  1. Don it appears that Mt Pocono can be extremely cold regardless of whether NYC experiences extreme cold. How did MPO do in 1985 and 1977 when NYC hit -2? Were those days not as extreme there? Thanks!
  2. Great we can track indices instead of storms
  3. I fully expect this month to end up at just under 29.5 degree average temp and UHI from my reading has about a 2.5 degree impact on our averages.
  4. it's definitely hard to walk in especially when it gets icy. It reminds me of my grade school days, I hated walking in the wind and cold and slip sliding around on my way to school in the morning. It was much better when we had 2 feet of snow and everything was closed, of course that didn't happen much....
  5. hopefully they only last a month or two like last time and we go right back to sunny and dry. We're in a much drier regime now than we were a few years ago.
  6. New York area also had multiple blizzards and it was so cold that the ink in Washington's pen froze. Based on his diaries there were at least a dozen blizzards in the tristate area. It makes one wonder why back then snowstorms affected much larger areas and now they only affect much smaller areas-- when the Deep South gets them we don't.
  7. Crime rates are also much lower in the winter than they are in the summer and snow (while it's still clean and not contaminated with chemicals) does make everything look prettier and cleaner.
  8. Yep, I think the last one was best plus the one in April.
  9. I had mine back in October 2023 when I was sick for 3 weeks. =\ My fever was up around 104 too.
  10. This is why we had so many years back in the 70s and 80s with below average snowfall, when we did have a favorable ridge out west, we still didn't get our snow.
  11. Next colder day was in January 1985, Don?
  12. Looks like the Hudson is freezing over already and ice breakers are being used there and ferry service is being canceled on the Hudson. Firefighters are having major problems fighting fires because fire hydrants are freezing up and water is turning to ice on contact.
  13. You could have RSV, a lot of stuff is going around this year. Cold and dry is the absolute worst weather for viral spread, virus particles hang around in the air for longer distances and are spread more quickly. Remember this general rule of thumb: cold + dry increases viral spread warm + humid increases bacterial spread
  14. Christmas eve of our coldest December in our lifetimes. It looks like the climate there has warmed too, -20 and colder readings there were more common in the past and must be like 0 and below for NYC-- MPO's coldest temperature on record is -35 from back in 1912. http://climate.met.psu.edu/data/city_information/lcds/mpo.php#:~:text=The lowest temperature ever recorded,in the form of snow. The lowest temperature ever recorded at Mt. Pocono was -35 degrees on January 14, 1912.
  15. wow, I thought it would have been colder than that in January 1994, Don! When was the last time it was -20 or colder there, Don, January 1985 or January 1977? Thanks!
  16. it's interesting that there's a major snow drought in Alaska
  17. and was that the coldest temperature that entire month, Don? That was our coldest month in a long long time....
  18. You missed some of our best years by just a few. A 30 inch blizzard in January 2016 and an incredible period from March 2018 to April 2018 when we had 5 snowstorms!
  19. it's worse, but not by a huge amount. I lived through that period, it was unbearable. Particularly because we did not have the 00s and 10s to look back on. Having experienced the 00s and 10s, I'm pretty sure I've experienced the best that winter has to offer. It's only going to be downhill from there (pun intended.) We've had the best of times already so I'm okay with whatever happens from now on.
  20. Don is the -15 at MPO the lowest temperature there in many years?
  21. It depends on your interest in snow. Some people never ski and just want to see snow fall. For these people snow is more important than cold weather. If you're a skiier than cold weather is more important than snow because the ski areas can always make their own snow.
  22. Mix in beet juice and less salt is needed and it makes the salt used more effective without the corrosive properties of salt.
  23. Beet juice. It makes salt work at a lower temperature and less salt is needed when beet juice is added. https://www.modot.org/tools-tackling-winter-weather#:~:text=The unassuming sugar beet makes, icy or snow-packed surfaces.&text=The sugar beet is of,well as feed for cattle. Beet juice has been proven to lessen the corrosive properties of the salt that we use to apply to the roads.
