
Dew point has skyrocketed to 72 degrees here from mid 50s earlier today. What a difference when you walk outside now even with temps “only” around 80 now. The air punches you right in the face. Gonna be downright brutal with these dews and temps in mid 90s Thurs/Fri. Over under for BUF heat index on Thurs/Fri set for 102? -

Yep the only question will be tomorrow. NWS forecasting 90. If we only hit 89 it’ll ruin the streak. If we hit 90 no doubt we will bring the streak to 8 after Friday and have a new record. All comes down to tomorrow. Gonna be close. -

BUF does good on a S to SE wind too. down sloping off the Boston hills. Pretty much anything but SW. That’ll kill the temps but really pump up the dews. Really hoping we hit 90 again tomorrow to put the streak at 5, winds are out of the SW and the lake is at a relatively cool 74 degrees (which is 5 above average for the date and only 1 degree shy of the record) so it’s gonna be close. May actually feel worse tomorrow as 90 with a dew of 68 or 70 will feel worse than 94 with a dew of 55-60. -

We’ve been without power since 5pm. Thank god we have a generator. Turned the window A/C on in our room and have both kids sleeping with us. Got up to 77 in the house before I had to kick the generator on about 20 minutes ago and cool it off or there’s no way any of us would be sleeping. It’s brutal when it’s still 80+ degrees at 10pm. -

We’re a lock for Top 10 and at this point I think it would take a hell of a cold shot to get us out of top 5. Next 2 weeks look well above normal with 80s and 90s right through the end of the model runs. after this week we will likely be a +10 or more departure for the month with more mid 90a the rest of the week. -

Airport already at 90 as of noon. Should be on track for 93-94 today as long as a lake breeze doesn’t kick in this afternoon. -

Never have I ever. Definitely one to remember and I really think this is going to be the new number one spot for BUF heatwaves. Think we will see 8 consecutive days beating the old record of 7 consecutive days. -

Well officially a heatwave now at BUF. At least 90 today as we hit 90 at the 4 pm observation. So the streak stands at 3 in a row so far. -

Think Buffalo goes for at least 8+ days of 90 + breaking the record now that we officially hit 90 yesterday and today. -

About as hot of a forecast as your going to see around here for such a long period of time. I can remember a couple times having 90+ 3-4 days but then a cold front usually comes through with some wicked storms and knocks us back into like the low 70s for a couple days and there’s some relief. The duration of this heatwave is going to be what makes this a memorable event. -

I don’t think we’re gonna quite make it to 90 tomorrow but it’s gonna be close. After that I’m gonna go out on a limb and say we see 90 for at least 8-10 days straight which would be a record for most consecutive 90 degrees as well as put us at 11+ 90 degree days on the year which I think would also be a new record. If the GFS is to be believed we could see 90s straight through to around the 17th or so which would be almost 2 weeks of consecutive 90s which would just be mind boggling. -

Yep was just saying today were probably going to see our biggest electric bill ever this month being home and running the central A/C non stop and a 12,000 BTU window AC at night. Not even like we can turn the central air off at night and just run our window A/C or my sons room is a heat box by morning. Some pretty impressive heat coming for sure. -
Upstate NY Banter and General Discussion..
lakeeffectkid383 replied to wolfie09's topic in Upstate New York/Pennsylvania
It’s really not a big deal for places to upgrade their AC systems. They can just use HEPA filters which are readily available and not that expensive. They capture particles down to .0.01 microns in size and Covid-19 particles are approx 0.125 microns in size so its highly effective at filtering out covid 19. On top of that places can easily add UV lights into their ductwork to help kill any particles that somehow make it past the hepa filter which captures 99.99% of particles. Again another thing that really isn’t that expensive to do. I do agree that it’s kind of silly that only those certain businesses are required to upgrade their HVAC systems but other places like restaurants, big box stores, grocers, ect., are not. I think if we do not see a huge long term reduction in cases across the country (where we are back under 20k cases a day nationwide, or with increased testing we drop our National positive percentage rate consistently below 5 % which is the guideline on what is recommenced before a state even considers reopening things, we will continue to have restrictions in place until a vaccine is found and distributed to enough people for it to be effective. This is all if we don’t see surges of cases again with people from states with outbreaks don’t come here and start things going significantly in the wrong direction again, or we don’t see another surge in the fall in which case I can definitely see Cuomo dialing things back again though I don’t ever think we will go full lockdown mode again like we did in March-May. Unfortunately the restrictions are something that’s not going away anytime soon as much as we all want it to, we’re in it for the long haul and we just have to adapt to this temporary new way of life. -

Not sure if anyone here saw it but not looking good for Bills fans wanting to see a game this season. My main thought is if this is true and a New York State law, how would that be fair that we (assuming at least some other states will follow) are not allowed to have fans but other teams are. Seems like quite the unfair advantage and have to wonder if they would have to level the playing field and ban fans across the entire league. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.syracuse.com/buffalo-bills/2020/07/no-fans-will-be-allowed-to-attend-buffalo-bills-games-during-covid.html%3foutputType=amp -
If we can hit 90 Friday and Saturday we could go on a really impressive “heat wave” with temps hitting 90+ for up to 9 or 10 days as it looks like temps will likely be 90+ through 7/12 according to the models. Would be the longest heat wave I can ever remember here.

Upstate NY Banter and General Discussion..

I’m very sorry about your Mom and hope she can be as well, happy, and comfortable as she can possibly be. As for masks being not recommended before and during the beginning of the pandemic. It has already been posted on this forum numerous times that they were discouraging masks for the general public because there was such a shortage of them that even doctors, nurses, and other first responders couldn’t get them and the suggestion that they were not necessary to the general public was to conserve what little supply was available for those workers. It has been shown in many different studies if there is a large compliance (over 50-70%) of masks being worn it greatly can reduce the spread of the virus. I really don’t see what all the fuss about wearing a mask is about in places where social distancing is not possible. It literally takes 1 second to put on and after it’s on for a few minutes it’s almost not even noticeable anymore. If it could save somebodies life isn’t it worth it? Or does it not matter because you might be saving a life for someone you don’t know so it doesn’t effect you? I don’t mean you personally by the way just talking in general lol. -

That positive percentage increase is what’s so concerning considering how many more test are being done. You want to see it staying the same or even dropping as the number of test increase. Florida is up to 15% positive test when at the beginning of the month they were under 5% positive, and this is with the number of test increasing too. For comparison Florida had over 10,000 positive test today out of about 50,000-60,000 test preformed. New York is doing even more test at over 70,000 test daily and only has 500-600 positives daily on average. -

Good now the division won’t be a cake walk. Let’s have some meaningful dueling running QB games this season. Could see some combined QB rush records with Cam and Allen going head to head. Over under at 200 yds combined Allen/Cam per matchup this season? still think we take the Division at 11-5 and Pats get into playoffs now at 10-6. Think we win our home game against them and lose in Foxborough where before I thought we sweep them. -

Nice call, even Jamestown landed up being too far north. Models were awful with this event. Heaviest was between Erie and Pittsburgh. 0.09” here lmao. Not even a lousy 10th of an inch. The dry streak continues! -

FFW in effect from BUF to ROC. Looks like we could see 1-2” on dry ground leading to higher than normal runoff. -

Pretty nasty as that storm ripped through here. I’d say 40-50mph gust and the loudest boom of thunder, immediately almost simultaneously followed by instant huge flash of lightning and power completely out. This was right around 415 and power is still out. I think a tree or power pole must have been struck within a couple hundred yards of here. I peaked my head out and looked all around to see if I could see a tree split or any smoke if a tree/power pole was hit but couldn’t see anything. Hopefully power comes back on soon because it’s mighty muggy out.
