  1. With the crazy QPF forecasted upstate..

    Maybe I'm overthinking this...

Though If I recall...  Hugo & Floyd had "Officials" per se kinda worried about "Dam Failures, (Especially on South Carolina side of the NC/SC line)..

Yes I'm including the Raleigh  Triangle in My thoughts..

There are some pretty Large Lakes & Reservoirs up there, (Earthen Dams capped with Concrete)..

With the CRAZY amount(s) of QPF forecasted, What is the consensus here of A VERY REAL possibility of one or more Large Dam Failures happening up there? Like Jordan Lake, Lake Wylee et al?

I imagine lotsa "friends" downstream would be curious..

I mean those "amounts" are just Biblical… !!!

Hugo Redux, Hugo Redux, Hugo redux! The amount of possible inland wind damage after this comes on shore, could be worse than Hugo! The flooding will be way worse than Hugo, because every model has it slowing down after it comes ashore. Hugo was 135 mph at landfall, Flo projected to be 140mph. I think the Hugo comparison is warranted, and we might be wishing it was “only” a Hugo, when all is said and done!

My call,, give Me crow with Well's BBQ Sauce..

Fran+Hugo+Floyd in a nice neat bow..

This map isn't entirely accurate as the strongest wind gusts were measured at Figure Eight Island at 122 mph.  That's what was actually measured.  The above map only has 90 mph there. Wilmington ASOS gusted to 86 mph.  Winds obviously gusted much higher on the New Hanover county beaches, but less than 90 mph according to that map? Ridiculous!

I recorded during Fran , on Sheep Island at 130 +/- before We had to "hunker down", and our instrument "crapped out"  Cords..

You are forgetting Bald Head Island, Southport,, State Ports, and of course, Frying Pan Tower.. take those readings into consideration before posting, A lot more Station(s) are Accurately reporting recently.. With "Weather Stations"..

Hello everyone and thanks for all the great posts! I wish we were tracking a nice snow event rather than this hurricane.

For those that have not experienced this, take it seriously. I was in the decaying eye wall of Fran in central NC and it was the most chaotic weather conditions I have ever experienced. Got a tree on my roof. Its not a place you want to be unless you are well prepared with good shelter, food and alternative power generation.

Wherever that eye wall goes as it disintegrates will be trouble.

    Good luck to everyone.

I resided on the beach @ landfall, took a trip to "sheep Island" during landfall, this one scares me..

  5. OT, local report.. Chit Show has begun here in Wilm..

Botted Water GONE reports of gas Stations already running out..

I "managed" to get Gas, (about 40 hours "run-time") 20 gallons just as the station ran out..

Station "jacked" the price  almost 25 cents while I was there "in-line".. I spent close to 80.00 in gas for My generator..

Then theres this report from the Carolina Beach Boat Ramp..

Meanwhile I'm watching a "parade" of boats leaving ILM..

""""Ok locals, I am hoping that most of us have common sense on here. My husband and I were taking our boat out of the water today, due to the impending storm, and I watch people arguing and fist-fighting at the boat ramp. Parking lot full of boaters, boaters 10 deep waiting in line to either put in or take out and tempers were high and fuming. A new boater backed down and then proceeded to wait on the boat to arrive. The new boater initiated the argument that continued for 30 good mins with several boaters. He was expecting everyone to move so his boat could come in. In the meantime, I counted 6 other boats docked and waiting for trailers to arrive so they could depart. Then my husband had pulled up and was about to back in when someone cut him off and zipped in. His boat was still coming in. I swear I just shook my head and said dear lord please get us out of the boat ramp safely without dying, because I know the storm you are sending will wash these fools away. Lesson, be kind and courteous and help out your fellow boater. Sheesh. CB police or whom ever the Public boat dock officials are need to monitor it over the next few days. People are nuts.""

I'll tell you, remember hurricane mathew a few years back? I was living in wilminton at the time, only a cat 1 (first hurricane I'd experienced), but when you see long leaf pines bending in ways they shouldnt over someones house, knowing they could snap at any moment will scare the bajeebus outta you. And the noise of it all I'll never forget... Then driving back through lumberton the amount of tree damage was surprising for how far in land they were. Straight line winds can maximize gust potential very quickly.

Then you don't remember the "Super storm of "93"? OMG that wasn't even a cane,, 80's F to snow with-in 10 miles! THAT was a Storm My friend!

I and DownEast,, Digress.. I'm sure He agree's I hope pulled he button on that genset.

I started mine.. got gas cans at the ready

How significant is the process of hooking things up to a generator? If you're ordering one off Amazon, is it a portable one?

And how much gas do you need to have on hand to last at least a week running a refrigerator, some lights, maybe a fan, and since they don't use much power these days, a TV?

I'm assuming I'm out of luck if I want to hook up a generator I got from Amazon to power a heat pump and air handler.

Edit: Sorry if this is too off-topic for this thread.

    I'll try too answer this..

I purchased, a B & S "storm responder" from Sears.. 5K~6K watts.. Runs 11 hours on 5 gallons of gas.. (depending on the Load Cycle).. It is enough, I "TESTED" Loading on my home.. I was enough to power My computer/freezer/fridge/TV/ AND My AC/Heat pump.. (Barely all @ once)..

I also had a Generac 6000 that could do same amount of "load" , but less hours run time..

    Hooking one up...

YOU CAN USE THE 120/240 "LINE OUTLET" TO Reverse plug per'se, into your DRYER outlet... making it a "inlet" into your home powering it.

DOING SO MAKE SURE YOU TRIP YOUR MAIN BREAKER TO THE GRID!!!!!!!  aS "YOUR POWER" will go to the nearest transformer turning your measly power into 7K +/- volts possibly causing death too line workers thinking those power lines were not "energized"...

My house is "wired" for a Gen-set already.. All I have to do is trip My breaker & I'm set.. Generator runs in the detached garage..

Of course FOLLOW SAFTEY GUIDELINES, in other words Carbon monoxide poisoning..

Smaller portable generators (1000K ~ 3000K watts) are enough to power your fridge/freezer and maybe light & TV/Radio.. Though the extension cord outlets, (don't forget to buy those, AND long enough to have the generator OUTSIDE.. )

Edit too add, (about the transfer Switch on breaker panel),, I just cut the Main breaker..

I carry about 20 gallons of fuel, because I'm right on the main grid..

Generators are great to have in winter, In case of Ice Storms also..

Be sure (If you buy one) buy your gas cans NOW, you'll have mucho trouble finding some..

Plus I got a Boat tank that hold 30 gallons if I've got to use that too..

Replying to SENC's quote below from other forum:

"Besides If We get "wacked" I know some pretty cool places to set up.. Sat on "Sheep Island" during Fran, THAT was a experience!"

Fran was my first major hurricane experience.  I rode it out only 500 yards from the Intracoastal waterway in Scott's Hill.  It was awesome and will always have a special place for me...despite the other majors I've experienced since or hope to document in the future.

That said, I'm very interested in hearing about your own incredible Fran encounter, as well! :)

Sheep Island is a "spoil Island" on the Lockwood Folly Inlet, about 200' in elevation.. Actually if you look at the google Maps, it kinda sets like Bald head just inside the inlet.. You need a john boat to get there from sunset Harbor, (where I lived)..

Waves like I've never seen in My life, watching the East end of Holden beach get DESTROYED.. My "sunglasses" were sand blasted.. seriously..

Waves & storm surge, indurating the West end of Oak island & the East of Holden was something to observe.. Like a massive flash flood all at once.. in minutes.

Honestly, I was young & dumb.. Beer & liquor & My buddies that ,WE took,, &  "took that bet" were betting We would become Darwin Award Nominees..

We were lucky we didn't loose  the boat, being Aluminum, We sunk the dern thing, carried the outboard uphill, so we could get back across the sound..

Winds We experienced were every bit Cat2/3 solid... Waves I observed looked like "white water" but were probably  in the 20~30 foot range.. EASY, (it look like Tsunamis continuously)..

A LOAD ROAR from the waves.. That Island was SHAKING! On top of that "JET Sound" from the Wind(s).. It got downright HAIRY  except from the beer/liquor & dope, I'm still surprised We survived the experience.. yea, We "huddled" and drink those last drops & PRAYED..

Honestly you don't want to experience something like that on a "Spoil Island", even in a "protected area" it really kinda sucks, I had sand everywhere.. even up inside places I never thought of..  ;)

  10. Oh Lordy Jesus... Is all i'm sayin.. But, Maybe fun.. they said.. Until it isn't,, after a week or two without power.. (and your gas runs out for your generator).

Wilmington, (like when Floyd happened) will become a ISLAND for a WEEK.. No way in or out..

With the explosive development We've had.. This will be a real test, to see if all that water goes "somewhere"..

Or the subsidence around the storm would bake us with bright blue skies and temps in the 90's. That's the way it was the day after fran hit.

yeppers, Brutal after Fran..., HOT, HOT, HOT... That was just after We got sliced by Bertha the month & 1/2 before..

We'll Gotta go check & do quick Maint. on My Generator.. (It's only has .04 hours on it, (brand new really).. Knowing the Cape Fears good luck, we'll get "whacked"..

Maybe I'll get good Picture Footage & Obs for you Inland peeps from here this year..

Yeppers!! Lets DIG MOR COAL! Were going to need it going into the Grand Solar Minimum..   Gotta keep warm & Toasty inside..  Do you know, it's been SNOWING in Japan in AUGEAT? AND FROST elsewhere? (Granted it was in the Northern Most Island) but EARLIEST recorded frost & snow since 1974?

OR that AT the same Latitude  Where Norway & those other Nordic Countries were "recording a Heat Wave, Parts of Russia at the Same Latitude was receiving SNOW? (Earliest recorded)? SEEMS our #FAKENEWS conveniently leaves little details like this out of the Doom & Gloom News reports..
