    Up to 85 / 64 plenty of mid / upper 80s today. We'll see if anyone can touch 90. Showers/storms (clouds) tomorrow but still warm. Dries out Fri (5/24) and much of Sat (5/25). Still a bit iffy on timing of showers and rain chances this 3 day weekend between late Sat - Sun (5/26) and/or later Sun and Memorial day (5/27). Beyond there 5/28 - 5/30 trough into the east and overall near normal with brief warmup 5/31 with trough to open next month and a cooler first 5 days looking longer range. Beyond there height rise towards the 6th / warmer.

Tornadoes struck the cities of Louisville, KY, Cincinnati, OH, Chillicothe, OH, and Marietta, OH, causing a million dollars damage. (Sandra and TI Richard Sanders - 1987) 1949: A violent tornado crossed the Mississippi River from the St. Louis area into Wood River, then to Roxanna. This tornado damaged or destroyed 300 homes in these two towns, killing five people. Four people died in a destroyed restaurant in Palestine, Illinois; one body was recovered from a tree. A tornado causing estimated F4 damage killed five people and injured 55 in St. Louis and St. Charles counties in Missouri and Madison County in Illinois. This tornado was part of an outbreak that produced four different tornadoes and was responsible for five deaths and 57 injuries. 1980 - The temperature at Williston ND reached 102 degrees to set a record for May, and the next day the mercury hit 106 degrees. (The Weather Channel) 1987 - Severe thunderstorms, developing along a sharp cold front crossing the central U.S., produced 60 mph winds and golf ball size hail at Sedalia, MO, and drenched Hagerstown, IN, with six inches of rain in one hour. Temperatures soared into the 90s ahead of the cold front. Paducah, KY, hit 94 degrees for the second day in a row. Light snow blanketed Montana, with three inches reported at Butte. Thunderstorms also produced five inches of rain in two hours at Lake Charles, causing local flooding. Thunderstorms produced up to five inches of rain in Macon County GA, and heavy rains left nearly eight feet of water over roads near Stepstone KY. (The National Weather Summary) (Storm Data) 2001: Golfers participating in a golf tournament at the Majestic Golf Course in Hartland, Michigan received an urgent message on the G.P.S. on their carts. The message, relayed from the clubhouse, was that a tornado was bearing down on the course. Most of the golfers made it to safety in the clubhouse, although some had to take shelter on the course. Only one golfer suffered a minor injury. The F2 tornado damaged 70 cars in the parking lot along with numerous golf carts and a pontoon boat.

Warmup with above to much above normal under way , should get to mid - upper 80s (perhaps to 90 in the warmer spots (Wed/Thu) the next 4 days Tue ( 5/21) - Fri (5/24). Some rain chances with front later Thu / Fri. Clouds could get in the way of more 80s Sat and Sun before a wetter Memorial day this weekend. We'll see how the front evolves and if the drier or wtter forecasts evolve. A tendency for old fashioned troughs to close May and open the first 4 days of the next month before heights rise into the east. Overall near normal temps and rain in the period.

    65 and some low clouds angled NE - SE on a strong E/NE flow. SKies clear by noon for all. A very nice day mid 70s to near 80 in the warmer spots. Overall dry and warm week. Step up to the 80s Tue (5/21) - Fri (5/24), peaking Wed and Thu with upper 80s to near 90 in the warmer locations as 850 MB temperatures peak near 16 - 19C. Front comes through later Thu evening with the next shot at rain/storms before clearing and generally remaining war on Fri. The coming long Memorial Day weekend looks split with a warmer / drier Fri - Sat with the onshore flow returning Sun (5/26) with clouds and cooler and perhaps a cooler, wetter Memorial Day (5/27). Beyond there near normal overall to open next mont with trough pulling of of the east and heights rising towards the 3rd.

Warmest days Wed - Thu. Next weekend GFS drier / ECM wetter for the Memorial Day holiday. Beyond there may tend back to onshore unsetteled to close the month and open next. We'll see if the signal wanes and ridging prevails.

(David Ludlum) 1883: The massive tornado outbreak on record in Illinois affected the northern and central parts of the state. At least 14 strong to violent tornadoes touched down killing 52 people. The largest death toll from a single tornado was 12, with 50 injuries, from an estimated F4 tornado which moved from near Jacksonville to 5 miles west of Petersburg. This tornado destroyed the town of Literberry. Another tornado, with an estimated F4 intensity, killed 11 people and injured 50 along its path from the south edge of Springfield northeast to near Kenney. This particular tornado reportedly drove 10 inches by 12-inch oak timbers 10 feet into the ground. Another estimated F4 tornado in far northern Illinois touched down near Capron and tracked for 17 miles before lifting in far southern Wisconsin. Lastly, an estimated F4 tornado tracked 20 miles through Kenosha and Racine Counties in Wisconsin. Eight people were killed, and 85 were injured. 1960 - Salt Lake City UT received an inch of snow. Unseasonably hot weather prevailed ahead of the cold front. Pomona NJ reported a record high of 93 degrees, and Altus, OK, hit 100 degrees. Shot at mid 80s to low 90s in the hot spots. Fri (5/24) into next weekend / Memorial Day weekend, looking near normal - slightly above - and mainly dry at this range GFS / and a bit wet on the euro Sat-sun. Will see. Beyond there overall near normal to close the month as it looks today.
