  1. HRRR causing storm cancels. This f'ing place...
  2. Just joking (kind of)... I don't think we should expect kids to engage in remote learning on occasional snow days. Let kids enjoy the snow, FFS. They're kids! You could argue that we can ask kids to do so if there are extended periods of being out of school, but the county has inclement weather days baked in, so they're using them. And not only, that, but with COVID surging everywhere right after the holidays, using inclement weather as an excuse to keep kids out of school makes a difficult political decision a lot easier to sell. I'd have been fine if my third-grader were required to do remote learning today, but the school system chose not to do that. I understand that it makes things very difficult for some families who rely on the school system to essentially provide child care, but my family is lucky not to be n that situation, so I'm not horribly opposed to the decisions they've made at this point.
  3. That’s a pretty damn cold look. If we can score a little snow as that settles in, then even it stays dry, we could have a couple weeks of a really wintry feel.
  4. I'd be really happy with a few inches after yesterday. I didn't have a chance to get out and enjoy it much yesterday, so some cold powder on top of yesterday's snowfall on a cold Friday in early January would be awesome!
  5. Your trees are all dead. As Eric Clapton said: Let it snain!
  6. Haven't heard you poo-poo anything recently, so I'm surprised to hear this from you.
  7. I'll take the combination of pretty much all other guidance v. the Euro, though I do realize there are relatively minor differences in a fast flow that can cause relatively big discrepancies among them.
  8. Exactly how we see it. Makes political decisions much easier to make and "sell."
  9. GFS looks just a little flatter than previous runs.
  10. I don't know if you can put all the blame on VDOT. If you get high volume of traffic - including tractor trailers - trying to drive in 2"/hr rates, accidents will happen. That starts the chain of events that closes down the highway. How many resources are available to move multiple 18-wheelers off of entrance and exit ramps in 12" of hardpacked snow along a 50-mile stretch of highway? If you can't move them and get people off the road, then you can't plow.
  11. Still no plow in my neighborhood here in Burke. Likely that all available resources are being diverted to get 95 and other roads in the Fredericksburg area open, so I'm not complaining.
  12. I guess he figured that the snow had basically stopped up here and that it'd be fine. One look at Google maps would have divested him of that idea. He also could have been making a beer run and wanted to cover his tracks with this tweet.
  13. You have cars and trucks in the way - no way plows can get through. You also have abandoned cars and jackknifed tractor trailers all over the place that require a ton of support to move...especially with the roads covered in snow and ice. It's a huge ripple effect - as soon as a few big rigs go down and some entrances and exits get blocked by stuck cars and tucks, it's basically game over. I'm sure EJ can chime in on this, but I can only imagine that the amount of logistical support to get this going again in massive.
  14. I feel like every time something like this happens, my reaction is shock at the insanity of their obs...because it's ridiculous. Got to 18F her, which is basically the forecast, but I'm a little surprised it wasn't lower.
  15. I guess my parents are lucky they were able to find a passable exit off of 95S at about 4:30 pm yesterday. They checked into a hotel that doesn't have any power (thus no heat).
  16. Thanks! I’m partial to that one, as well. That deep black sky behind the lit-up house with black shutters that’s swallowed up by snow…it just feels right. Helps that my boy is watching me out the front door like “Dafuq you doin’ out there, dad?”
  17. With the RGEM showing that, I expect the GGEM to look really nice tonight.
  18. The RGEM is a crack-azz model. Give me some of that.
