  1. I seeded a small area where we had a tree taken down last year, about the size of an on deck circle. We had seeded it last fall but it came in weak so it didn't survive the summer very well. I hit it with the dethatcher, raked it up, even added a little loose dirt. This was Saturday, July 31st, figured I'd take advantage of the cool week that was coming up. It came up great, and since its in an area that gets full sun, I even made a shade sail for it out of bamboo and a tarp, to help it survive the heat this past week. It got to about 3/4" tall, then was attacked by some grass eating fungus on Tuesday night. Now there's about 20% of it left, it looks good, except for the large dirt area surrounding it. Oh well, lol. At least it's semi prepped for the next shot, maybe this week. I've found it hard to get grass to grow when temps are 90 and above. I mean it will come up, but survival is another story, at least where full sun is involved.
  2. Yeah we're seeing some of that there heat lightning here as well, but you can still see the stars, for now. Wouldn't mind if that line or the one behind it gave us some rain at least. Got a total of 0.26" the last 2 nights. Not complaining, it cooled things off nicely 2 nights in a row, but we could handle a little more.
  3. Under a severe tstorm warning here, so far starting out like last night, with some pretty gusty winds for the last 10 minutes, and a couple rumbles of thunder. A bit cooler which is very welcome. Just heard an ice cream truck too, lol.
  4. Move it inside, the dewpoint is too high for a cookout, lol.
  5. Getting some action here, pretty windy for the last 10 minutes or so, heavy rain moving in, and just had a lightning bolt about 1/4 mile to the west. Much cooler, refreshing!
  6. 0.32" here this month so far. Glad we have a well!
  7. Lol, and we'll tell them they don't need to bring anything!
  8. My wife had a funny/wild experience before the shower, she was standing on a bench snipping spent flowers off a butterfly bush, and felt something on her shin. She looked down and it was a cicada killer crawling up her leg with a locust. She jumped down and walked briskly away, and the bee was following her for a bit (with the locust) before it gave up. Scary for her but pretty funny too. Like the bee was trying to get on her good side by offering her a locust, lol.
  9. Yep, that's what happened. Did get a shower for a few minutes, about 0.05" of rain, with some thunder in the distance. Had a nice view of a cell building up to the north of here also.
  10. Made me look - there's one about 5 miles south of here, bubbling northward, maybe.
  11. We've had a few of the lantern flies in the last 2 or 3 weeks, not too many, like you said. Only saw a couple in the nymph/hopping stage. 86F here, dp 72. Got unused to this recently, and this is probably the "coolest" day between now and Friday. Whoopee!
  12. Yeah the one I mentioned is about 20 feet tall now too. Beautiful trees, the leaves are the size and shape of pine needles, except they are deciduous. We have a big one in the back, over 100 ft. tall, and the 1st year we were here I thought something was wrong with it when it turned yellow then brown, lol. I mowed that front area in the pics on Saturday, and we have a major crop of cicada killers this year. There has to be 50 to 100 holes on that side where they make their nests. Needless to say I mowed it at a high rate of speed. They were annoyed to say the least. I had done my research and only the females can sting, although they say it's not as bad as a yellowjacket sting. Still, lol.
  13. 0.10" here. Radar looked pretty impressive over your way.
  14. So I've really enjoyed this cooler weather for the last week or so. I was so inspired I decided to put down some grass seed in a small area. I seeded it last Saturday, July 31st. Fuzz started coming up Wednesday night, now I have to keep it cool until this next warm spell passes. I might use some bamboo and frost blanket to give it some shade, going for the Bohemian look. It's the round spot in this pic, we call it the on deck circle. There was a large tree there that we had taken down last year cuz it was dying. Note the 2 foot tall tulip poplar in the foreground that I dug out of the woods the other day. Going for fast growers, the one farther back is a Dawn Redwood that we planted 4 years ago, it was 4.5 ft. tall then.
  15. There were a few with Irene(?) in 2011, I remember at 1 am with the weather channel on and we kept getting the alerts for small tornadoes. But outside of tropical systems (where they're usually small tornadoes anyway) I don't recall a day like that. That was really exceptional I believe.
  16. How are you holding up this weekend with the absence of high heat?
  17. I'll go with the obvious answer - a hurricane, followed by 3 feet of snow on Christmas eve.
  18. Nice - tornado chasing in Northeast Philly probably wasn't on your list! Glad your Grandmother and Mom are okay.
  19. Yes indeed, got a light shower here for about 20 minutes, right after we finished mowing the back, and while cutting up part of a tree (from the storm before Elsa). Now it's just cloudy and quite humid. Radar looking kind of unexciting for now.
  20. Picked up 0.15" of rain from the showers that moved through earlier.
  21. Good for them, as long as it's not too interesting. High and dry here, looking forward to some lower dewpoints tomorrow, maybe we'll be able to cool off in the shade.
