  1. In rural areas where phone lines had not yet reached full penetration, party line service was offered as a subscription. These were lines that serviced anywhere from 5-20 households. Each subscriber had their own dedicated ring. At our house, one long ring followed by two short rings meant a call was coming for us. A neighbor would have a different ring sequence, so you didn’t answer those. Since it wasn’t a private line, if you picked up the phone you could listen to others’ conversations. Etiquette said that if you broke into the conversation to announce you had to make an urgent call, the other parties would wrap up their call.
  2. Absolutely I remember. Used to frustrate me that I wasn’t able to see it with our B&W TV. We were a typical family though. It wasn’t until 1972 when a majority of the TV sets sold in the US were Color TVs. My folks bought one a year later, a 15” floor model, for $300.00. It was a big deal for us.
  3. When I was young, before the cable came to our area, we could pick up one TV channel clearly: WJAC channel 6 from Johnstown, PA. It was an NBC affiliate. We also had a party line telephone. It rang all the time, but only some of those calls were for us. If you picked up the phone you could hear others’ conversations. If you needed to make a call, you could ask the others to relinquish the line. Sometimes they did. A lot of times they didn’t.
  4. Looks like a potentially significant flooding event for W Md and the high ground of eastern WV tomorrow. Couple inches of rain and temps in the 50's with all the liquid contained in that snowpack is gonna raise the rivers and creeks dramatically. Good day to chase waterfalls, but hopefully not a bad one for some of those valley towns. From the FFW:. ...Periods of moderate to heavy rain may fall on a deep primed snowpack leading to increasing melt. Flows in rivers may increase quickly and reach critical levels...
  5. Warm air staying away from here so far. 55 in Elkins, 50 in Front Royal, 45 in Winchester. 39 and foggy in my yard. Forecast high is 57.
  6. Picked up 0.2" of snow overnight on 0.24" of precip. Skies brightening now.
  7. My point forecast for Wednesday says “Mostly sunny with a chance of snow. Highs in the lower 50’s.”
  8. Light snow now. 34/31. Winds still up S 12 G20.
  9. Temperature just crashed here as the wind came up. Lost 6 degrees in about 30 minutes, down to 39. Wind is SW 18 G28 and rain has started.
  10. I haven't been able to access that site for years. Have tried several times to register, but never get the confirmation.
  11. Stormtracker has done well for himself. Are his snow measurements from the South Lawn ?
  12. Where I live is a desert for beer choices. If you aren’t after the 30 pack of Bud or Miller, you are going to have to search far and wide to hit on something worth investing in. But lately I have seen the Dogfish 60 min IPA showing up in various places, likely the result of an ambitious sales rep. I am doing my best to support his/her efforts, hoping at some point that they see the potential market for the 120.
  13. Hit 60 here today after a morning low of 23.
  14. My 6th grader returned to school yesterday with the plan to begin going 5 days a week for the first time this year. Today we got a message from the principal that he was potentially exposed to a COVID case at his school.
  15. Got down to 23 this morning. Snow pack is frozen so hard, I had to slice at the top of it with a metal ruler to be able to penetrate it to get a measurement. 3.5" depth.
  16. I was a 7-year old kid so I probably wouldn't be able to give a very scientific measurement. But I do remember piles of shells on the ground everywhere, not just under or around the trees. We tried tent camping in my cousin's backyard and gave up pretty quickly when it was apparent it would be impossible to sleep with the noise.
  17. We were overrun with cicadas in western MD in 1970. I've seen them twice since then and neither time has compared to that year.
  18. When I arrived home from work this afternoon the snow cover was still "shining" from the glaze on top. Wife just came inside from being out and said excitedly that she saw a patch of grass. Still 46 degrees at this hour with massive melting going on.
  19. Barometric pressure fell here in the past 48 hours from 30.62" on Sunday morning to 29.69" this morning. Winds should start ripping this afternoon when it recovers.
  20. Did some after-dark hiking on nearby trails through the woods. I was only sinking into the snow a couple of inches with each step. Been a long time since I could walk "on top" of a snow pack like that. It's composed of five snowfalls and some glazes along with numerous freezes. Really cool conditions. Sad to see it melt.
  21. I've been wondering how many members of the forum were north of me. I knew about @Chris78, @Bubbler86, and @paxpatriot. Looks like @HighStakes edges me out by a tick. And @BrendaM, @blizzardmeiser and @Albedoman are also further north, but well east. Interested to see where the rest of the northern Frederick/Carroll/Baltimore Co peeps fall.
  22. DEC - 8.7" JAN - 8.0" FEB - 16.5” TOT- 33.2”
  23. Up to 2.2" this morning. 23.5" since 1/31 which is almost an entire winter's average (26.5") in the past 3 weeks. Snow depth back to 7"
