  1. more ground air pollution in 1993, 1999, 2010 and 2011? I think it's worse now with more people driving lol
  2. 1953 was also wild with 6 100+ days and 4 100+ days at NYC including two historic heatwaves as well as our longest heatwave in history that included the all time record high of 102 in September !!
  3. are you sure this isn't from traffic congestion? the 2020s really have not felt anywhere near as hot as 1993 or 1999 did or 2010 or 2011 for that matter. scientifically speaking it's much harder to get extended or extreme heat because of more water vapor in the air, so it really hasn't been as hot as it was in those years. By the way, I was looking at wunderground a lot this past Thursday and one of those micronets reported a high of 97.5 right near JFK..... maybe they are running hot as JM said that day?
  4. omg did you check out 1949 Walt? 1949 gives 1993 a run for its money..... incidentally, 1949 had 5 99+ days at NYC, while 1993 had 3 100+ days at NYC (including 3 in a row.) EWR had 8 100+ days in 1949 and 9 100+ days in 1993 as well as 5 100+ days in a row (and hit 105 their all time record high twice in that streak!!)
  5. Yes Walt, the 1990s were most definitely our hottest decade, more specifically, the period from 1991 to 2002. Many historically hot summers in there: 1991, 1993, 1995, 1999, 2002 !!
  6. But we don't have any official reporting sites in Brooklyn (and Brooklyn is in the SW part of Long Island geographically speaking so more like JFK than LGA) and the only part of Queens that hit 100 was near LGA lol.
  7. we almost stayed in the 50s yesterday Tony =\
  8. with a ridge that strong shouldn't it connect to the offshore ridge and provide a continental westerly flow?
  9. no 100 degree heat in Brooklyn or Manhattan either lol. Only in northern Queens which is influenced by high traffic density.
  10. Yes these highs have been much weaker in the last few years than they were in the 90s when they overpowered the ocean.
  11. climo plus historical analogs, it rarely ever happens that the hottest weather is in June, plus the very important fact that a quick change to hot weather in the latter third of June much more often than not portends to a very hot summer and the hottest weather coming in July.
  12. sounds a little like 1988 too. No 100 degree days in any of those years in NYC or JFK (dont know about LGA.)
  13. sounds a lot like June 1994 (although June 1994 heat was more widespread). Why did the heat abruptly end after June in 1994, Tony? I saw that Philly still had a very high number of 90 degree days that entire summer (although it didn't match 1993 which was historic everywhere), but why did the heat end early in NYC that year? I noticed that the records for today are from June 1994 (including a 101 at EWR?)
  14. I think LGA numbers are inflated because of dense road traffic in that area (I see it all the time with my car thermometer, leaving Manhattan and entering Queens via the mid town tunnel the temperature rises at least 5 degrees and falls back down again when I get onto the Grand Central.) I've always thought both highs and lows in that area are highly suspect. Maybe NYC is not properly sited either, in which case, an average of all 4 sites (EWR,NYC,LGA,JFK) should be used for both the highs and the lows. BTW this extreme traffic issue in northern Queens started after the 90s.
  15. 1991: The second largest volcanic eruption of the 20th Century began as Mt. Pinatubo injected 15 to 30 million tons of sulfur dioxide 100,000 feet into the atmosphere. 343 people were killed in the Philippines as a result of the eruptions, and 200,000 were left homeless. Material from the explosion would spread around the globe, leading to climate changes worldwide as the sun's energy was blocked out and global temperatures cooled by as much as one degree Fahrenheit. 1992 was globally one of the coldest since the 1970s. This was a real tragedy, when we learn to control volcanoes and earthquakes we won't have such tragedies anymore.
  16. This heat is just the appetizer, Walt. I expect it will dry out the soil and give all of us 95+ temperatures. I expect the real deal to happen in early July when we will all have multiple days over 100!
  17. Does this indicate big heat for July too? In my experience we don't hit 100 in June (it has never happened here before and in NYC it hasn't happened since 1966), but I predict if we get to at least 95 in June we will definitely have multiple days over 100 in July.
  18. last year *heat* didn't even register with me lol. It has to be hot everywhere otherwise it's not real heat.
  19. Maybe it's because the western basins are warming faster..... it's happening in the Atlantic too. There is a see saw effect, if one side warms faster the other side has to go in the opposite direction?
  20. Would 1980 be a good analog for what's about to happen? A rainy and cool first three weeks of June (record cool lows on Tony's daily records posts have been from 1980 lately) and an abrupt shift to hot and steamy from June 20th to September 20th. Although the epicenter of the big heat was St Louis that year, NYC had their hottest ever 62 day couplet (July-August) with both months averaging 80 or higher and August 1980 was our hottest August on record!
  21. Finally! It's about time!
  22. hopefully it's dry heat... how long is this supposed to last? if it's like July 2010, we had dew points in the 40s (45-48) when it was over 100.
  23. isn't that when the AMO changed from - to +? our tropics were very quiet before 1995
  24. Yes we are, all major models in agreement for 100 degree heat next week
  25. I cant wait for my 100 degree heat starting next week, enough of this rainy cold nonsense.
