Yeah, you've been on this so I wasn't trying to argue some epic pattern...just pointing out to him that red anomalies aren't the kiss of death, especially for NNE, where mid Atlantic and especially NC, it's game over.  But yeah, when I see bare ground in Jay Vt. in January, it doesn't scream epic.  About as bad as it can get skiing wise right now.  I'm still optimistic that it being this active, the odds will play out up here.

I mean, this is my backyard on Jan 4 at 1500 feet in NNE. You don’t find that epic???

I don't generally talk about personal stuff on AmWx but I love and miss contributing to the ski forum.  In March 2021, I was at Berkshire East and my kid ran into me, getting off the quad and tore my ACL.  I knew at the time, something was ripped and assumed ACL.  I got the full mountain rescue sled ride down.

It took about a week to get an MRI and my ACL assessment was correct but I also had hairline fractured my femur and tibia.  Since I had already walked around on them for a week,  the orthopedist said there was nothing else to do but use crutches, start PT at that point and go talk to a sports surgeon.   The orthopedic surgeon basically talked me out of ACL replacement because of all the complications that nobody likes to discuss. That's a story for another post.

The long and short of it is that I have barely done anything on skis since March of 2021.  There is a brace I am getting fitted for that will allow me to ski but certainly not woods or moguls.  I am just looking forward to getting back out on the slopes with my kid at the end of the month or early February.  I would have been back out sooner but I decided I was not diligent enough with certain rehab exercises and wanted to get fitted for the right brace.

Anyway, that's my story and I am determined to get back on the slopes this year, even if I am just doing Green trails.

Sorry to hear. Both my kids have already had fractured bones from skiing, and Diane last year had her ACL issue… skiing definitely has its downsides. It’s a good thing we love it so much! Hope you get back to it soon, even if on easy trails. Being out there is half the enjoyment, no matter what trail you’re on!

Not going to say it hasn't "torched"  here...but it didn't turn out as bad as I thought. By all means, it was not good. I just thought the temps were going to be higher. I think we had 1 day in the 50s. Lots of 40s and 30s and even a dusting of snow overnight. The rain sucked, and overnight lows staying above freezing- I guess those were the two worst take-aways

Yeah we’ve certainly had meltdowns like this if not worse before. Usually those come alongside long periods of snowy weather- we haven’t had that much of that, but winter has a long way to go.

  4. Today is a perfect example of why people shouldn’t stress out too much about ski conditions in bad patterns - as long as the resort has good grooming. You’d think it’d be as bad as it gets with the weather we had and last nights freeze, but it’s actually very enjoyable. Fast, loose granular with good grip. It helps that there are no crowds.

Of course, good grooming is key. I went to Jiminy Peak last year when the weather was pretty decent and the conditions were atrocious. A ski patrol told me “this is New England - it’s how it’s supposed to be.” Yeah, not so much. Just gotta ski the right places!

Ha yeah I got out for a slow walk with the dog. Got extremely tired fast… but I just don’t stay in the house all day well, I need to be outside.  I’ve heard or have always thought even when sick to keep a little bit of movement and fresh air if possible.

It has that euphoric spring time feel.  Don’t know what it is but it just gets endorphins going.

Yes! Went out just for a couple of runs because my kids asked me to ski a bit with them after their ski team practice, and I couldn't stop! It just felt so good. Honestly, I wish we could get more days like this, interspersed with lots of snow. Wouldn't that me amazing?

My son has is first U10 race on Monday. His coach told me 2 days ago that apparently he's REALLY good and they asked me to get him actual race gear... damn it's an expensive sport. But he loves it and seeing him become so much better than me at age 8 is pretty amazing.

    Happy New Year everyone!

I made it 2+ years but got COVID this week.  I had two rough colds over the past year that weren't COVID, but this one has smoked me.  I cannot stop sweating, ha.  Just pouring sweat all the time like I'm running a marathon.  Fever builds then breaks, then builds and breaks.  Or my body is trying to flush my body and get rid of something.  For the past 3 mornings I've had to strip the bed and wash the sheets, just soaked in sweat and then chills.  My wife woke me up the other night thinking I was going to have a seizure or stroke, she said my face was just running sweat while I slept, like I was hiking the mountain on a humid July day.   Never seen anything like this.  I have no idea what's going on, just keep hydrating.

So sorry to hear that! Get better soon!

Locally in Coos County there are upper 30's near the river and low 50's at the drivable 2000 foot peaks. Definitely melt weather for natural mountain snow, almost feels like frost heaves on the road!

I just posted in the other thread - 33 here, 53 in Twin. It's wild!

The mid-slopes are going to absolutely torch tonight and stay mixed.  It’s still 40s at the summits, with the valleys now below the inversion tickling 30s (39F MVL I saw).

But that 1500-2500ft level that’s not valley will get the full brunt of the warmth tonight just above the surface inversion.

The auto road profile shows it perfectly

  9. Gotta admit, today felt awesome. Skiers looked stoked, even if the conditions are not perfect. Huge crowd.

Looking strictly at the GFS, looks like things start looking pretty decent about a week for now - so for the time being, seems like we should enjoy this spring stretch, the real thing is still a ways away!

Regarding that hiker, unlike the woman not long ago that was supposed to be experienced, this latest incident just reeks of really poor decision making right from the start. I'm sorry the man died, but beginning an 8mi winter hike at 0F at 11am, not returning until after dark lacks common sense.Maybe there are other details not released in the media, but this was piss poor judgement.

Eek didn't realized that. Haven't heard much detail about it.

For my birthday in Feb, I’m trying to plan a predominantly hiking focused trip to New England / NNE. My wife and I are experienced winter hikers though we haven’t done much in the northeast US and am hoping to get out there and see some beautiful sights.

I’m interested in locations around Mass, NH, or Vermont (Maine might be just a bit too far for our purposes right now) and I’m interesting in some recommendations for places to go focused on hiking. I gather this time of year the majority of mountain locales are geared toward skiing and snowboarding, which neither of us do anymore (used to Snowboard, unfortunately have had severe back injuries that took that from me). So I’m really unsure of what places would be ideal for hiking at this time of year.

I’m totally open to any recommendations of any kind, my only ask is nice and broad; general “outdoors” :D. We do prefer day hikes to camping and would also love any cool towns to visit to stay, eat, and drink. We’re very well prepared for the cold and have suitable gear / clothing.

    Greatly appreciate any suggestions!

There are a ton ton of amazing hikes here between Mt Washington and Franconia Notch, but please do be careful and really consider your experience level. Another hike died this week - second in a month. Winter hiking is serious business!
