To your point, LWX has suddenly and retroactively changed their tune (though not necessarily in the PM disco update): I appreciate your observation...and honestly, your personal inputs here over the years. And please believe, I defend your profession more than you know....I only approach this from a hobbyist standpoint, but twice already this afternoon, I've had two neighbors ping me -- "yo, man...IT WASN'T SUPPOSED TO RAIN THIS AFTERNOON, WTF??" I got nuthin. Who knows...maybe we may have a microclimate thing going on here? This is anecdotal, but I'd say we've had exactly this kind of "blow-up" very localized shower/storm over the Hayfield/Kingstowne/Franconia area several times over the past two years, where almost no other locales in the close-in-NoVA burbs had nothing. And it's like it blows up...and rains/storms like hell...and then dissipates very quickly. That happened this afternoon, and at least a few times over the past two years. I (along with a couple neighbors) were astounded when the sky opened up about two hours ago. It didn't even LOOK that showery/stormy if you looked to the west/NW (unless you looked at radar) but boy-howdy...did we get a good gully-washer for about an hour.

Welp, planned to mow the front lawn early-mid afternoon, started getting Rain Alarm alerts almost an hour ago. I scoffed at them...because I sometimes get false-positives from that particular app (e.g., fog, low lying clouds, etc.) plus, it's supposed to be gorgeous this afternoon, and has been all morning and (up until) the past hour: Get about two passes in on the front lawn...and the sky opens up, heavy downpour, can't hardly see across the street. That started about 40 min ago. Call me a cynic, but I didn't see this reflected above, nor in the morning disco, at least not for close-in NoVA burbs: These are the kind of whiffs in forecasting that really piss me off. Can I mow tomorrow, or early next week? Yeah, I can likely fit it in with all of the other life crap. But c'mon...can we get at least a bit more of a heads-up in the disco (which is usually what *I* pay attention to)?? Yeah, precip might not happen (and THAT'S usually in hard winter around here)...but this is annoying. Ironically, we had a small picnic planned for our back patio/yard for midday today but had to cancel last-minute...thank God we did, or it would've been one helluva fire drill. P.S. -- it's STILL raining almost an hour later.

It's finally above freezing, high 30s I think for most of the day...don't know the exact temp/DP. IDGAF. Some of the intractable snow piles are finally melting. For those of you who prefer weeks of northern Minnesota-ish winter weather, I wish you the best. I enjoy occasional, light/enjoyable snows here in NoVA, yes....but weeks of near-zero nighttime lows and streets/sidewalks still caked with white concrete and worrying about pipes freezing on a nightly basis and letting faucets drip... yeah, HARD NO. Over it. Looking forward to moderating temps over the next several days.

21 / -3. Dear God, I'm tired of deep winter. I could even live with the temps if the damn sun would just appear once in awhile.
-
Snapped this an hour ago...currently, outside temp down to 21, DP still, well, ZERO. I never remember seeing that kind of DP reading ever in my life. It was actually -1 last hour, I just didn't grab my phone quickly enough to capture it. Wowzers.

So, yeah, enjoy the tech discussion. How about some (what I'm sure are) gorgeous pics of your home draped in some fresh snow?? -

I'd be inclined to agree with you on this assessment, given that we got an eventual .6" here within the last hour (vs. the 1-3" predicted 24 hours ago). But while I like to LOOK at the snow, I don't like to clean it up anymore...so I'm good. -

Yeah. We probably got .5" here, but again, we didn't lose a whole lot of snowpack considering the earlier warmer temps/rain. And we got another week of hard winter incoming, so.... -

Looks on radar like you're about to get, or in process of getting, spanked, @CAPE... -

35/31, heavy sleet. This is likely not "our" storm S/E of the 495 mixing bowl, but it rarely is these days. Again...can't bitch at all, cuz we made out well last weekend with an 8-9" snowfall. -

35/31. Had heavy drizzle for past 2 hours, but just had a rapid switchover to sleet/rain mix. -

35/31. Plain ole rain. -
Admittedly, one of my favorite things this time of the year, is to see @yoda and @nj2va snipe at each other from their respective hockey corners...

Honestly ready for some swaying palm trees...after putting up with this white concrete shit for a week plus here in the (typically) winter pampas of SoFfxCo. -

Regardless...we can't bitch that we didn't have a few weeks of deep effing winter in 2024-25. I'll enjoy a fresh coating of white tomorrow...which will be locked in as concrete for most of the coming week. Hate that part of it, but I know plenty here enjoy it. Currently, 41/31. -
I like the profile pic change, @stormtracker. As the dude responsible for social media at my small org, I struggle to come up with new and exciting ways to engage folks on MLK's birthday on those platforms. Biggest challenge at times is to find/utilize a pic of the man that hasn't been OVER-used before...so, semi-stealing your pic to squirrel away for next year's posts.

Holy CRAP. Those are life-ending icicles right there. I'm noticing a fair amount of spouting ice-damming on our rear addition, which (unfortunately) receives little morning or afternoon sun from early Dec through late Feb. But we're certainly not dealing with THIS level of ice build-up nor any leaking. Seriously...do y'all have hard hats if you go out on that back deck to clean up??

Moderate SN, 29. Should be a nice refresher coat by sunrise.

It sucked shoveling that snow off of a driveway about half that size, both back in 2009 and this past Monday...primarily because I'm 15 years older than you. (My wife also gets that same look, post shoveling!) In fairness, neighbor few doors away did bring his snowblower by on Monday to help. -

Really pulling for y'all in this sub for this coming weekend...I know this past Monday didn't turn out quite as expected. -
Love seeing WxStar & IntelliStar jogging together...I was doing that earlier in the week.

Telegraph Road is one of the few major roads in our parts that has been properly plowed, and then only minimally...roads in our subdivision got their first (single!) pass late yesterday, IF that, but at that point they were barely scraping the top layer of multiple layers of compacted snow/ice set in place Mon nite. I'm the first one to honk if FCPS closes for the threat of a flurry, but this is the worst I've ever seen the roads around Hayfield post-snowstorm...I'll be legit shocked if FCPS doesn't close tomorrow as well.

Low of 21, winds picking up. No plows yet here, but someone was obviously doing donuts in the cul de sac...
