Heavy Ice here in Surl.  SE person county.

If you look at the woods across the street you can see a good example of a marginal temp ice event with a warm ground.  Almost a straight horizontal line between the iced branches and the no ice branches close to the ground.

I can't remember any to be honest.  Usually when Roanoke is faced with an icy situation, it's primarily sleet.  Aside from the freezing rain we received in December, it hasn't occurred often in my mind.  Normally Floyd is the place that gets hammered by icy events.

For that NAM run, Radford seems to be on the fringe.  Out of sheer curiosity, I have an urge to travel to Floyd, Poor Mountain, Bent Mountain, or Rocky mount to see what a true freezing rain event looks like.

I taught in Floyd County from 74-79.  I got to enjoy several awesome winters there.  You are correct in saying Floyd tends to do well in winter weather situations.  In January of 77 we came back from the Christmas holidays and went to school one day and that was it for January. Every time it seemed as if we might go back to school we would get hit again. Awesome times.

Well damn.  Just as I was about to release my life’s work. “73 Years of Weather, Which Storms I Liked and Which Storms I Hated”

Now what am I supposed to do with 784 pre-prepared posts?

Just to give you an idea of what you missed this was the first snowstorm I went through.  I was only a little over one month old but it was just the first of many.  NYC December, 1947.  I destroyed the posts so as not to be tempted to disrupt the thread. Now, to paraphrase Paul Harvey, you won’t know, the rest of the story.

Bring the mojo! Now before this thread gets into full swing I hope we can spare everyone the discussion about how much each poster does or doesn't want an ice storm... the weather doesn't care whether you want it or not and honestly neither does the forum

The signal is there for cold and shots at snow, why is everyone cliff diving? Of course the models aren’t going to be consistent. They’re missing half their data.

This is true. If they had all the data they would be inconsistent in a completely different way.

Scrolling back in time there have been many threads started with the word threat or threats in them so I'm not the lone ranger, just saying!

True enough. How did most of them turn out?  You probably should have scrolled back before you titled the thread. It just reinforces that old saying, “those who don’t remember history, are doomed to repeat it”.

What has happened to this world?  :guitar:

The main problem here is you. Why did you title the thread the way you did?  Snow THREAT?  On Christmas Eve everyone says Santa is coming tonight. Sure enough he shows.  We don’t say there is a Santa Threat. If we did the old SOB wouldn’t show up either.

I actually think it’s my pilot igniter assembly. I’ve purged per directions and can hear/smell gas while trying to light it and will occasionally get a spark but it’s not consistent in doing so.  Just need to bite the bullet and have them come service them as it does give us back up heat if we lose power or the heat pump stops working like the other week (dang fuse I didn’t even know existed on the handler unit popped).

Can you get it to light at all?  In other words, can you get it to light while your pushing the pilot knob in but it goes out when you let it go?  If it does that get some steel wool and clean the tip of the thermocouple.  Thats the thing that looks like the end of a knitting needle pointing straight up that is in the pilot flame when it is lit.  It eventually gets coated with enough carbon that it insulates the thermocouple and it doesn’t get hot enough to open the gas valve.  I have to clean mine every couple of years.

Oh how I miss NJ. I never thought I would say since I left in 1999.  But storms like these make me miss it and makes it all worth it.  I grew up and lived right below the first 2 under Sussex.

I totally agree.  I grew up in West Milford, NJ way back in the 50s and 60s and several good Nor’easters each year was the norm.

Enjoy your low to mid 30s.

You can look at radar tell by the angle and trajectory. It's not going to happen south of the VA border. Too much WAA with this setup.

    Sorry.

Where ever you are expect your temps to creap up. 35-40.

Enjoy that tonight. Sorry. This time tomorrow you will be asking "what snow"

Take this trolling crap to the whining thread or tomorrow morning we will be asking “where’s FLweather”.

  11. I love being on a science based weather board. Where else could I learn that the snow that has started in Western NC is ripping, pouring, puking and hammering.  I don’t know if I should prepare by getting out a sewing machine a big glass, a vomit bowl or some nails.
