  1. Could be worse. You could be a fan of the Toronto Maple Leafs, a team which hasn't won the Stanley Cup since 1967; the 1966-67 season was the last with the NHL only having 6 teams (the following season the league doubled in size and 5 of the 6 new teams are still in existence: The Blues, the Flyers, the Penguins, the Kings, and the Minnesota North Stars, since relocated to Dallas).
  2. What a way for the Giants to end their season, with a Washington interception. And you'd think Detroit just won the Super Bowl
  3. Hello, Friend! I've skied on the green runs of Canadian Rockies ski slopes, hoping I didn't run into people while doing the snowplow. I was a health hazard.
  4. *Raises hand* I have seen episodes of the Sopranos, both in their original form and the clean-and-sanitized versions that they would show on TNT or Bravo or some channel like that (ie. they took out the swearing), but I've never seen the entire 6 seasons.
  5. There is a vote on a circuit court judge scheduled for noon.
  6. I've more than once seen the other side when it's "Quit snowing already!" because it's April and the first snow was in late September and snow does not fall in big dumps but in a steady stream and people just want Spring to show up.
  7. I may have told this story before, but where I'm from your vehicle is going to have an engine block heater if you want it to function in the winter. As we call it, you plug in your car. That being said, urban/suburban school districts rarely, if ever, closed (still the same way). Forty below? School's open. There was the one day when the overnight low had only been around zero and it came over the radio, "________ County schools are closed due to no buses." It was an urban/rural district and they had all the buses parked in one central lot. Overnight someone(s) hopped the fence and unplugged every bus, and as a result none of them would start. They never caught whoever did it.
  8. Arlington County Schools has also thrown in the towel for both in-person and virtual learning on Tuesday.
  9. Snow showing up near the Wilson Bridge, with the occasional pinger still to be heard.
  10. Once Metro put the buses on the severe snow schedule it was just a matter of time.
  11. Here are the weather stats for the day of the very first official NHL outdoor game, the Heritage Classic in Edmonton in November 2003. (Temps are in Celsius, but as many of you know -18C = Zero F) https://web.archive.org/web/20120305104811/http://www.climate.weatheroffice.gc.ca/climateData/hourlydata_e.html?timeframe=1&Prov=AB&StationID=1865&Year=2003&Month=11&Day=22
  12. Once yours truly and my siblings were old enough and it didn't matter when presents got opened if my dad wasn't already scheduled to work on Christmas he'd find a coworker with young kids who was and do a shift swap. Besides gratitude (the turn-down rate over the years was zero), he got OT pay and a catered meal, and we slept in.
  13. If anyone's awake and unencumbered by cloud cover, the eclipse is well-worth looking at. Even with the light pollution I can see the Seven Sisters without need for binoculars, and for a time they were sitting right next to the moon. Edit: right when it's about to hit 97% a thin band of high clouds is getting ready to obscure it.
  14. Low-level jetstream? (Just guessing)
  15. You're Waterboy, and you're asking us this?
  16. Right around the arena? I don't think there are any hotels with open indoor pools around there. The Hyatt Regency at 400 New Jersey Ave NW on Capitol Hill, a few blocks from Union Station, has an indoor pool that appears to be open, although you should check directly first; or the Homewood Suites by Hilton close to the Navy Yard Metro station might be an option as well. Personally, I'd recommend looking around the Navy Yard area for restaurants that may catch your interest since the area has certainly changed since you were last here. The area directly around Union Station, besides Union Station itself, is pretty sparse for family-friendly options although I'm pretty sure they let kids into the Dubliner. That being said, Metro is a bit of a mess these days, with longer times between trains on all lines due to problems they've discovered with the 7000 series cars.
  17. I simply say I'm allergic to fall. Covers all the various outdoor substances which give me allergy grief.
  18. Happy Canadian Thanksgiving! Yes, this board is named American Weather but today is not a bad day to be thankful. Nor is any other day.
  19. Phonetic punctuation! I did tell him (phrased it differently) and after I explained exactly what I meant he thought it was funny. I'm sure he'll tell at least one person at church today.
  20. Do I or do I not tell my dad he wasn't that great as a tropical system?
  21. I heard it here by the Wilson Bridge; just by the sound I knew it was rolling along from somewhere else.
