IND has had 7 days in a row with a sub 80º maximum temperature. The last time that occurred in July was on July 26-31, 1971. Since 1943, when the airport became the official site for Indianapolis, the longest streak in July was 6 days on July 26-31, 1971. The forecast for the last 3 days of July is for temps to max out in the 70's...so this current one could be the longest streak since 1943.

July 24-30, 2013: 7 days (77, 79, 79, 78, 73, 78, 74)

July 26-31, 1971: 6 days* (78, 76, 75, 77, 75, 75)

 July 4-8, 1979: 5 days (75, 76, 76, 79, 77)

July 10-14, 1975: 5 days (78, 74, 76, 67, 78)

July 19-23, 1947: 5 days (73, 75, 73, 72, 77)

July 17-20, 2009: 4 days (75, 71, 75, 79)

July 24-27, 2004: 4 days (75, 67, 68, 73)

July 19-22, 2000: 4 days (75, 77, 79, 78)

July 12-15, 1990: 4 days (67, 64, 78, 75)

July 4-7, 1972: 4 days (73, 71, 73, 77)

July 4-7, 1960: 4 days (73, 77, 76, 77)

July 13-16, 1960: 4 days (76, 75, 77, 78)

July 19-22, 1958: 4 days (77, 66, 75, 79)

July 16-19, 1956: 4 days (79, 76, 78, 77)

*lasted 7 days, including a 79º on August 1, 1971

July 2013, so far, has had 11 days with maximum temperatures not reaching 80º. Since the airport era began (1943), July 2009 has the most with 14 days.

July 2009: 14 days

July 2013: 11 days

Projecting an average maximum temperature of 82.6º for July 2013, which would be good for the 20th coolest in recorded history for Indianapolis (1871 to present).

1) 79.0º in 2009

2) 81.0º in 1909

3) 81.1º in 1882

4) 81.4º in 1947

5) 81.6º in 2004

5) 81.6º in 1960

7) 81.7º in 1915

8) 81.8º in 1992

8) 81.8º in 1956

10) 82.0º in 1958

10) 82.0º in 1905

12) 82.2º in 1971

13) 82.3º in 1924

14) 82.4º in 2000

14) 82.4º in 1884

16) 82.5º in 1979

16) 82.5º in 1918

16) 82.5º in 1904

16) 82.5º in 1875

20) 82.6º in 2013 (projected)

And on the other side of things, the top 10 (11) July warmest.

1) 95.6º in 2012

2) 93.7º in 1936

3) 92.7º in 1901

4) 92.1º in 1934

5) 91.7º in 2011

5) 91.7º in 1887

7) 90.9º in 1983

7) 90.9º in 1916

9) 90.7º in 1966

9) 90.7º in 1921

11) 90.5º in 1988

The longterm median maximum temperature in July is 85.3º.

And for fun, the projected avg max temp of 82.6º for this July would be 1.4º cooler than the July 2012 average temp of 84.0º.

IND might want to check their math (it's 7 days right now, not 8 days).  :P

Record Consecutive days of below 80 degrees

The last day to reach 80 degrees in Indianapolis occurred on July 23rd. Since then, the high temperature at Indianapolis has failed to reach 80 degrees each day. Here is a list of High temperatures at Indianapolis since July 20th. So far, we have experienced 8 days in a row where the high temperature has failed to reach 80 degrees.

High Temperature at Indianapolis

July 20 83

July 21 83

July 22 83

July 23 91

July 24 77

July 25 79

July 26 79

July 27 78

July 28 73

July 29 78

July 30 74

The last time the high temperature at Indianapolis failed to reach 80 degrees for 8 days in a row was in 1871. This occurred from July 16th to July 23rd that year.

There has never been a string of 9 days in a row on record where the temperature failed to reach 80 degrees in July at Indianapolis. However, 9 days of below 80 degree temperatures will occur later today if the high temperature fails to reach 80 degrees. The current forecasted high temperature for today is in the upper 70s. Thus, we have a pretty good chance of seeing an event, that has not occurred in the last 142 years.

It's sort of weird that we average more than BMG and IND.

It's sort of weird that we average more than BMG and IND.

I don't think that's accurate. I assume the chunk of missing data in the 1981-2010 data set is skewing the average higher than it actually is...and not accounting for any quality of observations as well.
