I don't see any evidence of fresh salt chunks but all the roads look salty too me and I'm confused how lol.

I assume they put down more salt to account for the quick temperature drop and freeze up?

Ended up with 1.3" here.  Had some heavy downpours at times.  Got a burst around 3:30pm or so with crazy heavy rain for maybe 3 minutes.

I remember years asking on this forum (or probably a predecessor forum) what's the longest they've seen a plowed pile of snow last.  Someone within this forum's geographic area responded June - I want to say it wasn't plowed but rather snow that had been somehow packed in somewhere in the shade on the side of some mountain.  June!

That seems too much for our region.  I really don't even see how plowed piles could last beyond the end of April around here, unless it was exceptionally cool.  Otherwise, by May the 70's and higher dewpoints would eat any snow alive.

Who is upset? People are talking about the pattern to come, not the past month.

If you scroll the last few pages there is the typical doom and gloom that we just got lucky with the last event and more cutters to come!

People love winter so much, then enjoy what you have instead of what's on a model run 10 days away.

  4. People on here never cease to amaze.  Month to date I'm running about -7 on the lows and -9 on the highs.

Does it need to snow every 3 days or something?  It's been plenty cold and there's snow on the ground.  That's what you get in the metro in December, we're not in the northern Rockies.

This is due to the overall climate warming since the 1970s and not an expansion of UHI. Even cooler surrounding areas are wall to wall AC usage now from May to September when they weren’t in the past. The warming in rural, suburban, and urban areas has been proportional.

People will say it's my "heat tolerance," but out my way I seldom use the AC in May and September, outside of short stretches.  In recent years we've even gone well into June without it.  Before we got that heatwave this past June in fact it was quite cool.  The city is outrageous with how it retains heat.  Sometimes I see they are close to 90 at midnight whereas I'll be in the mid 70's.

The runoff is leading to higher salt content in the drinking water supply for areas around NYC and NJ.

The suburban reservoirs that supply 10% of New York City’s vaunted drinking water are getting saltier due to decades of road salt being spread near the system — and they will eventually have to be abandoned if nothing is done to reverse the trend, city officials warn.

    https://patch.com/new-jersey/bridgewater/salty-taste-nj-drinking-water-linked-use-salt-brine-roads

NEW JERSEY — Have you noticed a salty taste in your water recently? New Jersey American Water said it is due to the use of salt and brine for public safety during the recent extreme winter weather and ongoing drought conditions.

The water company shared a notice with customers about the change in taste on Friday.

Wow that's really scary honestly.  The question is, why does the runoff that goes into our storm sewers enter our drinking water supply?

Storm runoff is supposed to enter local streams/rivers/lakes, or so I thought.  Regardless, that water contains a lot of other chemicals as well, think about when a garbage truck leaks on your street, or a car is leaking fluids, then you get a heavy rain that rinses everything down the storm drains.

It is honestly obscene.  Was in a mall parking lot last night and i t was LOADED with rock salt.  Almost could not see pavement though it.

Crazy.  And as mentioned it destroys vehicles.

Liability, amplified after the cluster that the states and city had post-November 2018. It had been steadily getting worse, and their slow response to 2018 made them go HAM for everything thereafter.

Could be.  I don't fully remember how bad the impacts were, but it's silly and wasteful.

Summary message: I could not go back to review the OHP between 16z-20z/30 for the unfortunate fatalities related to only very short fuse prediction of 1" in 15 minutes over NYC... results as cellar fatalities, again, as in prior city FF.  That's the part that didnt work out in the thread.

    Otherwise see graphics below

    1) CPC D8 1"+ heavy rain forecast (MDT risk)

    2) CoCoRaHs region red and orange dot verification of the main axis of heavy rain (see legend)

    3) NYC subforum rainfall

    4) EPS 06z/31 5H... note negative tilt lobe to NJ

    5) EPS 18z/30 12 hr 170M HFC over NJ...  large 12 hr HFC's need to be contended with as event concerns...given adequate moisture.

You can use these graphics to go back to p1 of this thread to verify the Sunday 10/26 post.  Modeling was helpful for sure.  GEFS rainfall and max gusts were terrible as compared to the EPS and EPSAI modeling.

I'm near those red dots in northern Morris county.  3 inches+ around here.  Very heavy downpours at times.  Needed some rain, and we got it.

depends where you are and how you radiate at night...had a few AC nights here but not many since then

True, but we don't radiate extremely well here.  I guess I have a very good tolerance for warmth..

You're in the northwest suburbs. Here next to Manhattan that would be ludicrous with all the 70 degree uhi nights.

I can sleep easily on a 70 degree night, but I agree the UHI is way worse than out here.

Were you not in the mid to upper 80s the last few days?

Absolutely was.  But it's been perfectly comfortable.
