August was pretty nasty here. I remember a weekday on campus that was pushing 90. Very warm for a town right on the lake, 2 months after the solar maximum.

Honestly feels like climo has pushed normals a few degrees latitude north where our new normal is about Columbus OH climo. So yeah…look for plenty of 40-50 degree temps this winter with any snow we get melting in a day or 2.

Would have been some neat cloud structure with those storms building over the lake if it was day time.  Caught one strike otherwise a bit of a boring night chase.  Watching this next line swinging through but we all know it’s gonna get torn up on approach.

I think the lake shadow is done for the season…Reversed now to a lake hose. Line got reenergized on approach over the warm lake. Nice deluge here with some lightning.

Yes and headed right for us. In fact this evening’s forecast was very poorly handled. At 749 the NWS text read the storms over southern Ontario MAY clip the waters of Lake Ontario…

Yeah, surprised that dropped in. Don’t know if the warm lake has anything to do with it but lake temp in mid 70’s this time of year can lead to some funky weather.

    Awesome spout pics!!!

Monday through Wednesday of next week the base of the longwave
trough will remain centered on the Great Lakes, with several
shortwaves crossing our region. This will support a chance of
showers each day, and possibly a few isolated thunderstorms. In
addition, cyclonic westerly flow and relatively cool temperatures
aloft may support a chance of lake effect rain showers east of the
lakes at times, with the GFS and Canadian GEM most supportive of
this on Monday and Tuesday. A sign of things to come as we head
deeper into the unstable lake season.

Incredible how fast it can flip here. A few days ago I was paddle boarding in Lake Erie with temps near 90 and lake temp in the upper 70’s. Now lake effect rain is in the forecast.

We're extremely close to finishing out this August as the warmest on record in Buffalo.  If it happens, 3 of the warmest on record will have been recorded in just the past 5 years.

Amazing. The warm lake should help keep our temps up the next few days. Currently 77 degrees and still high dew point after the “cold front” passed this afternoon.  With temps ranging from about 75 to 84 here since last midnight we should be in good shape to break the record.

Storms over southern Ontario, shocker. Seems like storms there every time I check the radar over the last week. Let’s see how the lake manages to shred anything here. Also…apologies to Sizzle Cuse but BUF has had quite the run of highest temps in the state lately. 80 right now, highest in the state I think. Interesting how the lake has managed to block all rain/storms here in this recent hot stretch but has done nothing to cool temps at BUF.

Above average, above average, above average....what else is new?

Personally, last summer jumped out to me as one to remember, hottest in my book since the summer of 1989. This summer started the same with scorching June but backed off with cloudy and normal temps in July. But the last 2 weeks and the week ahead are pushing this summer to “memorable” status for me. Just blistering in the sun today. Can’t seem to drop below 80 at BUF until well after midnight these days.  And dropping below 70 at BUF…good luck.

So yeah…above, above, above normal to the point of the local climate just feeling different seems to be where we’re at.  With the exception of the March 15 to April 30 period which will average 45 degrees below normal in perpetuity just as we’re all begging for a change to the 120 day run of temps running between 34 and 48 degrees.

Lot of lightning building rapidly in Lake Erie cells.  Was not expecting that.  Small gust front pushing on center cell but not much else severe really…

Interesting how the SW that was blowing all day here dropped down to nothing tonight as the cold front got closer. About the same time storms started popping on the lake. Wonder if warmer lake temp (up to 75) actually helped the storms pop over the lake tonight or if it’s simply that the lake breeze shut down after sunset. Storming nicely here now…

Yes, but… that ridge showing up next on the models looks stout. Maybe snap right back to serious heat after weekend “cool” down.

  10. Couple pics from the Lake Erie shoreline this afternoon between storms rolling through.  First shot facing southwest down one of the historic slips at Outer Harbor State Park, open lake in background.  Second shot facing southeast at a storm in the distance near the Southtowns.

I also need to make a local plug for the Buffalo Outer Harbor State Park...For those who haven't been there or visited in a while the walking/biking trail is fantastic.  5+ miles right along the shoreline with at least a couple miles surrounded by grassland bordered by native sand dune habitat/cottonwood forest.  Running this afternoon along the lakeshore with tropical dews and storms popping all around was quite delightful.  And for those who like to get in the water...there's a nice 10 foot jump off one of the boat slips into "big" water with no boat traffic around and a handy iron ladder to climb up from the water.

With lake breeze out of the West, we could get some low level rotation along the flanks of that line. Kind of excited for this as its been sunny here last few hours, all the ingredients are there.

Down at the lakeshore now. Looking  pretty ominous down the lake.
