I am so glad I was only 10 years old and didn't know about why/how it happened...all I remember is the disappointment of waking up that morning to clear blue skies, and being upset about it (which proves snow weenieism is something you're born with, lol). But luckily I didn't know that folks just S (or was it north?) were getting hammered.

    It's hard to look at.

Yes it is representative of most people who live inside the beltway, though even there DCA seems to be on the lower end of the range.

But that’s very different from representing the entire DC/Baltimore metro area. Especially when even people east of the fall line say that it doesn’t reflect their winter climate.

Well I mean you shouldn't use it for that.  Would we use Central Park to describe the climate of someone living in Orange County NY or something?  No - it's the climate site for the city.  But since these sites tend to have the longest/most uninterrupted/verified climate record, they are the ones mot often cited.

DCA is not representative of this region and should not be used to generalize the winter climo of the whole area. It has good data but it’s a very warm spot at zero elevation on a river in the center of a heat island.

it's representative of the million people who live in DC/Arlington/Alexandria, with some minor variation.  It's not supposed to represent some way out suburb.  We had these same arguments in the NYC forum where folks in like way out NW NJ were pissed at Central Park's climate record/obs/whatever.  Well ok, it's the climate site for NYC not your random suburb.  Sorry.

If the Euro's right, we pop a +30F above normal day on Friday.  GFS keeps the boundary more to the south.  When was the last -30F below normal day at any time?  Quick glance...the pre-Xmas December 2022 cold shot didn't do it.  No days in February 2015 reached that (although almost).  January 1994 got a -35F departure at DCA.  Anything since then?

yeah I was thinking 94.  Maybe some day in 96?

I get that.  But one needs to step back and not assume that just because some indices or the Nino phase looks unfavorable for awhile starting next year, that it means NOTHING in any particular winter season and everything is shit the blinds awful.  I'm not going to sit here and expect it will be great by any means.  But let's worry about next winter...or the next 8!...as they come.  Sure, we may have a sucky or more hostile look next year, but what if we get a lucky time or two where we get a decent or better snow event?  It could happen.  Nothing precludes that.  That's how I'm looking at it for now.

Snow angels?  Now that's something I haven't done for years!!!  LOL!!!

exactly - we are still plenty north where you can have the right combo of cold air plus a juicy storm coming in - and we get blitzed.  I'm sure it will be that way for many years to come, it just won't happen as often.  It's just that snow is going to be less routine here - and it already wasn't that routine to begin with.

Last 7 years: Least snowiest years in our history. What one could reasonably expect in our city climo wasn't even met. I don't get why people don't understand that...this is the worst stretch in many of our lifetimes. I'm 33 and have never gone 7 years without getting at leasd one footer, or a period with two less than 2-inch winters in a three year span. This is not what I consider the "normal" inconsistent snowfall. That 7 year period has felt worse to me.

I mean we were already on the edge of the "reliable snow zone" - mean temps tick up a degree or two, and boom, suddenly we are south of it.  I get it - it sucks.  My kids won't get to experience the same storms that I did as a kid if we live here.  But if you are living in the Mid Atlantic and expecting a snowy climate - it's just not.  DCA's annual mean temp is 60F, BWI is close.  We are quite lucky to have places like Canaan etc that aren't too far away where their annual snowfall will probably keep ticking up - these are some of the snowiest places east of the Rockies.

I gotta disagree with you on this one.  The people who constantly complain on this forum are much worse than the people who object to it.

the complaining is ridiculous.  Unless folks live in the far western parts of our region (Davis, Canaan, Deep Creek, etc), expecting reliable snowfall from winter to winter isn't a thing around here.  The standard deviation of annual snowfall from most of our climate sites has to be off the charts.

This is the panic room. Save your endless complaining about the complainers for the model thread!

As for me, I am chasing a foot+ snowstorm somewhere into NY State this weekend. I have haven't left winter. Im just leaving this garbage climo area.

lmao you live in Newark Delaware - not sure what you're expecting.

DCA does not match in with other stations, not even close.  BWI IAD Camp Springs are consistent in their relationship with each other.  DCA uniquely 5-15+ on many occasions.  And Most Importantly, although it’s rare for the Potomac to be frozen it has happened and the discrepancy is still there.

lol it matches fine with urban areas especially in the District.  It's not supposed to have the same temperature as you.

The two personal weather stations right near, but across the river from DCA were 22 and 21 for lows.

Can I complain about IAD being ridiculously low when my low was 17?

yeah DCA actually compares better with the Navy Yard / Capitol Hill n'hoods in DC than it does with some of the ones on the VA side that are close-by.  When we lived downtown we were rarely more than a degree or two off from DCA.
