Remembering the Easter weekend ice storm of 1978 (Central Illinois)

Recommended Posts

The Springfield (IL) State Journal-Register had an excellent online feature as central Illinois approaches the 37th anniversary of the "Great Ice Storm" of Easter weekend 1978 (Mar. 24-26).

Among the damage due to the ice in central Illinois were two TV transmitting antennas, one belonging to the then-dark WJJY-14 (Jacksonville, IL) near Bluffs, IL (Scott County), and the transmitter of WAND-17 Decatur (then ABC, now NBC) near Argenta, IL outside of Decatur.  Great writeup from one of our market's meteorogists (Doug Quick at WICD-15 Champaign) about the ice storm and its effects on WAND on his central Illinois TV history page:

Any other accounts, articles, and studies out there about other parts of the Midwest were affected by the Easter weekend 1978 winter storm?  Most of the ones I've seen concern the ice here in central Illinois--I would think much of this subforum would have been affected by the "Great Ice Storm."
