1. 2-3 feet?!  I’ve got 8-18” but measured at High Road.  I’ve got 13-14 as the actual number.
Stowe often comes in lowest during big events and I truly believe it’s because its measured (I truly think these events are self-fulfilling prophecies) and it’s not a “we were looking for a couple feet, it snowed a bunch and blew around, must be two feet” type of logic.
We’ll test the hypothesis again if the High Road measuring results in lower reported storm totals during hyped events… hypothesis is without a unified measurement, some ski areas find what they are looking for, if that makes sense.

You don’t think a ski resort in vt pulls 24 first to last flake? I don’t think jay is the winner, but someone is going to get it good. I’ll try and do frequent measurements so we can compare jay vs. Stowe for this one. I do agree with your sentiment that if 24 is forecast and 19 skis like 25 we’ll just call it two feet.

TK is at 30 fyi..he’s been really good this year, but def skews higher

I am aware of the issues.  I know they didn't just close it for no reason.  But waiting until 2 days before to announce this was inexcusable and frankly I find it odd some are defending them at all.  How do you defend not telling people so they can make plans.  Selling spring tickets without telling people.  They also originally were doing absolutely NOTHING to compensate for the loss of HG.  They have since relented and announced they will keep the gate house side open as long as possible.  This is "something" at least.  It does not excuse them for keeping this a secret all winter though when people could have made plans or informed decisions.  Also, some of their excuses are weak imo because they are based on decisions they made earlier in the winter.  Yea now its too late for them to do anything about the staffing issue but that was a decision they made months ago.  I am slightly less upset now that they at least are leaving gate house open.  That is something...but it's not supposed to be my job as the customer to understand the problems.  It's supposed to be their responsibility to not let their problems affect me negatively.  In my opinion they did not try hard enough to do that in this case.  Actually originally their plan was to do absolutely NOTHING, just close HG and offer absolutely nothing and hope I understand.  That is not acceptable.  And even now, we shouldn't have had to force them to open gate house by complaining, and their lack of communication... sorry nothing anyone says makes me ok with what they did.  They are taking us for granted and I don't let people treat me that way!  I can give my money to other places they don't take my patronage for granted.

We have very different views on skiing.  I find it relaxing, exhilarating and an escape from the rat race of work, kids, and running a business.  It is my escape and happy place whether by myself or with my family.  I can still have a blast lapping 300 feet of vertical with my kids as I watch upper mountain lifts sit idle due to winds. It sucks, but I can't change it.  So it's not so much defending them, as it is listening to their explanation, accepting that I can't change it, and looking toward the positive that there is about to be 2-3 feet of Snow coming and some of the best April conditions in several years.  You are looking for an angry mob, which is fine; but it doesn't make my view wrong.

3. Even in mid-winter the appetite would be fairly small but in early April after a terrible winter, nobody will stay and track a storm that doesn’t give good snow within 50-75 miles. We are basically one more 00z run bump north from 80-90% of the forum checking out…myself included.

Na I get it..if it’s not historic or you’re not looking for a few more deep powder days to scratch the itch til next season, it’s nothing more than a stat padder that’s melted 6 hours after it falls. I’m just hoping for a memorable weekend to finish the powder days for the year.

4. There’s a decent NNE contingency, I feel like it’s stronger than it has been in past years with a couple of the new posters too.  But post count has dropped quite a lot since those Dec 1992 runs.

I think we’re in a good spot..maybe not Jp, but should be some really good late week turns. 18” would make for a really good first weekend of April. I just have to time the drive Tuesday.

5. I am just in awe of the whole 500mb evolution. But while the 500 evolution is a beauty, how the surface evolves is going to be a giant PITA to figure out I think. With how things continue to look though I would not be surprised to see the highest totals in the 3 foot range and this would be achieved in favored upslope areas along the Greens and Berks.

So you’re saying a certain ski resort in the northern greens 5 miles from the Canadian border looks like a powder fest late week? Preach on, sir!

6. bwt3650 do you work for SG?  Otherwise I don’t understand why you would have this attitude. Yes they have reasons. Yes finding  way to compensate with a plan b (keeping Ellen open, starting the project later) would have cost them money and been difficult, but that’s their responsibility to their customers. It’s not my job as the customer to care about their logistical problems in providing me with the promised service.  That’s their problem. Instead they made a bunch of excuses why they are basically choosing not to do anything and make their logistical issues my problem by offering less service than is acceptable and was implied when they sold their season passes.

You shouldn’t have to explain why they are screwong us over.   It’s their job to wind a way NOT to screw is over. They had options. Instead they made excuses why they didn’t choose those. Yes it wolf have cost them money.  That’s their problem. They chose their bottom line over providing the expected experience to their loyal customers. For that we should hurt them the only way that matters. They won’t ever get my money again!

I am urging anyone else who agrees the way they handled this was unacceptable to do the same. don’t give your money to someone that treats you like this!  On Facebook it seems most agree with me. Hopefully this will end up hurting them enough that it serves as a lesson the next time a resort wants to do something stupid like this!

Dude, I don’t work for sugarbush nor any ski resort. I’m just a guy who loves skiing and is trying to present a different perspective. Again, your dollar, your vote, but I think they presented several reasons why they chose to do this project when they did. They don’t have to explain, but they did…which is great. Could they have communicated sooner and better; sure. But I don’t think it’s some corporate greed scheme out to get you. They are still operating in April, which is a loss for any ski resort. Ellen always closes this time of year and ski resorts use tons of J-1 visa students to staff and if they aren’t there anymore, they can’t just go hire 30 people for 2 weeks. Ski resorts are complicated places to run with more moving parts, environmental issues, permitting issues, staff issues, weather issues than most other businesses. Sugarbush is spending money to replace a 40 year old lift and to improve the skier experience, with the cost to the skier being a loss of a few trails for what usually is about 2 weeks in April before conditions get iffy anyway. Im ok with sacrificing a few trails in April for that..you’re not.

I wouldn’t put as much stock into “angry Facebook” as you. Facebook is a cesspool for people to bitch. I’d be shocked if most of those “never going to sugarbush again” Facebook comments aren’t back next year. It’s the same people who light up social media about wind holds, but have no clue what the winds are like at 3500’ not how to operate a ski lift in the northern greens. I’ll still ski sugarbush and you won’t. We have different views on this..and that’s ok. One perspective is not better than the other.

7. Im sure the plans for that lift replacement have been a few years in the making. There’s permitting issues, labor, and probably just fitting into the lift duopoly’s schedule. It’s April and they had no way of knowing there would be a monster storm coming. They are upgrading their infrastructure to improve the skier experience. Lifts are extremely expensive and the fact that they have determined that the lift was past its life and opened their pockets before it started having major issues is a good thing; not a bad thing. I’m told there is a waiting list for some lift replacements by doppylmeyer. And April/may is more killington and jays game. It’s your money so I applaud you for voting your displeasure with your wallet and the communication probably sucked, but I have a different take on it.

And here’s the answer…they really didn’t have to explain all this, but wow, nice write up!

8. vtski and why are they replacing a triple that works fine when they have major infrastructure issues on Ellen?  I never experience the number of lift issues anywhere else that I do at sugarbush. But it’s not the HG lift. Plus can Lincoln peak even withstand the increased traffic from a quad?  There aren’t many runs off the summit. There is so much about this that seems off.  It the unforgivable part is the lack of communication.

9. Do they still do the June 1st thing?  I went and did that in college as a one-time bucket list.  Slept in my buddies Isuzu trooper, which was a poor night sleep, but a great truck.

Yep..that’s usually their goal. Last year they really had to piece it together, but made it.

It looks like there’s a bunch of different ways next week turns into a powder fest. Going to be a nice base heading into April. Superstar was as high as I’ve ever seen it Monday with the piles well above the lift in a bunch of places.

11. They had 6-8” at midday yesterday supposedly and then another 6-8” for a total of 12-18”… though that math doesn’t check out.  This is why I hate ranges too, because there was very little change in snowfall, if any, with elevation.  If you always employ the formula of “base area + 2” for every update, it starts compounding real fast.  Theres a joke in ski areas about the rule of + 2 (plus two) that most places just take what they measure and add two for an upper range (for whatever reason, it’s hard to say).  So my guess is Jay had 10 to 12.
The March Madness continues today with another 6-8" since we last recorded at noon yesterday. Since this storm began Friday night, we're totaling 12-18" of fresh powder and it's all out there to enjoy in the sunshine today.

Na, you’re right. I didn’t read the report; just went by the numbers at the bottom, which don’t add up to the report either. I’m in nj this weekend, so didn’t measure anything…48 in the last week probably isn’t too far off though.

30 minute lines just to get into the resort today, which jay never has…and to be basically saying “parking full, don’t come here” is crazy.

Debating Stratton, Kmart or sugarbush tnrw.

12. We had 11”, not 20”.
Wait there’s no way Jay reported 18” is there?  They had 6-8” like early afternoon yesterday.
I’m sorry there just wasn’t much if any elevational difference in this storm.  Synoptic and mid-level lift.  Zero reason for wide ranges in ski areas reported snowfall.  The bases got about the same as the summits.

Jay says 6-8 in the last 24 hours. 48 in the last week. They were saying 38 before this storm, so I’m assuming 10 total for the storm. It snowed Thursday night too, so maybe that’s in there.
