These wildfires in VA are getting bad. Another one in Afton (by I-64 and Rt 250, exit 99) that was started by a vehicle fire on 64. JFC...

i was exaggerating slightly (it's probably more towards early/late winter), but in the urban core (where more than a million of us live) it's not been uncommon to have many days that fail to reach freezing at night. We've had several Januarys as of late at DCA where the avg temp has been at or above 40F. That said, let's hope we get the right confluence of events this winter to actually bring significant snow. Doesn't change the fact that a DC winter is looking more like the winters of Richmond or Raleigh from the turn of the century.

sorry it bothers you that the regional climate is warming significantly. low 50s for highs / mid-upper 30s for lows was a pretty typical mid winter day here for the past few years. Also it's not "early" fall - meteo winter starts in like 2.5 weeks.

yeah we hit 65 - some clouds kinda limited the heating a bit. Looks like we'll get near 80 on Thursday.

Highs in the 70s again. Just continuing the theme of the past many, many months - the cold is fleeting and the warmth is entrenched and long-lasting. We are in a fundamentally different climate in this region compared to the turn of the century (late 90s / early 2000s).

UHI was strong in NW DC this morning - low of 37.6F. Got to about 63 this afternoon, and now 48F. Probably no freezes for the next week at least.

46F at DCA at 11pm - no chance of a freeze tonight. Probably looking at the week of Nov 12 at the earliest.

Doug Hill was my dude when I was a kid (even in the Valley we got WUSA9). Now we probably watch the other Doug the most - although still like Topper.

although the second temps here get back above 60F, the mosquitos will be back. guaranteed.

winter nighttime temps at NYC and LGA are comparable to the Gulf coast.

The heat island around downtown DC is only bested in these parts by Manhattan.

river obviously having a big effect. Although it's roughly the same temp downtown and around capital hill / navy yard. It's interesting, I'm at 36 near the top of the hill in Tenleytown and close to the more commercial areas, meanwhile closer to Mass Ave / Western Ave it's already below freezing.

DCA in the low 40s - not happening. 36.5F in Tenley, we'll probably get below freezing here.

With a high temp of 80F at DCA and temps starting their long fall, I am calling the official death of Summer 2023 as today, Oct 30, 2023. May we transition to many snowy days ahead.
