But that's the biggest issue. The thing you have to understand is you live in Chicago. At the end of February I moved from just south of Ann Arbor to here in Charleston, SC so I've experienced this entire pandemic here. I cannot relate to the fear in so many of your posts, simply because no one has ever been that concerned with it down here. Not the media, not the government, so how do you expect a Charlestonian to take this as seriously as someone in Chicago or Detroit? Here it's looked down upon for a man to be wearing a mask, and quite frankly a neighbor told me he won't wear one "because he doesn't like it in the backdoor". I live in a nice neighborhood, all households are well earning & most are educated, and yet most simply do not care about it. We have a mask law in place for the entire metro area, and yet it isn't really followed at all

How is it enforced though? Charleston, SC passed a mask law for the entire county, but ultimately business owners throwing people out is the only way this works. That's why the government IS SO STUPID. They should just pass a national mask law and fine the hell out of businesses if patrons are in there maskless. It's the one thing that boggles my mind, liberals want bigger government & universal healthcare, but then reality hits and you get a guy like Donald Trump in charge of it for at least 4 years Enough of this please stuff. If this is that serious then lets see some serious enforcement instead of all this political grandstanding

Because this thing is becoming less lethal & isn’t much worse than the flu. Our local news did a bit today on how the death rate has not increased at all, and in fact is down from April. Obviously this data doesn’t mean go mask-free, but clearly it’s only killing 10-15 people a day. Similar statistics to the flu quite honestly

Bingo! I think the anti-mask wearers are idiots, and all of these viral videos with angry people are absurd. But shutting things down is just as absurd as being anti-mask. 21% of the workforce in Michigan isn't working. 1 out of every 5 people have no income currently. That is so so so so bad and I don't care if everyone has to walk around with a hockey helmet on as a face shield, you cannot properly exist with that high of an unemployment rate. I have a buddy who is a boat mechanic and his shop was deemed unessential during this pandemic so he had to work nights and sneak boat engines to his shop to work on. The biggest issue with our economy is it's incredibly service based & small business based. Sure you have big corporations & manufacturers, but all of the repairs for all of the stuff we have & most of the purchases we make in this country are done by dealerships and contractors.

This is what you don’t understand though. None of you are wrong about wearing the mask. The issue is the lockdowns were the equivalent of us all being grounded. What it has led to is people just not giving a bleep anymore. The lockdowns were so severe and changed our lives so deeply that it fatigued people. That’s where all these governors failed, they got too strict and now people are just over it. By and large Americans HATE micromanagement more than any population on Earth. That’s why no one is reacting to this right and we’ve got Karen’s flipping out at Kroger because they can’t enter without a mask

One thing to consider as well are the legal ramifications. Our governor here in SC and attorney general said they cannot impose any legal mask law and will not shut anything down again because of potential lawsuits. I believe the state of Ohio is being sued by all of the daycares in the state for their laws and the belief is that the daycares will win. You all have to realize by closing anything you are declaring people's work illegal. That sets up an interesting legal battle that could result in the states losing millions

Unabridged capitalism always works. It’s why we have an economy worth $21.5 Trillion, 25% of the entire world’s economy with 5% of its population. There’s really no safety net for small businesses as you have to have outputs, and that’s what is going wrong here. I know this is a left leaning forum but I can’t deny the education I’ve gotten since earning a business degree in college, it’s staggering to see the raw efficiency in our country as opposed to Europe. But living in wide open Charleston I’m gonna tell you by and large no one cares about this pandemic. Just tons of vacationers are flocking these states, crowding places and taking a vacation from wearing a mask. I’m interested to see if a national law would work, it’d help us out down here a lot.

The argument isn’t that it’s bad, it’s that is it worth the cost? How do you explain total shutdowns to someone like my mom who had to fire almost everyone at her hotel in Vegas. Foreclosures are shooting up to an insane amount which is going to drive up crime as well. Is it worth going to extreme measures to prevent what is mostly elderly death. I don’t have the answer but it’s not as cut and dry as Stebo thinks. Sorry man but meteorologists aren’t getting laid off in this and you should understand that

All good points. Ultimately time will tell but economically you’ve got states like Michigan with an unemployment rate of 21% & Southern states down to around 10%. It’s an awful dilemma to be in, do you risk mass spread or risk firing employees. Just have to feel for people losing loved ones and losing their incomes. A disaster on all fronts for sure

I think we need a national law mandating them indoors. Actually was sitting by a family from Wisconsin & Virginia yesterday when we docked up at this place on the water just west of Columbia. They came down here specifically because of the lack of restrictions and the water. I think this is what you’re seeing in a lot of Southern states, flocks of people flooding for vacations because they can go out to eat and do activities without the Northern restrictions. I’d say the majority of plates I saw on the road were out of state and our traffic map currently is terrible. Extremely long backups of up to an hour to get to the beach

So many out of state plates here. Seems like everyone is taking their vacations down here and that combined with the locals not being very precautious from the start has led to a wildfire of spread. Heck it seems like the whole state of Tennessee and New Jersey is here currently, many rentals are all booked up

Well typically mutations result in a weaker virus. This is exactly what happened with the Spanish Flu, it just mutated out. I believe it was a form of bird flu that just ran rampant through the world, and then it almost shut off like the faucet in your sink and died out. I remember in college reading about this in a history class and was blown away at how it just quit. It's eerie how similar we're reacting to this 100 years later, thankfully though this is a much more mild virus than that one. The 1918 flu caused a massive spike in your immune system which was bad for older people, but really bad for teenagers and young adults because their body would fight it too hard, and wear the organs out leading to their death.
