Big bust for Albany?  Seemed like classic spring elevation storm

There was actually about 1-3 inches of snow in the Hudson Valley south of Albany to about the Kingston area. I think what must have happened in Albany is the precip. never came down hard enough to accumulate. However, it was definitely an elevation storm, most of the snow and the biggest totals were in elevated areas.

    NWS Albany on the Kool-Aid.

This won't materialize but it does look like the snow is going to be a little further south than earlier anticipated. May be some decent amounts as temperatures look to be dropping pretty fast  as the snow picks up.

Yeah the run that we had from winters 2002-2003 to 2017-2018 was amazing. Well above average snowfall in 11 of those 16 winters, and only 3 of them were below average. As you said we're due for a period of climo reality. Things tend to average out. I think next winter will really tell the story if we're out of the great snow cycle. It would be hard to argue that we're not out of the snowy cycle if we have a 3rd year in a row of below average, but if we bounce back the snowy cycle will still be intact.

When the average snowfall is figured out by NOAA or the Weather Bureau, it is done in 30 year increments. The 1981-2010 time period averaged, I believe, 25.5 inches in Central Park. It is now time for this to be redone for the new 30 year time period from 1991 to 2020. The new average should be about 29.8 inches. This is quite an increase.

You have to remember that the the open spaces like airports and shorelines are better representations of the actual peak wind gusts than your local neighborhood Davis sensor. Notice how many reports of downed trees there were across the entire area that weren’t near airports or the shoreline. This is telling you that the peak winds in local neighborhoods were realized near the treetop level. So the trees we’re blocking many home sensors from measuring the actual neighborhood peak gusts.

Your absolutely correct. My anemometer is at what the weather bureau wants, 33 feet. However there is nothing I can do about taller structures such as trees, in the neighborhood.

Not sure what to tell you man, every single airport gusted much higher than 41...I'll go with the ASOS over your jerry rigged wind meter lol. ISP gusted to 61, and FRG 51. Your 41 is off. Get a new anemometer.

People don't live at the airport. Look closely at those observations. 90% of the peak wind gusts observations (for each observation period) at the airports were below 50. I believe the only 60 was Islip. Remember my anemometer, which is very accurate, is in a neighborhood like where most people live. The airports receive the highest wind gusts because they are wide open spaces.  By the way, about 1/2 the airports listed did not report wind gusts of 50mph despite the fact that they are in wide open spaces. Another words, if the vantage pro anemometer that I have was located at an airport, I'm sure I would have had a peak gust about 50 or more.

Currently the strongest shear combined with a few hundred j/kg of SBCAPE are moving into Northern NJ with one more wave about to move in. If we are going to see something, this is probably going to be it. Once that passes through in the next hour things should shut off pretty quickly from West to East.

Overall a bit of a disappointment out this way. I know a lot of damage has been reported on the coast so don't want to downplay things but looks like further inland the inversion won out. Things could have been a bit more interesting if the system had tracked a bit further West and we truly got warm sectored.

So far in my area, very similar to recent wind events.

poster on another board in Lindenhurst reported a gust of 62, and frequent gusts to high 50s. Home annenometers are often inaccurate for obvious reasons. Most of Nassau and suffolk gusted 50-60, higher in suffolk.

I went to Jones Beach did not get a gust to 40, I admit I was only there for 15 minutes. I have a vantage pro 2 wireless which is considered pretty accurate. It is 33ft up as to weather bureau specifications. With the wind out of the south I get little obstruction. I believe my 41 mph so far is more in line with most places than 50-60mph.

there is a chart that estimates the wind speed called the Beaufort scale...

    MPH.....comments...

    calm.....smoke rises vertically...

01-03.....wind direction shown by drift of smoke...

04-07.....wind felt on face, leaves rustle, flag stirs...

08-12.....leaves and twigs in constant motion...wind extends light flags...

13-18.....dust, loose papers, and small branches are moved...

19-24.....small trees and leaf begin to sway...wavelets form on inland waters...

25-31.....large branches in motion...whistling telegraph wires...

32-38.....whole trees in motion...walking is hindered...

    39-46.....twigs break off trees...

    47-54.....slight damage to houses...

    55-63.....trees uprooted....much damage to houses...

    64-75.....widespread damage.....

    over 75..violence and destruction...

Yes this has been around a long time. From what I see in my area, the 39-46 fits right in with the 41mph. high gust that I have recorded.

  9. If you don't have an anemometer you really can't  guess what the wind gusts are. I just got back from Jones Beach with a handheld kestrel and the wind was a consisent 25 to 35mph. That was about 7 feet above the ground. Meanwhile back at my house the peak gust is now 41mph and sustained 20mph.

  10. Average speed here 17mph. now gusting to 34mph. Numerous gusts now over 30. This is at my house, anemometer 33 ft high with a non obstructive southern view. Winds are out of the south so I should be getting accurate readings. JFK, like down at the beach, is open with little to obstruct the wind.
