Nature tends to balance itself. For years we were dry and in a drought. That drought has ended and we have a surplus of rain, but little snow. Soon we will have a surplus of snow and we will have to wait until May for it all to finally melt.

We haven’t been in a drought since the 60s?

    I did ...

I said it last summer/autumn that I thought this winter would be just as disappointing as the last several ...with wind velocity anomalies shredding storm chances and above normal temps with below normal snow fall.

The only problem is, I said it pretty much just like that -  I don't engage in seasonal outlooks in general.

But nothing about this winter surprised me.   I'm just very stoic about it.  I don't give a shit like most.  I like to see big storms but I don't trash my soul when it doesn't happen, or experience psychotropic withdraw symptoms like those that carry on with chart addiction.  It is what it is...

we spring for while.  We'll see what happens in the ides of the month.

Nice one Tip, I of course expected above normal to well above normal temps but it’s very hard to go with +8 to +12 DJFM with November being the coldest month relative to averages

Exactly. Goes to show not only how warm it was, but how unlucky we were.

No one correctly forecasted the warmth especially the further north you go, just months and months of +8 to +12

As long as we have this marine heatwave off Japan and near Indonesia I’d be down on any cold/snowy winter chance here. Hopefully we see that change later this year.

Based on today's pattern you forecasting next winter? This pattern can flip on a dime. Don't bet on it.

    WX/PT

It really can’t when you look at the SSTs globally, North Atlantic and the Maritime.  Nothing is flipping on a dime

yeah, this hasn’t been a great year for skiers in the northeast.

The Catskills have done alright. The Adirondacks have just been out of the storm track and it’s kind of sucked.

The big guys that could blast snow everywhere were OK after Christmas week. If you don’t have the ability to make snow on all terrain, you are just fucked at this point in the northeast.

i’m at Gore right now and they have a nice amount of snow but they have a big warm-up coming and rain this week. Down at the lower levels near Schroon Lake there’s a few inches of snow and 8 inches of lake ice. It is all a very sad state of affairs.

I’ve been at Gore past few days as well, going this morning again

You are in the island. Winter has sucked there for sure this year. But the last week and this week have been great up here. Snow was amazing at Catamount last weekend and in the Catskills. It has been a tough winter but compared to this time last year I’ll take it. Last year many areas never got close to 100% open in snowmaking trails. Has it been an amazing winter no, but at least this past week and this week have been good.

Last year was better for the mountains

You would never know it’s +11.2 if you were out this weekend. Deep winter and biting cold.

    .

Zero below zero days, truly historic warmth.  Almost no big lakes have any ice, Champlain, George, all the Great Lakes.

According to the LGA records show that the Lake also didn’t freeze completely in 1919, 1991, 1995, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2001, 2002, 2012, 2013, 2016, 2018, kinda 2022 (it thawed in February and froze again), and this year.  Which when you look at the trend... it’s obvious
