Winter temperatures have returned. Still a total glaciated pack but not more than 4 or 5". Since I have lots of family in the Baltimore/DC area I have been messaging all day with my friend Bob Turk who is the TV met down there. What a tough forecast. Very sharp north cutoff through the metro. No excitement here.
It's been a real sharp cutoff, I'd rather have it miss me by 100 miles than be on the fringe and get a half inch.

Just walked the dog and can feel this damp “winter” muck finally moving out. Chilly breeze was refreshing. About time…
Feels good, just brought a load of wood in and fired up the wood stove.

This holiday week wasn’t an outrageously snowy period for skiing around here in the Northern Greens, but it was actually quite nice in terms of temperatures and conditions. We had a number of days with temperatures in the upper 20s F to around freezing, and an inch or two of new snow here and there to add at least a bit of freshening. Overall it was far superior to holiday weeks where there’s been a huge melt out or wall-to-wall subzero temperatures that make skiing impractical.
There’s clearly enough natural snow for Bolton to have their Wilderness Uphill Route and associated terrain open for ski touring, so that was definitely a plus, and it looks like the area saw plenty of use from skiers. Lift-served terrain at the mountain is still somewhat limited as they continue with snowmaking, but they’ve got Hard Luck open for some steep skiing on top of the usual early season routes.
My wife and I were out for a snowshoe tour Monday on the backcountry network, I went ski touring in the Wilderness area on Wednesday, and then we skied lift service on Thursday, so I’ve added a few shots from the holiday week below.
Not a deep pack but looks wintery at least.

I've used my chicken water heater like 5x so far. I've had Decembers where the only time I turn it off is Christmas.
Compared to what you guys usually get it's not so great I'm just comparing it to our dud so far down here.

You have had a deep winter thus far. So has Phin and Slot and Lava and Jayhawks and C and N VT. South of that general line has blown dongs that curve to the left and to the right . We have had no winter . It’s been perpetual spring . Our angst is real
Compared to us they have, I haven't burned the wood stove the last couple of days it's been so mild. Looks cold tomorrow night into Monday so I'll fire it up tomorrow.

Winter Classic (NHL) looks fun. Air temps of -5F with wind chill of -20F (Minneapolis)
Wheeeeeee!!!!
I remember the first was in Canada, I think Edmonton and it was -20, the people that bought a beer turned to slush by the time they got back to their seat.

For whatever it’s worth at this juncture...they both looked great. Hope we can keep it looking good over the next week.
How was the snow up north?

Ah ... again, I wanna stress for those that really kinda sorta 'need to see these model runs deliver' ... best not to focus or 'look' rather for details at this range. I mean, 7 days - this is a favorable synoptic super structure evolving, that has the benefit of an Archembaultian system embedded - it's true that a storm is higher confidence. I would say 'favors' cold p-types, but that is by no means a declarative.
I guess my point is, your going to get ticked off waiting run to run for ticks. LOL
Isn't that what we do here for fun?

My nephew in Denver said they haven't had snow yet, just a coating one night.

I haven't had an electric bill in the past 3 months, except for the connection fee which ended up being less than $2 last month thanks to Isias. My panels/roof/gutters are set to be paid off in 9ish years if I choose to pay the minimum monthly payment. I snagged a 10 year loan for all three for 0.99% through a green energy credit union. I had almost 500 kwh banked as of last month, since the bank resets March 1st, I started running space heaters to warm up the bedrooms before the kids go to bed. Between my new wood stove and the sporadic space heater usage, plus warm winter so far I have used less than 1/8 of a tank of oil....
Im ready to pull the trigger, had a new roof put on this year so it's good to go, my wife is not so sure about doing it even after all the research I've given her but I think she'll relent soon.

We had our boy scout meetings at one of my friends house every week and his father would drive us all home in his VW bug, sometimes there were 6-7 of us kids crammed into that little car, always felt like it was going to bog down but it got us all home.

Here's a weird one, must have seen 10 Dead Squirrels on the way to work this morning. And many live ones. Taking advantage of the warm weather?
Funny you say that, I saw 3-4 dead ones in the road this morning.

That seems to be their deal, but they have a solid menu.
I usually go for the ribs, I think we ate at one in NH a couple years ago.

My father passed away a few hours ago. Thank you all for your kind words and support the last few weeks.
My condolences, thought he was going to pull through, lost both my parents in the last 5 years so I know how hard it is.

Ate at Red Parka Pub tonight. The quality at these places has declined a little. They are still good but it seems they can’t get good help in the kitchen and there are supply issues.
Steak joint, right?

I think it was January 1994 I got zero or below 7 nights in a row. I think that's the year Jerry and Ginxy refer to with Leon. I was in a rad spot back then and got to -20 two nights in that stretch.

Yup, they are great for that. I go for as long as I have confidence in it. One other note, rodents love their electrical wires just like Toyota's, not sure if they are coated or what. Just keep them away and you'll be good!
My sister puts those anti mice bags in her car because they apparently like her wires. Its a Jeep

Yep. They've been stalking and harassing individuals from the Upstate NY subforum...and then hide behind "you were using hate speech" when really the adult members in our subforum are quite capable of respectful discussion. Wxtrix likes to quote/copy and paste any non-weather related items from banter threads on there and cause drama. Then a couple of the mods support it and name call if you question things. Avoid that toxic cesspool where they intentionally pull people in to bully them...and then laugh when they push people to the limit of typing something that leads to a warning or being banned.
She's kind of an odd duck to be polite.
