  1. Pouring rain, nearing blowing sideways at times, along with T&L near the Wilson Bridge. Edit: Well, that one was close.
  2. St. Louis gets them on occasion, the most memorable in the past decade being the one in April 2011 that hit the airport and tore off a chunk of the main terminal's roof. The Cardinals game had to be put on hold in order to shelter-in-place everyone in Busch Stadium. I witnessed the Edmonton EF4 of 1987.
  3. WUSA9 had someone on the phone from the sheriff's office who said that between the Thurmont incident, which required 3 boats, and all the other calls for water rescues they contacted FCPS and the emergency management department and told them to get the rest of the buses off the roads because the first responders were overtaxed and the last thing they needed was to have to do several more bus rescues, in his words, "of our most precious resources."
  4. Did the job would probably be a better way to put it. There was a massive tree-trimming undertaking in the DC area around a decade ago to prevent power outages from trees and branches falling on overhead power lines, and while things still aren't perfect it did help quite a bit in some outage-prone areas.
  5. Pages upon pages of debating how bad the power outages are going to be in Connecticut...
  6. I'm happy to read everyone got along. We need more of that in the stands at professional sporting events.
  7. Taking a look over at the excitement that is the football game, the NFL needs to speed this stuff up. I could knit a scarf during the breaks in between snaps during one single game and have it finished by the end. (OK, it may be on a larger gauge of needle but speed things up!)
  8. By your estimation, how many backsides are in the seats? I'd have to think it's not an astounding number.
  9. Looked at various restaurants for Alexandria's Restaurant Week and was slightly amused that one place's dinner-for-two list of included items has the following at the bottom:
  10. Henrik Lundqvist has called it a hockey career. Not the way he wanted to end it, but given his heart troubles and age (he's almost 40, which is ancient in hockey years), that's the right move. He and his family plan to stay in the NYC area. One of the best goalies who never had the chance to lift the Stanley Cup.
  11. I'll put this here instead of the hurricane thread, but when when I see Henri I think of the French pronunciation and Henri "Pocket Rocket" Richard and his older brother Maurice "Rocket" Richard. (Ree-chard) Henri always stood in Maurice's shadow as the younger brother during his career but has the distinction of the NHL player to have his name carved the most times on the Stanley Cup. Maurice is the Babe Ruth of hockey but with less vices. Canada held a state funeral for him. (Sorry if I bored anyone about hockey history.) Cicadas are out in full force tonight.
  12. Breezy downpour. Nothing else. (All I've gotten today so far are breezy downpours here and there.)
  13. The first part of the WUSA9 noon weather report was done while an alarm was going off (sounded a lot like your standard fire alarm); it shut off partway through.
  14. It's pouring Hyacinth Buckets here near the Wilson Bridge, where I got around 3 1/2 inches of rain Saturday/Sunday night, rain earlier, and storms during the prior days. (Seriously, it truly is pouring rain and this area couldn't use it)
  15. The lightning was so intense and of such a long duration that it recharged the battery on my deck's solar lights so they ran until dawn. Normally, this time of year they conk out by 2 a.m. I also noticed that for quite a while the lightning was a combination of your standard white along with flashes with a red tinge.
  16. Same happened to me. TV went off, EAS showed up on the DVR, nothing on the devices. That being said, last week the 2 a.m. boil water alert from DC Water, which didn't impact me at all, came through on my devices.
  17. When I saw this while looking for something else I immediately thought of @H2O https://www.portablepress.com/books/dad-jokes-word-search-9781645177333/
  18. Pouring buckets here near the Wilson Bridge.
  19. What a fire sale: Eight players traded by the Nats in the past couple days: Scherzer, Turner, Schwarber, Harrison, Gomes, Hand, Hudson, and Lester, and every trade except the Lester trade was in exchange for prospects. I have a feeling attendance for the rest of the season is going to drop considerably. (BTW, I am aware that a bunch of them are free agents at the end of the season.)
  20. Or maybe it's indicative of something else: The international game gets called differently. For example, the obvious travel that would get a pass from refs here gets whistled down in international competition. Or maybe Team USA has no chemistry. Or the wrong coaching. It's been reported in the news that the players do not like the head coach.
  21. What if someone is playing for the Raptors? Team Canada? You clearly have never watched Olympic hockey when NHL players are involved.
  22. The Orioles are probably wishing they could play the Nationals more often...
  23. I'm from Western Canada, where at some point the prairies turn into lots of trees if you go far enough north, It is true that in the part prairie/part forested provinces fires get caused by things such as hay and peat igniting on their own, things igniting because of lightning, or things igniting because of human stupidity.
  24. Right now there are wildfires in northern Saskatchewan, northern Manitoba, and NW Ontario.
