  1. Very nasty sleet too IIRC. There were two such sleet storms that year, one on Valentine's, a real disappointment but it was modeled to do so for the city; other areas got dumped on.
  2. The borders make no sense; we are very close to NYC and we are officially in Mt Holly's forecast region. Hop on the train in Metuchen to either city and see which one is faster....
  3. Never gets old. We see run to run madness here already. Truth is we really don't know all the time until it gets going; if it starts pinging early, we know to give up on it. I'm at sea level and not far from Raritan Bay, and while people here don't think we are coastal, we are close enough. That said, Staten Island across the river often has spots that do better; not sure why. And parts of Monmouth; not sure if that bit of elevation in some parts makes the difference.
  4. Been reading about "screams potential" stuff here for years; it rarely pays off. Take it one week at a time, one storm at a time. We had a strange run in the 2000's, unlike any I saw as a kid or even in early adulthood. This is more like it, winters were colder and less snowy. That said, there weren't a ton of sleet events either, It snowed or it rained. Usually got a good snow ( 4-6 ) once or twice a season. So far we have fallen short here this year, but its been a dry year all around. We'll see.
  5. I wouldn't mind some decent rain, but we can't even manage that. I need my sump pump pipe to thaw out..
  6. And there you have it; just what I was expecting based on years living in the area. I think they are correct. And, lousy driving conditions. Stay home. In fact, lousy walking conditions. Don't wanna break a hip.
  7. I'm a tad south of you, and these setups aren't usually good. Frankly i do better when it starts as heavy snow then transitions to rain; if there is a warm nose the sleet takes over pretty fast and we get a lot of sleet. None of these systems have packed a lot of moisture for some of us this year, so we may be looking at an inch give or take of mostly sleet. Which I'd rather not even have. I find it more treacherous than plain snow.
  8. The subsidence zone will always be the border of Middlesex and Union counties, right around Colonia/Rahway. Book it. Seen it so many times people think I'm lying; have had 3 inches when New Brunswick had a foot...
  9. With my youngest starting a new job next week and having to drive on 287 I will be content to see every one of these events miss. New job said they only close for extreme weather....which in a lot of workplaces means only if the state orders nonessential workers to stay home....dear old dad would be pressed into service with the SUV, and I'd rather be doing something else......perspective does change over time...
  10. Are a lot of kids bussed? that matters. Bus slides, kids get hurt, driver gets hurt, district is gonna pay. 31 years in public schools here. Parents bring lawyers to schools now. That is no bullshit. Sat across from them a lot.
  11. If even one kid slips on a school sidewalk, the town is gonna pay. ALL the walkways have to be cleared; crews will be up way before school starts to do that. Same goes for the staff; they slip in the parking lot, the district is gonna pay. Days can be made up in the spring.
  12. We are well beyond "could be."
  13. I'm sure there's a 25 year old Rutgers grad who can do it....wait a sec....
  14. Why not. Could be warm enough soon.
  15. Any thoughts on the crisis at NOAA and how this will affect forecasts?
  16. it does indeed. many thanks.
  17. Indeed, we had an impressive blizzard in Jan, dumped a ton of snow on Cape Cod and a foot or more elsewhere in the region. The good ole days.....
