  1. Its looking like this Aug. will rank somewhere between 2nd and 4th coldest at BWI. I was surprised to find that there was actually one time at BWI where Sept. was hotter than Aug. (1921) and one time where they were equal (1881). I mention this because I wonder if it will happen this year with the way the longer range forecasts are looking. Although in both the previous cases, it wasn't because Aug. was so cold (like this year) but rather because Sept. was so hot. 1881 was the hottest Sept. ever and 1921 was the 4th hottest.
  2. BWI has not had a single above average day this month yet. Coldest August on record watch (currently in 4th place).
  3. 6.14 inches of rain for BWI so far, making it the 2nd rainiest day so far. Previous 2nd place holder was 9/30/2010 with 6.02 inches. The all time recordholder is 7.62 inches on 8/23/1933
  4. I'm all in for tracking cold records on my webpage now (never thought I'd be saying that in this region). I think we're going negative for August so a top 10 coldest year is still alive...
  5. Interesting is the disparity in temps between BWI and DCA this year. Normal (1981-2010) for calendar year is 55.1 at BWI and 58.2 at DCA, so BWI on average has been about 3.1 degrees colder. Top five years are below. 1981 - 4.4 degrees colder at BWI 2014 (so far) - 4.3 1980 - 4.2 1959 - 4.2 1973 - 3.6 So its a very good chance that this will end up being the year where the average temps at BWI and DCA were the farthest apart ever.
  6. It seems like we were in a historically warm pattern (with occasional negative departures) from March 2010 to January 2013. Starting in Feb 2013 its been the other way around. I have no idea why though. It doesn't seem like its stopping anytime soon either.
  7. July 2014 at BWI broke or tied more record lows than any other July (5 total), but still only finished tied for 17th coldest (along with 1904 and 2003). By comparison, the other recent cool July everyone remembers (2009), finished tied for 10th coldest, but only broke one record low. The period from Jan-July 2014 was tied for the 10th coldest Jan-Jul period ever at BWI, along with 1888 and 1912.
  8. Same here- such a cool July and yet it still managed to burn up my lawn. I think BWI is gonna break another record low tomorrow morning. Forecasted low is 56, which is also the record for tomorrow.
  9. BWI tied the record low this morning (59 degrees). 4th time this month now that a record low was either broken or tied.
  10. BWI set its 3rd record low for the month this morning (57 degrees). Previous record was 59, set in 2008.
  11. BWI set a record low last night of 57. Previous record was 58, set in 1976.
  12. Somehow, the first half of the calendar year at BWI was the 13th coldest on record. Also a record low was tied on the 5th. I think July might go negative so we might still be in the running for top ten coldest year. It certainly doesn't feel like a cold year though.
  13. If we can keep it through midnight tonight, we have a record highest minimum broken today at BWI. Record is 75 and the low was 76 this morning.
  14. Record high watch for BWI for Wed, Jun. 18. The record is 97, LWX currently forecasting high of 96.
  15. Somehow, despite May finishing 2 degrees above average, the Jan-May period this year was the 9th coldest Jan-May period ever at BWI.
  16. Record lowest max set at BWI yesterday (57 degrees). The previous record was 58, set in 1996.
  17. If he's using the 1981-2010 normals he's wrong. April-July 2003 were all below normal. Edit: Also those 4 months were below normal even using the normals at the time.
  18. Quite an extreme April for BWI... yesterday's rainfall of 3.06 inches tied the previous daily record set in 1947. This was the 2nd wettest April ever with 8.6 inches total (record is 8.7 inches set in 1889). The period from Jan-Apr was tied for 5th coldest Jan-Apr period ever (38.0 degrees). Time to issue a top 10 coldest year on record watch?
  19. Just missed the record rainfall and record low- 2.42 in. vs 2.52 needed, and 31 degrees vs 30 needed. Trace of snow fell on the 15th instead of the 16th, so that wasn't broken either (unless they record a Trace for today, but I'm not sure)
  20. Also BWI is closing in on the daily rainfall record... 2.52 is the record, 2.14 has fallen so far.
  21. BWI did indeed tie it. Next up is a record low watch overnight tonight- need to reach 30 degrees or lower. Also for tomorrow we could possibly tie the record daily snowfall (a Trace), which last occurred in 1988.
  22. It looks like BWI will tie the record high minimum for today of 62 degrees unless something happens before midnight (which is doubtful). This will be the 5th consecutive April where BWI has either broken or tied at least one high or high minimum record. If we finish April above average, this will be the 7th consecutive April with above-average temperatures for the month overall.
  23. BWI had the 11th coldest March and tied for 6th coldest Jan.-Mar. period ever (if rounded to nearest tenth of a degree). Rodney, how did Jan.-Mar. rank at IAD in terms of cold? Curious to see if it made the top 10 as well.
  24. Lowest max was indeed broken- 36 degrees, replacing previous record of 38. Record low was tied overnight at 20 degrees.
  25. Record lowest max watch today and record low watch tonight at BWI. Top 10 coldest March and top 10 coldest Jan.-Mar. period watch too.
