I remember that one. NBC 10 was the only TV station to forecast snow. Everyone else had rain. We got 5" of paste in the hills of Manayunk and it was a wreck. Loved it.

Next week we are installing mesonet sites in western Maryland. This will provide additional ground truth in the data space landscape.

The NAM may beat the globals here in terms of thermodynamics because it's got better resolution. We got burned several times in Maryland when the GFS/EURO showed a clean and quick transition from rain to snow, but the NAM showed a persistent warm tongue that kept everything as a mixed bag and cut down on accumulations. The NAM was dead on in the end.

It's a legitimate fear. We've seen these jet extensions persist longer than initially forecast and it leads to can kicking once we get close to D10 l, like 2018-2019.

We just can't win. The Pacific jet extension is here to stay it looks like.

I'd pay real money for a 3" - 5" Christmas snow event that ushers us into a legit winter.

IIRC, GFS was upgraded to correct a bias in North America that cause the boundary layer to remain too cool.

GFS has indeed been schooling the GFS in the "no snow" department for years. Euro a shell of it's former self unfortunately.

Appreciate the insight. I'm not expecting 15 degrees and cold powder this winter, especially down in Maryland. Just need 30/28 and pillows.

Weeklies seem to keep the GOA low too close to the Canadian coast and flood them with Pacific Puke. Do you think this is a red flag for the rest of winter?

You'll probably end up with half an inch on the back side here. Sometimes that end of the PVA can juice some big flakes.
