8.6 inches as of 8:00 am and light snow starting to pick up in intensity. 29.8° let the snow blowing begin and congrats to all the 12+ in NWNJ and SENY a little north of me.

28.6° in moderate snow. 7.5 inches and I never got into the meat of the deathband and it was still impressive. What a show for those that were in the middle of it.- 3,610 replies

January 6-7, 2024 Winter Storm Obs Thread
CPcantmeasuresnow replied to WxWatcher007's topic in New England
Anyone in Western CT be prepared to be wowed. That band over SE NY just west of the Hudson produced 9 inches in two hours in several locations in NWNJ and Orange County NY. I'm 30 miles due west of Danbury and missed out on the meat of it, but still got 7.2 inches in four hours. Still coming down heavy, double digits well within reach. Places already over a foot that were in the direct path. -
I don't want to jinx it now, but it looks like you're finally going to put an end to your single storm double digit January snow drought.
-
Would have loved to have seen that in the daytime. Didn't quite get into the best of that band but enough to be wowed by it. 7.2 inches otg as of 11:30 28.9 ° and still coming down heavy. Looks like I should stay in this at least another hour. Double digits definitely within reach.

Holy sh!t. Wow

It took until 8:00 to start to cranking but since then it's ripping. 29.0° and heavy snow. 5.0 inches on the ground as of 10:30.

Was expecting 8-10 here by every short and medium d range model and I think right now 5 might be difficult.- 3,610 replies

That explains why snywx who I believe is only a couple of miles from you seems to do bette snow wise. I believe he's at 850 feet. It can make a noticeable difference as we all know.
-
What is your elevation there?
-
At this stage (5 miles west of the river, 600ft asl) anything less than 6 will be a disappointment, expectations are for 8-10, anything over 10 is gravy.

Pretty sure most of Orange County should be in that, no need to go all the way up to Ellenville.- 3,610 replies

To close to the river. In the HV you usually want to be west of the river at least 5 miles for the optimal snows, elevation will matter in this event more than usual.- 3,610 replies

The record is kind of a joke anyway since LGA and JFK both have had 1.0 in that time frame, and so has the Park, they just haven't recorded it, the 0.9 the perfect example. I'm sure whoever is not doing their job measuring today and tomorrow at the Park will insure the record stays intact. It's a 150+ year track record of ineptness that they wear proudly.- 3,610 replies

I think we'll do fine up here. SNE coast will be a shit shoe and Boston will probably mix. Why do people always congratulate Boston three days before a storm? This happened all last winter and they barely ended up with 10 inches of snow. Last winter sucked but we (Orange County) at least broke 24 inches for the winter.- 3,610 replies

And to anyone that has followed this storm with realistic expectations that should be a shock to no one. Unfortunately many people like to believe they will be in the jackpot no matter what the guidance tells them. Clown maps are the biggest purveyor of this thinking.- 3,610 replies

I read the main thread less and less other than Walt's write ups and the moderator post. I get a lot more pertinent information for our area reading the New England Forum posts than most NYC metro posts.
