I may be wrong, but isn't a gradient pattern, Caribbean Ridge, compressed flow, etc.....part and parcel of a Nina regime? In other words, tough to get a stemwinder?

This may be wishful thinking on my part, but I wonder if an extended MJO stay in the COD is just what the doctor ordered. Strong forcing seems to have forced jack-shit...in all octants.

Here is my amateurish analysis of what went wrong: On the map below, the wave over Baja was opening up and ready to start its journey eastward, but along comes this bolus of energy diving through the four corners into the open wave. The wave intensifies, closes up, and starts the foot dragging.
