I thought about flying into Rapid City, I could have used airline miles but I wanted to do the drive and rental cars were crazy when I checked into them. We are doing it in 3 days or so. I like road trips and have always felt that seeing new stuff along the way is part of the fun.

we were in wyoming for a wedding a few years ago and decided to drive up to yellowstone for a couple of days...we had never been there before and weren't sure how to tackle it...on a whim i downloaded one of those GPS tour apps on my phone and played it through the car speakers and it helped out immensely...i was really skeptical but if you are trying to figure out what to see and do there in limited time i can highly recommend it...

Man.  You guys are going to have a Lot to say when I get my Capitalism Talk out.  I’m a Severe fan of Capitalism, and think ANY HINT of Socialism and Regulation is an Utter disaster, making for a worthless, excuse making, lazy society.  Including the Minimum Wage which is asinine that it exists.  The Free Market in a civilized society fixes everything on its own with zero regulation.  Didn’t realize many on here were fans of socialist “Help” people out by unfairly taking from other people ideals.

I enjoy participating in events that offer great emotions to the fullest, and when I found this forum, I realized that here are my people who understand what I mean and know how I feel when it comes to this kind of adventure. I have been looking for something interesting for a long time because this quarantine has severely restricted my activities. It isn't straightforward for me to participate in something super to energize me, which is the best solution. I searched a lot of sites, but all because of the quarantine postponed everything.

    nice.

let me know if you need my bank account information or need me to wire funds somewhere...

Yeah that sucks for the 76ers... but I think they win tonight.  Probably be bounced next round anyway... Wizards have lost Bertans for the postseason as well.  I expect a 76ers win by 10+ tonight

without embiid they are basically a .500 team so odds are they win 1 of the next 3, especially with 2 of them being at home in a full-capacity arena...they may have a chance next round against the hawks/knicks without him...but no shot whatsoever against nets/bucks...luckily i had prepared myself for this...

It’s funny, a lot of the breweries around here are a little bit bent about Tree House coming in but they are all terrified about talking about it in any type of public forum.  Don’t poke the bear I guess.

Well they are definitely doing something right marketing-wise. I actually do have a friend of a friend here in PA who makes the trip up every so often and purchases thousands of dollars worth  of stuff, some of which eventually finds its way to my beer fridge...

Curiously, when I walked into Glover-Archibald Park yesterday, the background "song" was notably quieter there, and there were fewer carcasses sprinkled on the ground: though to the latter point, they are harder to pick out in a forest's undergrowth than on, say, a concrete sidewalk, so maybe it's just a matter of contrast. The background whirring is frankly louder when walking along Wisconsin Ave than it is when walking the G-A P trail. You'd think with all the trees around, the cicadas would have been flying around like P-51s during Big Week in WWII and a few would have landed on me and done their ritualistic sssslllooowwww doo-wop dance or whatever thing they do. (Evidently the males form choruses.) But that didn't happen at all while I was in the park.

The distant, "whirring" song is more pronounced in certain neighborhoods than others, as is the more immediate "crackling" sound. Still, neither is as loud yet as some of the sleet storms we had this past winter. It's making me miss my dogs. 17 years ago, both our beagles were alive and in the prime of their lives, with the older one trying his damndest to gorge out on the bugs.

Poor little buggers seem doomed, though, when they're belly up. I've tried to turn over a couple. They're 17 years underground and in their literal moment in the sun, they're flat on their back and can't do a damn thing, and I try to help 'em out and move them into the grass so they can get it done. But it's hard to turn them over without hurting them. I get the impression that once they've gone to ground, it's basically game over for them anyhow. Most of the mating occurs in trees, or so I've read.

Thing is, I'm fond of the little guys but they really don't look that much different from roaches, which I absolutely despise and immediately and prejudically exterminate whenever I see them. I was walking with my wife, two cicadas alit on her and she hated that. Eek-eek, and this is someone who doesn't readily go into "eek" mode. Whereas the Flying Cicada Brothers don't bother me at all. If cicadas kept the mosquito population in line, I'd be partial to having them around all season long, every year. But then the novelty would wear off.

No no.. you actually brought up the vaccine hesitancy thing.. I am simply pointing out that I think that a lot of people who arent getting it.. are doing so  because they do not believe in it.  That they think that there is a better route.

At any rate.. guess what!  one of my coworkers is in the hospital for COVID.. young/ healthy.  I dont really buy in to a lot of this stuff.. but I guess sometimes people get severe cases.

yeah I guess they do...jesus tap dancing christ

An associate of mine at the local Sam's club has a co-worker who is permanently paralyzed after the second shot.
Sam's club is offering them $75 to get it, most have refused and continue to wear masks instead.

Sorry to hear that,  has your associates co-worker shared any additional information about what caused them to get paralyzed? Did they have a stroke, spinal cord injury, something else? How do they know it's permanent?

forgot to mention it was a skydiving accident

Best chance is for game one.  Sixers haven’t played a meaningful game in over a week.

and they got smoked in the last real game they played full strength against the heat...all kidding aside i could definitely see the wizards taking one or two

I could see the wiz maybe getting 2 wins, but no more.  they have played well in the past months, but they still make way too many dumb mistakes and play no defense.  They also won't score more than 110 per game either.

as a sixers fan i'm always prepared for things to go as wrong as they possibly can...i do worry that beal could just go off at any time...

According to the US forest service we don't even have this brood x in our region!

    https://www.fs.fed.us/foresthealth/docs/CicadaBroodStaticMap.pdf?fbclid=IwAR1aEazDyNFOUEW8QZxLiBss8Q44V3KfJvOJLtekgekgZPVVXFs7EWnRMHQ

Does anybody have the correct answer about these Cicada's? I mean it's been in the news for months.

the linked map has us in a hatched zone which apparently means multiple broods so i would assume that is both brood II (2013) as well as brood X (2021)...or i guess it could also just mean really big cicadas
