Impressive cold in the northeast. Boston got to -10, which hadn't happened since 1957.

A noticeable amount of snow has melted from some grassy areas yesterday/today despite temps in the mid 30s w/low dews yesterday and temps barely getting into the teens today. The sun angle monster is starting to awaken.

Chinese balloon descending?
https://www.cnn.com/politics/live-news/suspected-chinese-balloon-us/index.html
Recent reports from aircraft in the area have it at a lower altitude than what was originally reported.
Latest sighting was around Columbia, MO. On current course, may get to the STL/downstate IL area later this afternoon if anyone from there is interested in looking.

Is there a better chance of seeing the balloon or getting a 6" snowstorm this winter?

We should have some chances in the back 1/2 or 2/3 of Feb. Need to cash in with a warning level event farther south, otherwise chances of challenging 2011-12-like futility will certainly go up. If you're looking for good news, it doesn't currently look torchy on the ensembles around mid month (especially with westward extent) and should be fairly active. We'll see how things trend as we get closer to the possible decent period. Can't sugarcoat things prior to that though.
It's bad when anybody in Arkansas is outsnowing parts of I-80... and it's not early season anymore.

Mine still has the tarp on it from the warm season lol
I used it on 12/22. Parts of the driveway only had a dusting of snow but it helped with the drifty areas.

I'd hone in on somewhere in that 15-28th period (And into March).
Obviously far out, but that's what the early signals are suggesting.
I'm down. Honestly would like another opportunity or two to use the snowblower that I just got last year. Only used it once so far.

We are sorry. Honestly, DM me if you are here long enough for a meet and greet.
I'll have to see. I know it's going to be at least 1 overnight, but not sure about 2.

As mentioned, Detroit tied for 6th warmest...but the snow ranked 60th snowiest out of 143 years.
The January mean temp was 33.5 at DTW. Here are snowfall amounts for the Januaries that had a mean temp of at least 33 degrees, in order from warmest January
1880: 0.5"
1932: 0.9"
2006: 5.0"
1933: 0.4"
1890: 1.6"
1906: 7.3"
1990: 4.0"
2023: 11.7"

A lot of areas got lucky in January with a top 10 warmest month still managing to produce monthly snowfall amounts anywhere from just a couple inches below average to a couple inches above average. Certainly wouldn't want to roll the dice on that over and over again.
One place that stands out is Dayton, OH. Finished +8.1 and had 2" above their average January snowfall. Pretty impressive. That's not Marquette, Michigan or some other far northern location where it's easier to get away with big warmth.

I have some exciting news for the posters and residents of Kokomo, Indiana. I'll be there for a wedding later this year.

Looking forward to our 72 hour cold snap in late March/early April when we get 4-6 inches of wet snow that only accumulates on the grass and then melts 3 hours later. Got 5 inches on Saturday and saw snow during the day for first time in a long time.
this winter suxs!!!!
At least you had that.

Will this be the February that doesn't produce, or will it be delayed but not denied?
-
I didn't even get below 0 last night. Of course my snowpack situation is even more pathetic than what ORD currently has.
-
CFS trended warmer on the recent run. Still a gradient look.
The fate of this month will come down to what happens in the final 2-3 weeks, because the first part is definitely kind of trainwrecky.

Here's a little bone for beavis.
GFS has 468 dm thicknesses getting into northern Maine in 3-4 days (actually has a pocket of 462 dm thicknesses in Canada!). Euro looks like it doesn't quite make it into Maine but it's very close.

You are in the Indiana suburbs of Chicago right? I did not realize it has been that bad. Whats your season to date? Going beavis is justified. In fact that's what it should be used for, not knit picking little things during snowier times.
Yep, south of Gary. I'm under 10"
At the end of the day it's just snow. I don't care that deeply, and it's been nice not having to drive in bad road conditions too much. But still, would be nice to at least get a good event or two.

As we close in on February, I'd have to say that this is about the most pathetic winter I've ever seen in this area up to this point. I've lived in a few different locations so let's just say the years I've been living around the I-80 corridor. Still have not had the grass fully covered yet. The December storm might have done it if there hadn't been so much blowing/drifting, but hard to say. Still haven't had a 3" snowfall. Not to go all beavis on ya but that is just ridiculous for this latitude.

This winter definitely feels more lame than last winter imby and that graphic backs it up.
-
Doing some quick calculating, this January looks to finish over 7 degrees above average at ORD and will probably be the 8th or 9th warmest on record. Would've been higher but these last couple days of the month are going to knock it down the list.

March 2001 storm. That was entertaining.
Was that was the one when he said he got the 500 mb pattern right? As if people are gonna care about that.

Winter 2022/23 Medium/Long Range Discussion

I'm gonna start thinking that we're heading toward a 2012 type situation if the US snowcover situation deteriorates in the next few weeks.
