  1. Most of Nassau County schools have called off tomorrow for an additional snow day. I wonder if Hochul has given a waiver for tomorrow as well… let’s see what happens in NYC. .
  2. NYC no longer gives traditional snow days because of the NYS 180 day requirement. Snow days are no longer built into our calendar. We cannot dip below 180 days or we lose a percentage of State funding that we rely on. Suburban schools are fed with school taxes so they do not care if funding is lost… that’s why they make their own calendars and rules. It sucks for us to have remote instruction because it’s a lot of work in the upper grades. However, it’s much safer than to have to use our own days or brave the conditions. .
  3. Unfortunately, it will be a synchronized remote day where instruction will be in real time via video… it’s still safer. .
  4. It’s mostly because of school buses and the risks associated with some of our most at risk students. It’s definitely less about teacher commutes. Plus a situation like this is a scheduling nightmare with low attendance rates and little learning happening. .
  5. I’ve been teaching for 23 years and I’ll probably hear from your wife before my actual school. It’s usually a foot plus for a “snow day” but seeing as how those no longer exist maybe we have a shot at remote. NYC already send out hazardous travel alerts. .
  6. I just got it the second time in 3 months… and I’m the sickest I’ve ever been with it. This is like super Covid (unfortunately I’m on round 4). Feel better soon. .
  7. NYC technically doesn’t have a set criteria for closing. We close mainly over 12 inches, or when the city deems it too dangerous. But with snow and ice it has a lot to do with yellow busing. If buses cannot run they will now shift to remote. .
  8. Schools also close because they rely on state funding which is often determined by attendance. If they suspect that attendance will be extremely low, they will take a funding hit for the day/days. If they close for inclement weather (which is built into their calendar) they get full funding. NYC no longer builds snow days into the calendar. All closures now revert to remote instruction, where we are accountable for attention. .
