Does 1.99 or 2.00 really matter other than for classification purposes? I don't think the atmosphere is going to say oh, it is only 1.99 so I need to behave differently.

We’re getting some unofficial reports in our newsroom of 2 feet of snow in Michigan City. 19” in New Buffalo.
Anything in South Bend?

6z GFS doesn't look too bad. There is some ice, but nothing gets out of control.

Similar here but not quite as much. GRR is reporting 13" snow depth and a peak of 15" a couple of days ago. 28.6" so far this month at the airport which brings us to less than 9" below normal for the season. Quite the turnaround for a sub 2" December. Even the monthly temperature departures might go negative after today. This has been a great week for the west wind favored LES areas for sure.

SE Ohio heading into WV looks to fare fairly well.

After 25+ inches for the month, GRR is now within 10" of the normal YTD snowfall.

Went from 12 to 1 with a strong south wind. Not often that a S wind brings cold air around here. Cold air wrapping around the lake does weird things at times.

Now to wait for the backside and lake effect..
need to really cash in on this part since the initial phase was lower than expected

Not sure how any of you are measuring snow. Any flake that lands in my yard is melting in Lake Michigan about 30 minutes later with all this wind.

The lack of agreement between the models even this close to an event is surprising.

Fighting virga here. Every once in a while I see some flakes but nothing of substance yet.

GRR says they will issue updated headlines mid afternoon. Any chance of Blizzard warnings?
Knowing GRR I would say probably not

Not to interrupt the Chicago discussion but on the East side of Lake Michigan it is looking pretty good.

Yep. Winter is dead here. Idk if it's a climate shift or what, but there's gotta be a reason we rarely get any storms of 6" or more any longer.
6z GFS says wait a minute, and it may be the kiss of death, but it looks like Central OH might get some snow.

I want a thing with a big blade to brake off packed down snow and ice. Snowblower is kind of useless if you procrastinate and pack the snow down hard by driving over it. With winters lately I’m used to just driving over the snow and waiting for it to melt.
I was not sure it was going to melt before the coming cold so I had to chip it all off manually so that it doesn’t become a skating rink. I somehow injured my rotator cuff shoving the shovel into the ice. Ugh. Maybe should have salted it first to get it softer.
I have a 54" blade but a lot of the time a blower would be much better.

Dtw crew would take the 18z rgem and run. Not as wound up and east.
RGEM and ICON buth have less QPF and even with the RGEM east solution snow totals are much lower in MI.

GRR goes with a watch. Now to see if they can actually go with more than an advisory if this pans out.

HRRR says warm air for the win across all of southern Michigan and Illinois. Not sure how much I believe it but it is a different solution for sure.

Hoping for some sunshine with this bitter cold stretch upcoming. Definitely makes the days more tolerable
You have a much better chance on that side of the lake than I do over here.
January 2024 General Discussion
in Lakes/Ohio Valley

Ended up with the 4th cloudiest January in GRR with only 8% of possible sunshine. It was a snowy month thought with 31.3" erasing at least some of the yearly snowfall deficit. Temps ended up 2.3° warmer than normal. It would have been nice to hold on the the middle of the month weather a little longer.
